Effect of preoperative colonic drainage for obstructing colorectal cancer.

Obstructing colorectal cancer (OCRC) is believed to indicate poorer long-term survival. The purpose of this study was to compare retrospectively perioperative safety and long-term results in patients undergoing surgery for OCRC following preoperative colonic decompression with that in those undergoing elective surgery alone for nonobstructing colorectal cancer (CRC). A total of 656 consecutive CRC patients undergoing colectomy between 2001 and 2011 at our institute were eligible for inclusion in the study.

In order to investigate the physiological role of these enzymes, we constructed the disrupted mutants of napA, narG, and narK (encoding the catalytic subunits of Nap and Nar, as well as the nitrate transporter, respectively).

Complete response to uracil-tegafur alone in advanced rectal cancer.

We report a case of a complete response to treatment with uracil-tegafur (UFT) alone in advanced rectal cancer. The patient was an 84-year-old woman referred to our hospital complaining of anal bleeding. A colonoscopy revealed a Borrmann type II tumor in the rectum, which was diagnosed as an adenocarcinoma.

Genome Sequence of the Deep-Sea Denitrifier Pseudomonas sp. Strain MT-1, Isolated from the Mariana Trench.

Pseudomonas sp. strain MT-1 was the first deep-sea denitrifier isolated and characterized from mud recovered from a depth of 11,000 m in the Mariana Trench. We report here the genome sequence of this bacterium, which contributes to our understanding of denitrification and bioenergetics in the deep sea.

Radiochemotherapy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in elderly patients.

Background/aims: The goal of this retrospective study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of curative radiochemotherapy (CRT) in elderly patients with esophageal squamous cell cancer (SCC).

Methodology: Between 1986 and 2011, 38 consecutive patients aged over 75 years with esophageal SCC were initially treated with a CRT regimen comprising radiation therapy at a dose of 60 Gy and two cycles of chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil/cisplatin.

Results: Fourteen patients were aged over 80 and 24 under 79 years.

Phase II Study of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy With S-1 and CDDP in Patients With Lymph Node Metastatic Stage II or III Gastric Cancer.

Objectives: We conducted a phase II trial to investigate the efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) comprising S-1 and cisplatin (CDDP) followed by extensive resection in the management of resectable locally advanced gastric cancer with lymph node (LN) metastases.

Methods: Patients with LN metastases from stage II or III gastric cancer received S-1 and CDDP, as NAC criteria for LN metastases were the involvement of ≥4 nodes <2 cm or ≥1 nodes ≥2 cm as confirmed by a total body computed tomography scan. All patients underwent extensive resection including D2 gastrectomy.

BtrC2 of the butirosin producer Bacillus circulans is a non-catalytic subunit of 2-deoxy-scyllo-inosose (DOI) synthase that is involved in butirosin biosynthesis, and also a homolog of glutamine amidotransferase subunit (PdxT) of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) synthase of Bacillus subtilis. BtrC2 has been found to have functions in B. circulans both in primary and secondary metabolism.

The facultative piezophile Shewanella violacea DSS12 is known to have respiratory components that alter under the influence of hydrostatic pressure during growth, suggesting that its respiratory system is adapted to high pressure. We analyzed the expression of the genes encoding terminal oxidases and some respiratory components of DSS12 under various growth conditions. The expression of some of the genes during growth was regulated by both the O2 concentration and hydrostatic pressure.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs), which recognize a wide range of microbial pathogens and pathogen-related products, play important roles in innate immunology. Macrophages have a variety of TLRs, and pathogen binding to TLR resulted in the activation of macrophages. R-848, an immune response modifier, is an analog of imidazoquinoline derivative and binds to an endosome-localized TLR to exert an anti-viral response on leukocytes.

A modified S-ROM stem in primary total hip arthroplasty for developmental dysplasia of the hip.

This study examined the clinical outcome of 220 hips in 196 Asian patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) for treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) using a modified S-ROM modular (S-ROM-A) stem designed for Asians, after 2-5 years (mean, 3.3 years) of follow-up. The stem was placed so that the anteversion angle of the neck was decreased against the sleeve in 56% of the hips and increased in 18% of the hips.

Pharmacokinetics of docetaxel in gastric cancer patients with malignant ascites.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether intravenous (i.v.) administration allowed docetaxel to penetrate ascites in gastric cancer patients with peritoneal dissemination.

D2 gastrectomy with versus without bursectomy for gastric cancer.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the survival benefit of bursectomy by retrospectively comparing the prognosis in patients undergoing D2 lymphadenectomy and gastrectomy (D2 gastrectomy) with bursectomy for gastric cancer with that in patients undergoing D2 gastrectomy alone.

Methods: A total of 254 consecutive stage IA to IIIC gastric cancer patients undergoing curative intent surgery between 2004 and 2009 were enrolled. The patients were divided into 2 groups: a bursectomy group, which included patients undergoing curative D2 gastrectomy with bursectomy by one surgeon, and a nonbursectomy group, which included those undergoing curative D2 gastrectomy alone by other surgeons.

In this study, we investigated the respiratory system of another well-studied piezophile, Photobacterium profundum SS9.

Inulin stimulates phagocytosis of PMA-treated THP-1 macrophages by involvement of PI3-kinases and MAP kinases.

Inulin is a polysaccharide that enhances various immune responses, mainly to T and B cells, natural killer cells, and macrophages in vivo and in vitro. Previous reports describe that inulin activates macrophages indirectly by affecting the alternative complement pathway. In this study, we examined the direct effect of inulin on PMA-treated THP-1 macrophages.

Thermal stability of cytochrome c₅ of pressure-sensitive Shewanella livingstonensis.

Cytochrome c₅ of pressure-sensitive Shewanella livingstonensis (SL cytc₅) exhibits lower thermal stability than a highly homologous counterpart of pressure-tolerant Shewanella violacea. This stability difference is due to an enthalpic effect that can be attributed to the amino acid residue at position 50 (Leu or Lys). These cytc₅ proteins are appropriate materials for understanding the protein stability mechanism.

Complete response to chemoradiotherapy in a patient with synchronous double gastric and esophageal cancer.

Unlabelled: A 77-year-old man with early synchronous double primary gastric and esophageal cancer showed complete response (CR) to chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with fluorouracil (5-FU) and cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (CDDP) and 60 Gy total dose of radiation. Gastrointestinal endoscopy had revealed type IIc squamous cell carcinoma in the lower oesophagus and type IIc adenocarcinoma in the mid-stomach region. Synchronous double primary early-stage esophageal and gastric cancer was diagnosed.

Dual primary gastric and colorectal cancer: is the prognosis better for synchronous or metachronous?

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognosis and clinicopathologic features of synchronous and metachronous dual primary gastric and colorectal cancer (DPGCC).

Methods: We reviewed clinical data of 96 patients with DPGCC, comprising 63 men and 33 women, from among 4523 patients with gastric or colorectal cancer who underwent surgical treatment or chemotherapy, but no endoscopic resection, for colorectal cancer between 1990 and 2009. The selected patients were classified into 2 groups according to the time of gastric or colorectal cancer detection as follows: synchronous group (n= 42) and metachronous group (n = 54).

A case of complete response to S-1 plus CDDP in early-stage mucosal esophageal cancer.

We report a case of early-stage mucosal esophageal cancer, showing a complete response to S-1 and cis-diamminedichloplatinum (CDDP). The patient was a 67-year-old man with synchronous double primary early-stage mucosal esophageal and advanced gastric cancer. We planned neoadjuvant chemotherapy with S-1 and CDDP for the advanced gastric cancer and endoscopic mucosal resection for the early-stage esophageal cancer.

The 17-propanamide derivatives of diastereomeric Δ(14)-17α- and 17β-estradiols, the potential candidates of a 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17β-HSD) inhibitor, were synthesized in 11 steps from estrone. The principal reactions employed involved in (1) conversion of estrone to the corresponding Δ(14)-estrone, (2) Grignard reaction of Δ(14)-estrone with allylmagnesium bromide followed by regioselective hydroboration of the resulting stereoisomeric 17ξ-allyl-Δ(14)-17ξ-ols with 9-borabicyclo[3.3.

Major biliary bile acids of the medaka (Oryzias latipes): 25R- and 25S-epimers of 3alpha,7alpha,12alpha-trihydroxy-5beta-cholestanoic acid.

The biliary bile salts of the medaka, the Japanese rice fish (Oryzias latipes) were isolated and identified. Only bile acids were present, and all were N-acylamidated with taurine. Three bile acids, constituting 98% of total bile acids, were isolated by chromatography and their structure inferred from their properties compared to those of synthetic standards when analyzed by liquid chromatographytandem mass spectrometry.

Roles of a 20 kDa protein associated with a carbocycle-forming enzyme involved in aminoglycoside biosynthesis in primary and secondary metabolism.

2-Deoxy-scyllo-inosose (DOI) synthase participates in the biosynthesis of 2-deoxystreptamine (DOS)-containing aminoglycoside antibiotics. The enzyme is expected to be of industrial use, because it converts a sustainable resource (glucose 6-phosphate) into carbocycle (DOI), which easily aromatizes to yield catechol. In the present study, we clarified the physiological role of a non-catalytic 20 kDa protein, BtrC2, associated with DOI synthase from the butirosin-producer Bacillus circulans.
