Purpose: To describe the anatomic and visual outcomes of eyes undergoing autologous iris transplantation for macular hole retinal detachment.

Methods: Seven consecutive patients with macular hole retinal detachment were enrolled in a single-arm prospective study. All patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy with autologous iris transplantation placed in the subretinal space as a plug to close the macular hole; in one case, a posterior retinal break was also closed with the same technique.

A fatty meal may represent a challenge of in vivo acute inflammatory reaction. We evaluated the acute effects of a standardised fatty meal administration on leukocytes and platelets and on their interactions on 61 subjects at different degree of cardiovascular risk, without any clinical event. Activated platelets may adhere to leukocytes and form circulating mixed aggregates. The latter are considered a reliable marker of a prothrombotic state and are associated with several cardiovascular conditions. The molecular mechanisms responsible of this cellular interaction include a central role of platelet P-selectin and of P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1), its counter receptor on leukocytes in a signaling cascade, resulting in the activation of the beta-2 integrin Mac-1 and in the firm adhesion between the two cell types.

Purpose: To determine the reproducibility and accuracy of ultrasonographic (US) measurements of distances between the corneoscleral limbus and the insertion site of the medial (MR) or lateral rectus (LR) muscle compared with intraoperative measurements in patients with strabismus.

Methods: One eye in each of 17 patients with postoperative secondary strabismus caused by over- or undercorrected eso- and exotropia and one eye of each of 19 patients with previously untreated strabismus underwent five repeated measurements by high-resolution ultrasonography of the distance from the corneoscleral limbus to the muscle insertion and three actual intraoperative measurements. We report a peculiar case of congenitally restricted sursumduction caused by an anomalous band-like structure within the right orbit which was completely distinct from the extraocular muscles. Imaging (static and dynamic ultrasound studies of the orbit and globe, CT and MRI) revealed the origin of the anomalous structure in Zinn's ring, its intraconal course and bulbar insertion. The ultrasound characteristics were similar to those of the extraocular muscles and optic nerve, and contractile activity appeared to occur during eye movements.

Aims/background: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a central nervous disorder characterised by abnormally increased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure leading to optic nerve compression. An indirect estimate of increased CSF pressure can be obtained by the ultrasonographic determination of optic nerve sheaths diameters.
