Introduction Lung cancer is the leading cause of oncological deaths worldwide. Various combined inflammatory indexes, such as the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have shown associations with pretreatment survival prognosis in patients suffering of lung cancer with or without brain metastases. This study aimed to compare the average values of NLR, PLR, LMR, and SII in healthy patients, patients with lung cancer without any other metastases, and patients with lung cancer and brain metastases.

The metabolism of glucose and lipids plays a crucial role in the normal homeostasis of the body. Although glucose is the main energy substrate, in its absence, lipid metabolism becomes the primary source of energy. The main means of fatty acid oxidation (FAO) takes place in the mitochondrial matrix through β-oxidation.

Background: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive brain tumor affecting adult patients, with an extremely reduced overall survival despite rapid diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, it is crucial to establish accurate and affordable markers that allow an individualized approach to GBM patients. Serum biomarkers could be the most accessible, as complete blood counts should be performed on all GBM patients before undergoing any surgical and/or pharmacological treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • * Results indicated that patients receiving hemoadsorption had better organ function scores, lower lactate levels, and fewer bleeding complications, along with lower early mortality rates compared to those receiving standard VA−ECMO treatment.
  • * The findings suggest that integrating hemoadsorption with VA−ECMO may enhance recovery and reduce complications for patients with refractory cardiogenic shock, although some results, like 90-day survival, were not statistically significant.

Brain metastases represent more than 50% of all cerebral tumors encountered in clinical practice. Recently, there has been increased interest in the study of extracellular vesicles, and the knowledge about exosomes is constantly expanding. Exosomes are drivers for organotropic metastatic spread, playing important roles in the brain metastatic process by increasing the permeability of the blood-brain barrier and preparing the premetastatic niche.

Autologous fat transfer is widely used by plastic surgeons for aesthetic and reconstructive purpose, but it has a great disadvantage because of its high variability rate of resorption. Numerous studies have examined the use of different agents to increase the viability of fat grafts. The results were discouraging because the use of a single angiogenic factor to stimulate fat graft angiogenesis may be inappropriate.

The Celtic culture of Western Europe left magnificent gold objects, such as jewellery and weapons from nobility graves and hoarded coins, as well as field evidence of pre-Roman gold mining and metallurgical workshops that attest to the mining of local ores. This is the case of Central France where many precious metallic ores have been mined throughout the ages from the Prehistoric times onwards. One of the lingering problems in assessing the provenance of gold artefacts and coins is the lack of relevant data on the isotope geochemistry and mineralogy of ore sources.

Education and training of morphology for medical students, and professionals specializing in pediatric cardiology and surgery has traditionally been based on hands-on encounter with congenitally malformed cardiac specimens. Large international archives are no longer widely available due to stricter data protection rules, a reduced number of autopsies, attrition rate of existing specimens, and most importantly due to a higher survival rate of patients. Our Cardiac Archive houses about 400 cardiac specimens with congenital heart disease.

Lead (Pb) isotopes provide valuable insights into the origin of Pb within a sample, typically allowing for reliable fingerprinting of their source. This is useful for a variety of applications, from tracing sources of pollution-related Pb, to the origins of Pb in archaeological artefacts. However, current approaches investigate source proportions via graphical means, or simple mixing models.

Since ancient times, physicians of antiquity noted the occurrence of priapism in some spinal cord injuries. Although priests saw it as a consequence of curses and witchcraft, after clinical observations of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the first medical hypotheses emerged in the 17th-19th centuries completed and argued by neuroscience and neurology developed in the European laboratories and hospitals. This study aims to present a short overview of the history of clinical observations of posttraumatic male priapism after spinal cord injuries since antiquity until the beginning of the 20th century.

Wishing to contribute to an easier remembrance of the name, shape, location and function of some neuroanatomical structures, this paper aims to identify the origin of eight Latin terms (pulvinar, capsula, infundibulum, operculum, flocculus, forceps, falx, habenula). Therefore, we analyzed the etymology of these Latin neuroanatomical terms in brief, and searched the possible correlations between the shape of different household objects used in Roman Antiquity and the shape of neuroanatomical structures bearing those names. We also perused the literature to identify the first anatomist who made such an analogy when searching to give a name to the anatomical structure he had discovered at dissection, as well as the time context of his discovery.
