The nursing care of hospitalized patients with dementia is planned and supervised by registered nurses. This care is delivered using a team approach, including certified nursing assistants, who may lack the knowledge and skills to properly provide care and manage the challenging behaviors associated with dementia. This article describes an innovative, multimodal education program designed to help certified nursing assistants acquire this knowledge and skill.

Continuing nursing education (CNE) programs are designed to contribute to nurses' professional development and to keep current on the latest knowledge and advances in health care. The American Nurses Credentialing Center has begun to focus on the evaluation of outcomes from CNE. This has required changes in the way CNE providers evaluate their program offerings.

A collaborative process that included geriatric assessments and audits was utilized to develop geriatric nursing competencies that were evidence based, relevant to the specific needs of the older adults cared for at a facility, and inclusive of appropriate resources for any staff nurse caring for an older adult anywhere in the hospital. This method of competency development could be utilized in the development of other population-specific nursing competencies.
