A junior doctor led near-peer acute ENT/head and neck surgery workshop for medical students.

Background: Near-peer teaching (NPT) involves teaching by peers who are at a close, but not the same, level of training. This study investigated whether a novel surgical NPT workshop, designed and delivered by junior doctors using simulation models for acute otolaryngology conditions, improved the knowledge and confidence level of senior medical students.

Methods: A one-day NPT workshop was held for medical students in their third year of a four-year postgraduate medical degree at the University of Notre Dame, Sydney, Australia.

Reduced number of admissions with acute appendicitis but not severe acute appendicitis at two Sydney hospitals during the first COVID-19 lockdown period.

Background: This study investigated whether there was a change in acute appendicitis, appendicectomy admissions or disease severity during the 2020 lockdown period in NSW.

Methods: A retrospective before-and-after study was undertaken of patients admitted to two Sydney hospitals (St. Vincent's and Liverpool Hospitals) who had appendicectomy for presumed acute appendicitis and patients who had confirmed appendicitis but did not undergo surgery.

Recurrent Hyperparathyroidism Following Successful Four-Gland Parathyroidectomy and Normalization of Parathyroid Hormone in a Renal Transplant Patient.

Chronic kidney disease has an estimated prevalence of 10% in Australia and is predicted to rise in the coming years. Secondary hyperparathyroidism resulting from chronic kidney disease is an important cause of morbidity in these patients; and screening for secondary hyperparathyroidism is recommended in international guidelines. We present the case of a chronic kidney disease patient who developed recurrent hyperparathyroidism despite previous "total" parathyroidectomy and subsequent renal transplant.

How much does axillary ultrasound contribute in women undergoing breast-conserving surgery with no palpable axillary nodes?

Background: The primary objective was evaluation of axillary ultrasound (AxUS) in preoperative staging of patients with invasive carcinoma undergoing breast-conserving surgery.

Methods: This is a retrospective, observational cohort study of patients with clinically node-negative (cN0) biopsy-proven invasive breast carcinoma undergoing breast-conserving surgery between January 2011 and December 2014 who underwent AxUS with fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy of sonographically abnormal lymph nodes. Patient records were reviewed.

Effect of Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy on Fasting Gastrointestinal, Pancreatic, and Adipose-Derived Hormones and on Non-Esterified Fatty Acids.

Background: Alterations in gastrointestinal, pancreatic, and adipose hormone levels may have a greater role in weight loss than initially appreciated. The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) operation is now the most frequently performed bariatric operation in many countries, but there are relatively few data regarding its molecular effects. We sought to characterize the effect of LSG on fasting plasma levels of selected hormones and on non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), and to compare these to levels in non-obese control individuals.

Double helix flap to close a massive circular soft-tissue defect.

The closure of a circular defect resulting from excision of large soft-tissue tumours may pose a considerable surgical challenge. We have described a successful result from the use of modified double helix rotation flaps following resection of a fungating 15-cm interscapular basal cell carcinoma. Our technique necessitated a single operation only.
