Introduction: The relationship between preoperative peak oxygen uptake/weight (VO2/W) and postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC) in lobectomies, including video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, remains unclear. Traditional pulmonary function tests are often unreliable in this group, necessitating alternative predictive methods. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the predictive value of preoperative peak VO2/W for PPC and explore factors related to PPC in lung cancer patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Chemotherapy has been developed for many years for malignancies, including advanced pancreatic cancer, downsizing the primary site, thereby enabling complete cure with the combination of conversion surgery. Pathological complete remission from operation samples was usually identified as a promising indication for a good prognosis for many carcinomas. Several case reports consisting of pathological complete remission after chemotherapy application have been reported but no case of pathological complete remission that resulted from successful extensive resection by surgery after S-1, irinotecan, and oxaliplatin (SIROX) chemotherapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Sarcopenia and undernutrition impact clinical outcomes in hemodialysis patients, but their combined effects were not well studied before this research.
  • The study analyzed 450 hemodialysis outpatients and found that 15.3% had both sarcopenia and undernutrition, correlating with a significantly lower survival rate and increased mortality risk.
  • While the combined presence of sarcopenia and undernutrition increased the risk of death, it did not show a significant link to cardiovascular events, highlighting the need for targeted interventions in this population.

Objectives: Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) has been applied to clinical diagnosis. Although AI has already been developed for gastrointestinal (GI) tract endoscopy, few studies have applied AI to endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) images. In this study, we used a computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) system with deep learning analysis of EUS images (EUS-CAD) and assessed its ability to differentiate GI stromal tumors (GISTs) from other mesenchymal tumors and their risk classification performance.

In Japan, the traditional method for measuring plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) was radioimmunoassay (RIA), which had several challenges, including poor traceability of certified reference materials and reduced detection sensitivity at low concentrations. To overcome these issues, a chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CLEIA) for PAC measurement was introduced in April 2021 and the Japan Endocrine Society published new guidelines for primary aldosteronism (PA). This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the transition from RIA to CLEIA for PAC measurement on PA diagnosis.
