Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of contrast-enhanced endoscopic sonography for discrimination of mural nodules from mucous clots in intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas.
Methods: Contrast-enhanced endoscopic sonography was performed in 17 consecutive patients who had an intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm with mural lesions. To perform contrast-enhanced endoscopic sonography, we used a second-generation sonographic contrast agent.
Aim: Elderly and/or cirrhotic patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) are at high risk of adverse effects during interferon therapy. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy, safety and predictive factors for sustained virological response (SVR) of low-dose pegylated interferon-α-2a (PEG IFN-α-2a) monotherapy in elderly and/or cirrhotic patients with HCV genotype-2 or genotype-1 low level infection.
Methods: Sixty-four elderly (≥65 years) and/or cirrhotic patients with HCV genotype-2 or genotype-1 low level (<5 logIU/mL) infection underwent low-dose PEG IFN-α-2a (90 μg/week) monotherapy for 24 weeks.
Congenital hypothyroidism (CH), one of the most common congenital endocrine disorders, causes irreversible intellectual disability in untreated patients. Today, the vast majority of patients receive early diagnosis and treatment in the context of newborn screening for CH, and achieve satisfactory cognitive development. However, a subset of patients with delayed onset are undetectable by newborn screening, and miss benefit from early intervention.

The unique branched terminus constituting partially modified sialic acids and N-acetylgalactosamine was successfully established by stereoselective double-sialylation using 8-O-methyl-N-Troc-sialic acid as a donor. The final 4 + 1 coupling reaction provided a high yield of pentasaccharide, which was deprotected to deliver the target molecule.

Dysfunction is developed from subclinical autoimmune thyroiditis through immune rebound mechanism and divided into 5 types. Most frequent one is destructive thyrotoxicosis, named as postpartum thyroiditis, which occur in early postpartum period and usually followed by transient hypothyroidism.

Since both leucine and valine are branched-chain amino acids, it has not been proved conclusively whether L266V mutation is actually responsible for the development of Dent's disease. In the present study using molecular analysis, we investigated the mechanism for loss of function of the ClC-5 protein resulting from the L266V mutation.

Methods: Twenty-one neonates who underwent selective head cooling between 2004 and 2010 and were followed neurologically for ≥ 24 months were investigated retrospectively. Patients were divided according to the neurological outcome at 2 years of age into group A (n = 11), patients with normal neurological function, and group B (n = 10), patients with neurological disabilities (n = 9) or those who died (n = 1).
Purpose: This is a report of a case of choroidal excavation accompanied by polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and retinal pigment epithelium detachment (PED).
Methods: A 57-year-old Japanese woman who had begun complaining of metamorphopsia in her left eye 7 months earlier underwent spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), fluorescein angiography (FA), and indocyanine green angiography (IA), as well as a routine ophthalmological examination.
Results: The patient's intraocular pressure, visual acuity, and visual field were within normal range.
Aim: Although frequent vomiting reflexes during esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) causes suffering in patients, very few studies have investigated the characteristics of subjects who frequently develop vomiting reflexes. This study examined the incidence of the vomiting reflex and related factors, especially upper gastrointestinal symptoms, among individuals undergoing transoral EGD.
Methods: Subjects included 488 consecutive adults (mean age, 56.
We surveyed the incidence of blood pump diaphragm damage (rupture or crack) in the NIPRO-ventricular assist device (VAD). In the cases in which rupture or suspected blood pump crack was detected, we disassembled the pumps to visually check the condition of the diaphragm after replacement or use. Of 366 blood pumps surveyed, diaphragm damage was observed in 2.

Human colonic myofibroblasts were isolated from normal human colonic tissue. The mRNA and protein expression for human CCL2 and CXCL10 were analyzed by real-time PCR and ELISA, respectively.

Methods: A total of 96 children and adolescents with orthostatic dysregulation were studied.
Background/aim: We analyzed the fecal microbiota profiles of pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
Method: Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis was performed in 10 fecal samples from Crohn's disease (CD), 14 samples from ulcerative colitis (UC) and 27 samples from healthy individuals. The bacterial diversity was evaluated by the Shannon diversity index.
Mixed-lineage leukemia (MLL)-AFF1 (MLL-AF4)-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is associated with poor prognosis, even after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). The resistance to graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effects may be responsible for the poor effect of allo-HSCT on MLL-AFF1-positive ALL. Cytotoxic effector mechanisms mediated by tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) was reported to contribute to the GVL effect.

As internal pulsatile blood flow on Doppler was present, the diagnosis of an aneurysm was made. The pseudoaneurysm of the left gastric artery was embolized with histoacryl and lipiodol and the splenic artery was embolized with coils at the location of the pseudoaneurysm to prevent hemorrhage.

She showed an akinetic-rigid syndrome and cerebellar motor ataxia. Brain MRI showed increased signal intensity at the bilateral pons, midbrain, putamen, and thalamus.

Using Lewis and Buffalo rat strains treated with peroral administration of N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), we evaluated the effect of rebamipide on the induction of tumor-suppressive dendritic cells, which are known to be heterogeneous antigen-presenting cells of bone marrow origin and are critical for the initiation of primary T-cell responses.

Aneurysms of the subclavian artery are rare in patients with Marfan syndrome. Resection of the aneurysm and interposition with a synthetic graft were performed through a supra- and infraclavicular incision, without resecting the clavicle.

We herein report a female child with choroid plexus carcinoma treated with standard dose of imatinib at disease recurrence. This patient failed initial twice-surgical resections, central nervous system (CNS) irradiation, and adjuvant chemotherapies and high-dose thiotepa and melphalan with auto peripheral blood stem cell rescue. Finally, imatinib treatment was undergone as a palliative setting, however the tumor did not reduce and the patient died of tumor bleedings.
