Cells utilize ubiquitin as a posttranslational protein modifier to convey various signals such as proteasomal degradation. The dysfunction of ubiquitylation or following proteasomal degradation can give rise to the accumulation and aggregation of improperly ubiquitylated proteins, which is known to be a general causation of many neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, the characterization of substrate peptide sequences of E3 ligases is crucial in biological and pharmaceutical sciences.

In nematodes, androdioecy, a sexual polymorphism composed of males and hermaphrodites having the ability to self-fertilize, has evolved independently multiple times. We report a case of a second free jejunal transfer to treat metastasis in the mesenteric lymph node of the first jejunal flap. A 73-year-old man underwent total pharyngolaryngectomy, bilateral neck dissection, and free jejunal transfer for recurrent hypopharyngeal cancer [left pyriform sinus, pT2N0, moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)] after radiotherapy. Seven years post-surgery, he underwent transoral videolaryngoscopic surgery for oropharyngeal cancer (soft palate, pT1N0, well-differentiated SCC).

Methods: A total of 43 patients with SMG cancer were retrospectively analyzed. Forty-one patients underwent ND: Levels I-V in 19 patients, Levels I-III in 18 patients, and Level Ib in 4 patients.

First, to determine the directionality of the interference patterns, we performed differential pulse coding modulation (DPCM), segmenting interference patterns into blocks and scanning the pixels in eight directions for each block.

Eruption of a venous malformation through an iliac bone harvesting site after trauma.

We herein describe a case of trauma-related wound infection with a subcutaneous abscess caused by both Enterobacter cancerogenus and Aeromonas hydrophila. An 89-year-old Japanese man was admitted to our hospital because of an injury that he had suffered in a car accident. The right dorsal region of the foot around the wound was reddish and swelling.

As most genes are shared between females and males, DNA methylation is assumed to play a crucial role in sex-biased gene expression. DNA methylation exclusively occurs at CpG dinucleotides, and therefore, we would expect that CpG density around transcription start sites (TSSs) relate to sex-biased gene expression. Here we investigated the relationship between CpG densities around TSSs and the ratio of gene expression levels between sexes in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), which displays remarkable sexual dimorphisms.

Start and initial results of the Fukushima Prefecture acute myocardial infarction registration survey.

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains one of the most serious heart diseases and elucidation of its pathogenesis and advances in treatment strategies have been desired. In 2009, to understand the status of AMI in Fukushima Prefecture for improving treatment outcomes, a new AMI registration survey system was conducted throughout the prefecture. A total of 1,556 cases were registered in the initial 2 years from 2009 to 2010.

We herein report the case of a 61-year-old woman with dilated phase of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (D-HCM) who had been diagnosed with HCM 17 years previously. On admission, her left ventricle (LV) had marked dilation, dyssynchrony with diffuse severe hypokinesis, and ventricular tachycardia. She had two mutations in the cardiac myosin binding protein-C gene, which were suspected to be the causes of the D-HCM.

Background: Superficial surgical site infection (SSI) can be caused by bacterial invasion during surgery. We investigated whether bacteria are found at the wound margin during surgery and whether a wound protector (WP; Alexis® Wound Retractor; Applied Medical, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) contributes to preventing invasion of the incision margin.

Methods: We studied 272 patients who underwent gastrointestinal surgery (115 gastric, 157 colorectal, including emergency operations) between October 2005 and July 2007.

Hyperphosphatemia adversely affects the prognosis of patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). We synthesized a titanium oxide-like compound (TAP) as a phosphate adsorbent for treatment of hyperphosphatemia in CFR patients. We evaluated the ability of TAP to adsorb inorganic phosphate in vitro and in vivo.

A case of pathological complete response of advanced rectal cancer to preoperative chemoradiotherapy using S-1.

In patients with advanced rectal cancer, preoperative chemoradiotherapy is superior to postoperative chemoradiotherapy because of causing less toxicity and achieving higher rates of sphincter preservation and curative resection. We treated a patient who had advanced rectal cancer with preoperative chemotherapy using S-1 and concurrent radiotherapy. S-1 was orally administered at a dose of 100 mg/day during the first cycle (two-week on and one week off).

Although acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is the most serious coronary disease, the background of its onset and the mortality are not fully understood, especially in Japan. From June 1999 to May 2005, we mailed an annual questionnaire to eighteen hospitals in which emergency cardiac catheterization and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were available in the Fukushima area of Japan. A total of 1,590 patients were included.

Hemorrhage due to tracheoarterial fistula with severe motor and intellectual disability.

Background: Tracheoarterial fistula (TAF) is an unusual but highly lethal complication of tracheostomy, and successful surgical intervention for TAF has been reported. Few investigations are available for TAF in severe motor and intellectual disability (SMID). The aim of the present paper was to analyzed TAF in SMID to clarify which clinical variables might predict the occurrence of TAF, and adequate management for lifesaving.

Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion increases vascular endothelial growth factor and cancer growth in rats.

Background: In liver surgery, the hepatic pedicle often is clamped to reduce blood loss, and later unclamped, representing hepatic ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) with induction of hypoxia. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression reportedly is induced by hypoxia; further, some cancer cells express the VEGF receptor (flt-1, flk-1/KDR). We hypothesized that I/R-induced VEGF expression could enhance growth of microscopic tumor via VEGF receptors on tumor cells, thus promoting liver metastasis in a rat model.
