The optical properties of metals arise both from optical excitation of interband transitions and their collective electronic, or plasmon, response. Here, we examine the optical properties of Cu, whose strong interband transitions dominate its optical response in the visible region of the spectrum, in a nanoshell geometry. This nanostructure permits the geometrical tuning of the nanoparticle plasmon energy relative to the onset of interband transitions in the metal.

We report a facile and controllable method for the postfabrication texturing of the surface topography of Au nanoshells based on site-selective chemical etching of the polycrystalline Au nanoshell surface by a bifunctional alkanethiol molecule, cysteamine. This nanoscale surface texturing process systematically introduces dramatic changes to the plasmonic properties of the Au nanoshells. The modification of the plasmon resonant properties of nanoshells as a function of increased surface roughness was examined experimentally and modeled theoretically using three-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations.

Metal nanoshells are a new class of nanoparticles with highly tunable optical properties. Metal nanoshells consist of a dielectric core nanoparticle such as silica surrounded by an ultrathin metal shell, often composed of gold for biomedical applications. Depending on the size and composition of each layer of the nanoshell, particles can be designed to either absorb or scatter light over much of the visible and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, including the near infrared region where penetration of light through tissue is maximal.

The assumption of linear time-invariance (LTI) in the human primary somatosensory cortex (SI) is assessed for fMRI signals generated by variable-duration vibrotactile stimuli. Predictions based on time-shifted summation (TSS) of responses to 2 s stimuli overestimate observed BOLD signal amplitudes in response to longer-duration stimuli, in agreement with previous findings in other primary sensory cortices. The recent outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) provided an opportunity to study the antibody response of infected individuals to the causative virus, SARS coronavirus. We examined serum samples obtained from 46 patients with SARS, 40 patients with non-SARS pneumonia, and 38 healthy individuals, by use of Western blotting (WB), enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA), and immunofluorescence assay, using both native and bacterially produced antigens of the virus. We found a highly restricted, immunoglobulin G-dominated antibody response in patients with SARS, directed most frequently (89% by ELISA) and predominantly at the nucleocapsid.

A single-chain antibody fragment (scFv) was constructed from a hybridoma antibody that binds to phosphorylcholine (PC) only when this hapten is presented in the form of the immunizing antigen (derived from Trichinella) but not when it is presented on other carriers (as found, for example, in pneumococcal capsules). The scFv derivative was found to lack this carrier specificity as it bound indiscriminately, but specifically, to the various PC-associated antigens, and exhibits a two-fold lower affinity (3.5x10(5)M(-1)) for nitrophenyl-PC than the native antibody.

Experimental autoimmune glomerulonephritis (EAG), an animal model of Goodpasture's disease, can be induced in Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats by a single injection of rat glomerular basement membrane (GBM) in adjuvant.
