Conservation of bumblebee populations is essential because of their role as pollinators. Declines in bumblebee abundance have been documented in recent decades, mostly attributed to agricultural intensification, landscape simplification and loss of semi-natural grasslands. In this study, we investigated the effects of landscape composition on bumblebee abundance at different spatial scales in 476 semi-natural grassland sites in southern Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • A hypertensive crisis significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular events, and this study focuses on understanding myocardial tissue characteristics in patients experiencing this condition using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging.
  • The study analyzed 82 patients—majority had hypertensive emergencies—and found that patients with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) presented higher native T1 values and T2 mapping values, indicating potential myocardial edema.
  • Results suggested that certain imaging biomarkers such as T1 and T2 mapping could help distinguish between hypertensive emergencies and urgencies, with higher values in emergencies reflecting worse myocardial condition.

Background: The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has decreased the morbidity and mortality associated with HIV infection; however, this survival advantage is not free from complications. HIV patients are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease compared with the general population, and right ventricular systolic dysfunction is said to be associated with worse outcomes. We, therefore, sought to assess right ventricular systolic function using tricuspid annular plain systolic excursion (TAPSE) among HIV patients on HAART and its relationship with viral load and CD4 cell count.

Background: The initial sign of hypertensive heart disease (HHD) is left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD), which is caused by remodeling of the left ventricle and left atrium, resulting in impaired relaxation of the left ventricle. LVDD is also partly due to left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). If left untreated, LVDD can progress to diastolic heart failure and systolic heart failure.

Hypertensive crisis can present with cardiac troponin elevation and unobstructed coronary arteries. We used cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging to characterize the myocardial tissue in patients with hypertensive crisis, elevated cardiac troponin, and unobstructed coronary arteries. Patients with hypertensive crisis and elevated cardiac troponin with coronary artery stenosis <50% were enrolled.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effects of hypertensive crisis on heart health, focusing on left ventricular (LV) changes using advanced imaging techniques.
  • The research involved 82 patients, finding that a significant percentage had left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and impaired heart function, especially those experiencing a hypertensive emergency.
  • Key findings show that nonischemic late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) was prevalent, with creatinine levels and LV mass being important factors; further long-term studies are needed to understand the impact of these changes.

There is a growing interest in the role of biomarkers in differentiating hypertensive emergency from hypertensive urgency. This study aimed to determine the diagnostic utility of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hscTnT), and N-terminal prohormone of brain-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) for identifying hypertensive emergency. A diagnosis of hypertensive emergency was made based on a systolic blood pressure of ≥180 mmHg and/or a diastolic blood pressure of ≥110 mmHg with acute hypertension-mediated organ damage.

  • Systemic arterial hypertension is linked to cardiovascular issues, including aortic root dilation, which affects individuals regardless of age, gender, or body size; this study investigates its prevalence in untreated hypertensive patients.
  • Conducted over two years, the research involved 300 treatment-naïve hypertensive patients and 300 matched healthy controls, using 2D echocardiography to measure the aortic root diameter.
  • Results show that untreated hypertensive patients had significantly larger aortic root diameters compared to normotensive individuals, with a prevalence of aortic root dilation at 1.3% in the hypertensive group.

Background: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a common complication in patients with sickle cell anaemia (SCA), and it has been associated with systolic and diastolic dysfunction, and sudden death. There is a wide variation in the reported prevalence of LVH in patients with SCA, partly due to the varying criteria applied, and the impact of small weight and body surface area (BSA) in SCA patients. We used four different criteria to determine echocardiographic LVH and geometric patterns in patients with steady-state SCA.

Article Synopsis
  • Myocardial injury and myocardial infarction are serious complications during hypertensive emergencies and are linked to worse health outcomes.
  • A systematic review was conducted, analyzing 18 studies with over 7500 patients to determine the prevalence of myocardial issues in such emergencies.
  • Findings reveal that while myocardial infarction occurs in 3.6% to 59.6% of cases, and myocardial injury affects 15% to 63%, there's a lack of detailed reporting on these issues, indicating a need for further research to improve patient care.

HIV associated cardiomyopathy (HIVAC) is a poorly understood entity that may progress along a continuum. We evaluated a group of persons newly diagnosed with HIV and studied the evolution of cardiac abnormalities after ART initiation. We recruited a group of newly diagnosed, ART naïve persons with HIV and a healthy, HIV uninfected group.

Alteration of natural disturbances in human-modified landscapes has resulted in many disturbance-dependent species becoming rare. Conservation of such species requires efforts to maintain or recreate disturbance regimes. We compared benefits of confining efforts to habitats in protected areas (a form of land sparing) versus integrating them with general management of production land (a form of land sharing), using two examples: fire in forests and grazing in semi-natural grasslands.

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected persons on antiretroviral therapy (ART) have been shown to have functionally and structurally altered ventricles and may be related to cardiovascular inflammation. Mounting evidence suggests that the myocardium of HIV infected individuals may be abnormal before ART is initiated and may represent subclinical HIV-associated cardiomyopathy (HIVAC). The influence of ART on subclinical HIVAC is not known.

The impact of climate change on health, including changes in epidemiology and heat-related complications, has been variously reported in many parts of the world. Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state in north-eastern Nigeria, has been bearing the brunt of increasing temperatures over the past years, especially during the early months of the year building up to the commencement of the rainy season; with an average daily temperature forecasted to be around 40C. Patients with systemic hypertension and other forms of cardiovascular diseases are vulnerable to heat-related complications including dehydration, hypotension, and orthostatic hypotension (OH).

Digoxin toxicity has been implicated in all forms of cardiac arrhythmias with the notable exception of Mobitz II atrioventricular block, which is very rare. The manifestation is quite variable, ranging from being asymptomatic to gastrointestinal, cardiac, and neurologic symptoms. The manifestations can be protean in the elderly, the most vulnerable group, where degenerative cardiac conduction system diseases add another layer of intrigue by providing an intrinsic substrate for cardiac dysrhythmia.

While mortality in patients with hypertensive emergency has significantly improved over the past decades, the incidence and complications associated with acute hypertension-mediated organ damage have not followed a similar trend. Hypertensive emergency is characterized by an abrupt surge in blood pressure, mostly occurring in people with pre-existing hypertension to result in acute hypertension-mediated organ damage. Acute hypertension-mediated organ damage commonly affects the cardiovascular system, and present as acute heart failure, myocardial infarction, and less commonly, acute aortic syndrome.

Syncope is a common manifestation of both hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome. The most common arrhythmia in HCM is ventricular tachycardia (VT) and atrial fibrillation (AF). While preexcitation provides the substrate for reentry and supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), AF is more common in patients with preexcitation than the general population.
