Article Synopsis
  • Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic condition that can affect children and may lead to serious cardiovascular issues, like early atherosclerosis, due to ongoing inflammation.
  • This study compared 30 children with juvenile BD to 20 healthy controls, measuring their epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), finding that EAT was significantly thicker in BD patients, while CIMT did not show notable differences.
  • The findings suggest that increased EAT thickness could indicate a risk for early atherosclerosis in children with BD, highlighting the need for further research to explore screening for these risks in larger groups.

Objectives: Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHT) of the newborn is a disorder of circulatory transition resulting in high pulmonary vascular resistance with extrapulmonary right-to-left shunts causing hypoxemia. In this study, our aim was to evaluate the risk factors, administered treatments, and mortality of patients followed in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) due to PPHT over the past six years.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with PPHT and followed in the NICU between January 2017 and November 2022 were included in the study.

Background: The present study aims to evaluate possible cardiac involvement in juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) patients by conventional methods and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) along with a systematic review of the literature on cardiac features in JDM.

Methods: The study group consisted of JDM patients who underwent cardiac MRI. We conducted a systematic review of the published literature involving JDM patients with cardiac involvement.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate electrocardiographic and echocardiographic findings, Holter recordings of the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, and to identify prognostic factors for cardiac involvement.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed demographic characteristics, medical data, laboratory findings, electrocardiogram and echocardiographic findings, 24-hour Holter recordings, need for an ICU, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. Acute left ventricular systolic dysfunction was defined as left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) ≤%55 on echocardiography.

Objectives: Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a rare but severe condition resulting in excessive response of the immune system after SARS-CoV-2 infection. We report a single-center cohort of children with MIS-C, describing the spectrum of presentation, therapies, clinical course, and short-term outcomes.

Methods: This is a prospective observational study from to a tertiary pediatric rheumatology center including patients (aged 1 month to 21 years) diagnosed with MIS-C between April 2020-April 2021.

Background: Pulmonary vascular damage may be associated with oxidative stress in congenital heart diseases. We investigated whether small ventricular septal defects have an effect on the pulmonary bed.

Methods: This prospective cohort study included 100 patients with small ventricular septal defects and 75 healthy controls.

Background: To evaluate the short-term effectiveness of reduced-osmolarity oral rehydration salt formulation (ORS) and propranolol in children diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) in head-up tilt testing (HUTT).

Methods: Children were admitted with symptoms of orthostatic intolerance (OI) occurring in a standing position and disappearing in the supine position. Patients with heart rate increments of ≥40bpm and symptoms of OI constituted the pediatric POTS group in HUTT.

Aneurysms of the ascending aorta are frequently found in patients with a bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). This study assessed the risk factors of ascending aortic aneurysms and aortic elasticity in children with BAV. The study included 66 patients with no history of transcatheter intervention or surgical procedure who had been diagnosed with isolated BAV.

Cardiac hydatid cysts are a rare presentation of hydatid cyst disease in the body, with a reported cardiac involvement rate of <2%. The left ventricle is the most common site of cardiac involvement. Here, we report a patient with a hydatid cyst that ruptured into the pericardium after producing an aneurysm on the right ventricular free wall, appearing as fibrinated fluid and a solid mass lesion in the pericardium.

Background: Premature ventricular contractions are accepted as benign in structurally normal hearts. However, reversible cardiomyopathy can sometimes develop. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids have anti-arrhythmic properties in animals and humans.

Objective: The aim of this study is to define the predictors of chronic carditis in patients with acute rheumatic carditis (ARC).

Methods: Patients diagnosed with ARC between May 2010 and May 2011 were included in the study. Echocardiography, electrocardiography, lymphocyte subset analysis, acute phase reactants, plasma albumin levels, and antistreptolysin-O (ASO) tests were performed at initial presentation.

Background: Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is a chronic vascular disease characterized by a persistence of myocardial and vascular alterations. We aimed to evaluate children who have had successful coarctation surgery or balloon dilatation to evaluate the elasticity of the aorta, left atrial ejection force (AEF) and myocardial performance collectively at midterm follow-up.

Methods: Nineteen patients (7.

Objective: The aims of this study were to demonstrate ventricular function changes in patients with congenital hypothyroidism and to investigate whether there is an association between any such changes and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels using M-mode and Doppler electrocardiography (ECG) and tissue Doppler imaging (TDI).

Methods: Twenty-seven patients 5-30 days of age with congenital hypothyroidism who were scheduled to receive L-thyroxine treatment and 20 healthy newborns were included in this study. Twelve-lead ECG and M-mode TDI recordings of the patient and healthy groups were obtained.

The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for persistence of coronary artery abnormalities (CAAs) in Kawasaki disease and to compare the differences between complete (n=25) and incomplete (n=18) forms of the disease in relation to CAAs. The patients' demographic (age and sex), clinical (season of admission, duration of fever, form of Kawasaki disease), laboratory (complete blood count, eosinophil count, serum biochemistry, C-reactive protein level, erythrocyte sedimentation rate [ESR], urinary analysis), echocardiographic and therapeutic data were evaluated retrospectively from the medical records. The incidence of sterile pyuria was nearly twofold greater in patients with initial CAAs than in patients in which CAAs were not present (25% and 13%, respectively; p=0.

Objective: An arterial switch operation converts the left ventricle (LV) into the systemic ventricle, replacing the right ventricle (RV), which is the systemic ventricle during the prenatal period. The procedure is performed in patients with arterial transposition and those in whom a coronary reimplantation procedure is performed. Therefore, the adaptation of LV and RV to the arterial switch operations is an interesting issue.
