Primary lacrimal sac Burkitt lymphoma: A case report and literature review.

Purpose: To highlight a case report of high-grade primary lacrimal sac Burkitt lymphoma in a young adult.

Observation: A 25-year-old gentleman was referred to the oculoplastic center for left eye medial canthal progressive swelling at the level below the medial canthal tendon for two months associated with tearing. He was initially treated for preseptal cellulitis but failed to respond to antibiotics.

Concordance between immunohistochemistry and MSI analysis for detection of MMR/MSI status in colorectal cancer patients.

Background: Recently, screening of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients for mismatch repair/microsatellite instability (MMR/MSI) status is widely practiced due to its potential predictive and prognostic roles and a screening tool to reveal Lynch Syndrome (LS). The purpose of the study was to evaluate concordance between immunohistochemistry (IHC) and MSI analysis methods for detection of MMR/MSI status in colorectal cancer patients in Kuantan, Pahang.

Methods: Fifty selected CRC cases of deficient mismatch repair (dMMR) and proficient mismatch repair (pMMR) which were identified immunohistochemically in the previous study were subjected to MSI analysis.

Schizophrenia and Rheumatoid Arthritis Genetic Scenery: Potential Non-HLA Genes Involved in Both Diseases Relationship.

: The link between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and schizophrenia (SZ) has long been a hot topic of deliberation among scientists from various fields. Especially when it comes to genetics, the connection between RA and SZ is still up for discussion, as can be observed in this study. The HLA genes are the most disputed in identifying a connection between the two diseases, but a more thorough investigation of other genes that may be ignored could yield something even more interesting.

Modulatory Effects of Isolated Lactobacillus paracasei from Malaysian Water Kefir Grains on the Intestinal Barrier and Gut Microbiota in Diabetic Mice.

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is one of the four major types of non-communicable diseases that have become a global health concern. Water kefir is a product of a brown sugar solution fermented with kefir grains which comprises around 30 microbial species in its grains. Water kefir possesses a wide range of health benefits, including anti-hyperlipidemic effects, and reduces hypertension and blood glucose levels in animal models.

The use of hearing tests to assess otitis media with effusion in children with Down syndrome.

Background: Down syndrome is associated with an increased risk for otitis media with effusion (OME), a childhood condition in which fluid accumulates in the middle ear, potentially leading to hearing loss. The American Academy of Pediatrics Down syndrome guidelines and the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery OME guidelines recommend hearing testing to assess the hearing status of children with Down syndrome diagnosed with OME.

Methods: Through an Institutional Review Board approved retrospective chart review at Children's Mercy, this project assessed how clinical factors affect the frequency in which children with Down syndrome receive hearing testing after diagnosis of OME.

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging and clinical follow-up in patients with clinically suspected myocarditis after COVID-19 vaccination.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) findings and their relationship to longer-term clinical outcomes in patients with suspected myocarditis following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination.

Methods: Consecutive adult patients who underwent clinically indicated CMR for evaluation of suspected myocarditis following messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA)-based COVID-19 vaccination at a single center between 2021 and 2022 were retrospectively evaluated. Patients were classified based on the revised Lake Louise criteria for T1-based abnormalities (late gadolinium enhancement [LGE] or high T1 values) and T2-based abnormalities (regional T2-hyperintensity or high T2 values).

The Caregiving Burden of Older People with Functional Deficits and Associated Factors on Malaysian Family Caregivers.

Background: Providing care to older people can be an extremely complex task, given their increased functional deficits, which may lead to family caregivers experiencing burnout and a deteriorated health status. This study investigated the caregiving burden of older people with functional deficits on family caregivers and associated factors.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on family caregivers of older people with functional deficits living in FELDA schemes in Pahang, Malaysia.

The impact of circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D and vitamin D receptor variation on leukemia-lymphoma outcome: Molecular and cytogenetic study.

Vitamin D (VD) potentially has a crucial function in the development of cancerous cells. This study aims to detect the role of vitamin D concentration and its receptor polymorphisms as possible prognostic biomarkers in patients with leukemia/lymphoma and further will attempt to detect the presence of the Philadelphia chromosome abnormality in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Seventy-five patients, in addition to 50 healthy individuals were included.

<b>Background and Objective:</b> Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) regulate several body processes related to metabolism, immunological function and oncogenesis. Low vitamin D levels are recognized as associated with a higher incidence of hematologic malignancies and poor outcomes. This study aims to determine whether vitamin D levels and VDR contribute to multiple myeloma (MM).

Vitamin D3 Exerts Beneficial Effects on C2C12 Myotubes through Activation of the Vitamin D Receptor (VDR)/Sirtuins (SIRT)1/3 Axis.

The onset of sarcopenia is associated with a decline in vitamin D receptor (VDR) expression, wherein reduced VDR levels contribute to muscle atrophy, while heightened expression promotes muscle hypertrophy. Like VDR, the age-related decline in protein deacetylase sirtuin (SIRT) expression is linked to the development of sarcopenia and age-related muscle dysfunction. This study aimed to investigate whether the VDR agonist 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25VD3) exerts beneficial effects on muscles through interactions with sirtuins and, if so, the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Normal joint range of motion in children with Down syndrome.

Down syndrome (DS) is one of the most common chromosomal conditions that results in intellectual disability. Children with DS have many different inflammatory and noninflammatory conditions that can affect joint mobility leading to arthralgia and altered joint range of motion (ROM), and it is important to have normal reference values for comparison to determine the degree of impairment. The objective of this study was to establish normative joint ROM values, using a standardized measurement approach, for upper and lower joints of healthy children of both genders with DS.

Anti-Diabetic Effect of Lactobacillus Paracasei Isolated from Malaysian Water Kefir Grains.

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is alarming because it is always linked to the increase in chronic diseases, mortality, and socioeconomic burden. Water kefir has a wide range of functional and probiotic characteristics attributed to the microorganisms present in the kefir grains. The present study aims to evaluate the in vivo anti-diabetic potential of the isolated Lactobacillus paracasei from Malaysian water kefir grains (MWKG) which was reported to have excellent probiotic properties and high antioxidant activities as reported previously.

Effects of aging-induced obesity on the transcriptional expression of adipogenesis and thermogenic activity in the gonadal white adipose, brown adipose, and skeletal muscle tissues.

Purpose: Aging is closely associated with chronic metabolic diseases, such as obesity, which lead to increased adiposity, skeletal muscle wasting, and imbalanced cellular energy metabolism. However, transcriptional profiles representing energy imbalances in aging-induced obesity are not fully understood. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the candidate genes predominantly regulated in aging-related obesity in spontaneously aged mice.

X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis of iron ore at ancient Kedah iron smelting site, Sungai Batu archaeological complex, Bujang Valley, Kedah, Malaysia.

Archaeological excavations carried out on 17 iron smelting workshops at the Sungai Batu Archaeological Complex have found the raw materials of iron industry (hematite, magnetite and geotite) with iron slag, tuyere, remains of furnace, and iron ingots. In order to obtain primary data related to the location of the raw materials of iron smelting obtained, the survey and mapping activities were carried out using geological maps and Sungai Petani maps around UiTM Merbok, Bukit Inas, Merbok, Batu 5 Village, Paya Suri Village and Ayer Nasi Hill, Semeling. The results of the iron ore survey were then subjected to scientific analysis to compare the mineral composition with the findings of iron ore at the iron smelting site.

The pandemic has led to an improvement in air quality all around the world, including in Malaysia. Lockdowns have resulted in industry shutting down and road travel decreasing which can reduce the emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) and air pollution.

First-in-Human Study to Evaluate Safety, Tolerability, Pharmacokinetics, and Pharmacodynamics of a Rapidly Developed SARS-CoV-2 Therapeutic Antibody, AOD01, in Healthy Adults.

Introduction: AOD01 is a novel, fully human immunoglobulin (Ig) G1 neutralizing monoclonal antibody that was developed as a therapeutic against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This first-in-human study assessed safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics (PK), and pharmacodynamics of AOD01 in healthy volunteers.

Methods: Intravenous doses of AOD01 were evaluated in escalating cohorts [four single-dose cohorts (2, 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg) and one two-dose cohort (two doses of 20 mg/kg, 24 h apart)].

Introduction: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), and provides a target for a dendritic cell (DC) vaccine. CD137 ligand (CD137L) expressed on antigen presenting cells, costimulates CD137-expressing T cells, and reverse CD137L signaling differentiates monocytes to CD137L-DC, a type of DC, which is more potent than classical DC in stimulating T cells.

Methods: In this phase I study, patients with locally recurrent or metastatic NPC were administered CD137L-DC pulsed with EBV antigens (CD137L-DC-EBV-VAX).

Invasive syndrome with coexisting fungal endophthalmitis.

Endogenous endophthalmitis accounts for approximately 5 - 10% of all endophthalmitis cases. We report a case of a middle-aged gentleman with underlying uncontrolled diabetes mellitus who presented with fever and generalised body weakness for one week. He was diagnosed with invasive syndrome based on blood culture with presence of bilateral pleural effusion, liver abscess, renal impairment and sphenoidal sinusitis.

Opportunities, barriers, and recommendations in down syndrome research.

Background: Recent advances in medical care have increased life expectancy and improved the quality of life for people with Down syndrome (DS). These advances are the result of both pre-clinical and clinical research but much about DS is still poorly understood. In 2020, the NIH announced their plan to update their DS research plan and requested input from the scientific and advocacy community.
