Background And Aims: Hypoalbuminemia, as defined by serum albumin (SA) levels ≤35 g/L, is associated to venous and arterial thrombosis in general population and in patients at risk of cardiovascular disease. It is unknown if SA ≤35 g/L is also associated to portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in cirrhosis.

Methods: Cirrhotic patients enrolled in the Portal vein thrombosis Relevance On Liver cirrhosis: Italian Venous thrombotic Events Registry (PRO-LIVER) study (n = 753), were followed-up for 2 years to assess the risk of PVT, that was diagnosed by Doppler ultrasonography.

Heart failure (HF) is a clinical syndrome consisting of typical symptoms and signs due to structural and/or functional abnormalities of the heart, resulting in elevated intracardiac pressures and/or inadequate cardiac output. The vascular system plays a crucial role in the development and progression of HF regardless of ejection fraction, with endothelial dysfunction (ED) as one of the principal features of HF. The main ED manifestations (i.

Background: SARS- CoV-2 virus has had dramatic consequences worldwide being able to cause acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), massive thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and, finally, patients' death. In COVID-19 infection, platelets have a procoagulant phenotype that can cause thrombosis in the pulmonary and systemic vascular network. Aspirin is a well-known anti-platelet drug widely used for the prevention of cardiovascular events and systematic reviews suggest a possible benefit of low-dose aspirin (LDA) use in the prevention and treatment of ARDS in patients with COVID-19 infection.

Psychological testing is an important component of the screening process for public safety officers. The use of standardized measures is intended to increase the objectivity of preemployment evaluations, highlighting the importance of examining tests used in these assessments for evidence of differential validity. Differential validity is indicated when a screening measure is unequally associated with, or systematically over- or under-predicts, a criterion across demographic groups.

Over the past few years, COVID-19 pandemic has imposed a high toll worldwide, with a high burden of morbidity and mortality. Healthcare practitioners (HCPs) have been in the frontline since the beginning of the outbreak, and the high level of stress have affected their physical and mental status, as well as their relationships. We aimed at exploring the self-reported changes in comprehensive well-being in a cohort of Italian physicians.

Unlabelled: Cardiovascular disorders have been associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Here, we describe a case of transient constrictive pericarditis after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. A few days following SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, a 55-year-old man developed fever and chest pain exacerbated by movement and breathing, and acute pericarditis was diagnosed.

Background: The Canadian Syncope Risk Score (CSRS) has been proposed for syncope risk stratification in the emergency department (ED). The aim of this study is to perform an external multicenter validation of the CSRS and to compare it with clinical judgement.

Methods: Using patients previously included in the SyMoNE database, we enrolled subjects older than 18 years who presented reporting syncope at the ED.

We analyzed whether serum albumin is independently associated with portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in liver cirrhosis (LC) and if a biologic plausibility exists. This study was divided into three parts. In part 1 (retrospective analysis), 753 consecutive patients with LC with ultrasound-detected PVT were retrospectively analyzed.

Objectives: Thrombocytopenia is a hallmark for patients with cirrhosis and it is perceived as a risk factor for bleeding events. However, the relationship between platelet count and bleeding is still unclear.

Methods: We investigated the relationship between platelet count and major or clinical relevant nonmajor bleedings during a follow-up of ∼4 years.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with cirrhosis show higher levels of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and markers of platelet activation compared to healthy controls, indicating potential impaired or enhanced platelet activation.
  • The study found a significant correlation between LPS levels and gut permeability marker zonulin, suggesting a link between gut health and platelet behavior in cirrhosis.
  • LPS does not directly stimulate platelet activation, but it enhances the response of platelets to other activating agents, indicating a role in thrombotic complications related to cirrhosis.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a hallmark of generalized atherosclerosis. Depending on the specific diagnostic criteria that are being used, the prevalence of PAD may be as high as 30 % in the population of people 70 or more years old. Unfortunately, although PAD is prevalent and has many important consequences for patients, it is often under-detected and under-treated by primary care physicians.

In previous studies, we demonstrated that the benzodiazepine (BZP) receptors of the visual system are functionally preserved in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). We hypothesized that such a functional preservation is not confined to the visual system. In a 74-year-old woman suffering from CJD, three consecutive recording sessions of somatosensory cortical evoked potentials (SEPs) by right median nerve stimulation were carried out: (a) basal condition, without any pharmacologic treatment; (b) 1 min after i.
