Ovarian serous carcinoma is a gynecological malignancy associated with a high mortality rate, which is commonly diagnosed in the first instance at a late stage and has a propensity to develop resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy. Identifying reliable biomarkers for platinum sensitivity is critical for improving patient outcomes. Herein, we report the case of a 67-year-old man with severe coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pneumonia and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) mRNA vaccine breakthrough infection during immunosuppressive therapy for connective tissue disease-related interstitial lung disease (CTD-ILD). The patient received glucocorticoids combined with tacrolimus as maintenance therapy. His serum anti-SARS-CoV-2-immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody levels were extremely low at the onset of COVID-19 pneumonia, even after the second dose of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine (BNT162b2).

Introduction: Most pulmonary vasodilators are administered orally; however, in patients with pulmonary hypertension undergoing gastrointestinal surgery, a switch to parenteral drugs is needed. Parenteral pulmonary vasodilators carry a risk of infection and reduced quality of life owing to long-term central venous catheterization; therefore, it is preferable to switch them to oral vasodilators after surgery. Here, we present the case of a patient with systemic sclerosis complicated by pulmonary hypertension and colon cancer, for which treatment was successfully switched from epoprostenol to selexipag postoperatively.

The gut microbiota (GM) exerts a strong influence over the host immune system and dysbiosis of this microbial community can affect the clinical phenotype in chronic inflammatory conditions. To explore the role of the GM in lupus nephritis, we colonized NZM2410 mice with Segmented Filamentous Bacteria (SFB). Gut colonization with SFB was associated with worsening glomerulonephritis, glomerular and tubular immune complex deposition and interstitial inflammation compared to NZM2410 mice free of SFB.

Since being discovered over half a century ago, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been investigated extensively to characterize their cellular and physiological influences. MSCs have been shown to possess immunosuppressive capacity through inhibiting lymphocyte activation/proliferation and proinflammatory cytokine secretion while simultaneously demonstrating limited allogenic reactivity, which subsequently led to the evaluation of therapeutic feasibility to treat inflammatory diseases. Although regulatory constraints have restricted MSC development pharmacologically, limited clinical studies have shown encouraging results using MSC infusions to treat systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE); but, more trials will have to be performed to conclusively determine the clinical efficacy of MSCs to treat SLE.

Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis is a severe but treatment-responsive disorder, initially identified in young women with an ovarian teratoma. Symptoms include mood, behavior and personality irregularities that resemble acute psychosis. To improve our understanding of cervical adenocarcinoma (AD) and evaluate the clinical and pathological variables affecting its prognosis, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 455 patients with cervical cancer [International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage I/II; 91 cases with AD and 364 with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)] who underwent surgery at our hospital between January, 1995 and August, 2012 and compared the characteristics and prognoses between AD and SCC cases, including age, clinical stage, histological type, lymph node metastasis, lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI), cervical stromal invasion, parametrial invasion, vaginal invasion, corpus invasion, ovarian metastasis and tumor diameter.
