Among 87 patients who were previously treated for acute hepatitis of unknown etiology between 1992 and 2001 at five hospitals in Japan, 11 (13%) patients were positive for immunoglobulin M-class antibodies to hepatitis E virus (HEV) by enzyme immunoassay and had detectable HEV RNA by reverse transcription-PCR with two independent sets of primers derived from well-conserved genomic areas in open reading frames 1 and 2. A subset of caudate neurons fires before cues that instruct the monkey what he should do. To test the hypothesis that the anticipatory activity of such neurons depends on the context of stimulus-reward mapping, we examined their activity while the monkeys performed a memory-guided saccade task in which either the position or the color of a cue indicated presence or absence of reward. Some neurons showed anticipatory activity only when a particular position was associated with reward, while others fired selectively for color-reward associations.

Reward is a primary goal of behavior and is crucial for survival of animals. To explore the mechanisms underlying such reward-oriented behavior, we devised a memory-guided saccade task in which only one fixed direction out of four was rewarded, which was called the one-direction-rewarded task (1DR). As the rewarded direction was changed in four blocks, saccades in a given direction were rewarded in one block (constituting reward-oriented behavior), but non-rewarded in the other blocks (non-reward-oriented behavior).

We report a case of primary hepatic lymphoma in a 55-yr-old female patient with primary biliary cirrhosis and Sjögren's syndrome. On July 1994, a tumor measuring 11 mm in diameter was detected in the right lobe of the liver by abdominal ultrasonography. A needle biopsy specimen showed the lesion to contain small- and medium-sized lymphoid cells without obvious atypia, and a provisional diagnosis of pseudolymphoma was made.

Action is controlled by both motivation and cognition. The basal ganglia may be the site where these kinds of information meet. Using a memory-guided saccade task with an asymmetric reward schedule, we show that visual and memory responses of caudate neurons are modulated by expectation of reward so profoundly that a neuron's preferred direction often changed with the change in the rewarded direction.

We recorded saccade-related neurons in the vicinity of the dentate nucleus of the cerebellum in two monkeys trained to perform visually guided saccades and memory-guided saccades. Among 76 saccade-related neurons, 38 showed presaccadic bursts in all directions. More than 80% of such burst neurons were located in the area ventral to, not inside, the dentate nucleus, which corresponded to the basal interstitial nucleus (BIN as previously described).

We evaluated serum hyaluronate (HA) levels in 17 patients with acute hepatitis and 9 with fulminant hepatitis (FH). Upon admission, patients with FH showed increased levels of serum HA and these levels showed significant correlation with biochemical parameters such as human hepatocyte growth factor, hepaplastin test, and prothrombin activity. In patients with AH, the levels of serum HA decreased during convalescence.

We examined the associations of p53 expression and/or c-erbB-2 expression with Ag-NOR counts and clinicopathologic variables in 111 breast cancer patients, and assessed whether expression of either p53or c-erbB-2 would be useful prognostic indicators. There was no significant association between p53 expression and c-erbB-2 expression, but p53 expression and c-erbB-2 expression, especially in combination, were shown to be significantly associated with Ag-NOR counts and axillary lymph node metastasis. Although p53 expression and c-erbB-2 expression were significant prognostic factors by univariate analysis, they did not appear to be independent prognostic factors by multivariate analysis, in which nodal status was introduced using the Cox model.

Benzalkonium chloride (BA), a positively charged surface active agent, applied (> 10 nM) in the superfusing solution, produced a concentration-dependent reduction in the amplitude of both evoked endplate potentials (EPPs) and spontaneous miniature EPPs of the frog. Voltage-clamped endplate currents (EPCs) and spontaneous miniature endplate currents (MEPCs) were also diminished in amplitude, in the presence of BA (50-140 nM), whereas their time-course and reversal potential were not obviously affected. No significant change due to the addition of 50 nM BA was observed in apparent properties of the ACh channel estimated from ACh-induced current fluctuations.
