Without a protective atmosphere, space-exposed surfaces of airless Solar System bodies gradually experience an alteration in composition, structure and optical properties through a collective process called space weathering. The return of samples from near-Earth asteroid (162173) Ryugu by Hayabusa2 provides the first opportunity for laboratory study of space-weathering signatures on the most abundant type of inner solar system body: a C-type asteroid, composed of materials largely unchanged since the formation of the Solar System. Weathered Ryugu grains show areas of surface amorphization and partial melting of phyllosilicates, in which reduction from Fe to Fe and dehydration developed.

Article Synopsis
  • Samples from the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu, collected by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft, show evidence of carbon dioxide-bearing water inclusions in a pyrrhotite crystal, suggesting its parent asteroid formed in the outer Solar System.
  • The analyzed samples contain few high-temperature materials like chondrules, yet are abundant in low-temperature formation products like phyllosilicates and carbonates, indicating aqueous alteration in a low temperature, high pH environment.
  • Numerical simulations reveal that Ryugu's parent body likely formed about 2 million years after the Solar System began to develop, based on the mineralogical and physical properties of the samples.

Antiresorptive agent-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ARONJ), a multifactorial disease, can drastically affect a patient’s quality of life. Moreover, disease progression to severe acute inflammation can hinder treatment. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of the neutrophil−lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet−lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in predicting the risk of acute inflammation in patients with ARONJ.

Dust grains, formed around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, are accelerated by stellar radiation to drive stellar winds, which supply freshly synthesized nuclides to the Galaxy. Silicate is the dominant dust species in space, but ~40% of oxygen-rich AGB stars are thought to have comparable amounts of aluminum oxide dust. Dust formation and the wind-driving mechanism around these oxygen-rich stars, however, are poorly understood.

There is currently insufficient evidence to recommend a specific chemotherapeutic regimen as standard treatment for uterine sarcomas. In this study, we investigated the toxicity and effectiveness of ifosfamide, adriamycin and cisplatin (IAP therapy) in patients with progressive and recurrent uterine sarcoma. A total of 11 patients with progressive or recurrent uterine sarcoma containing leiomyosarcoma (LMS), undifferentiated endometrial sarcoma (UES) or adenosarcoma, who were diagnosed at our institution, were retrospectively investigated.

Objectives: We examined the factors considered to change body composition and blood biochemistry indicators in menopausal middle-aged and elderly women. These changes result from exercise by walking as part of their daily activities and lemon consumption by women who live on the small islands of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan's largest citrus fruit (lemon)-producing region.

Methods: Between September 2011 and March 2012, we recorded the daily lemon consumption and the number of steps taken by 101 middle-aged and elderly female lemon farmers.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to improve the diagnosis of calcified blood vessels in lower extremities using a new technique called orbital synchronized helical scanning computed tomography angiography (OS-SCTA).
  • A phantom study and clinical trial involving 58 patients showed OS-SCTA has high sensitivity and specificity for detecting vascular issues, comparable to traditional angiography.
  • The results indicate that OS-SCTA effectively identifies arterial problems even in calcified segments, making it a valuable tool for diagnosing vascular conditions in patients with peripheral artery disease.

We conducted a survey of 111 healthy middle-aged and older women, aged 40 to 80 years, to elucidate the relationships between blood leptin and adiponectin levels and bone mineral density (BMD) in September 2008. We examined the associations between the blood levels of these adipocytokines and the lumbar spine (L2-L4), left femoral, and distal forearm BMD after adjustment for the age and body fat percentage. No correlation was observed between leptin and the BMD.

4H-SiC is a wide-bandgap semiconductor with potential applications in power devices. The lack of a liquid phase in SiC hinders conventional crystal growth from the melt; consequently, SiC wafers still have low quality and are nearly 100 times more expensive than Si wafers. To take advantage of the solution growth for improving the quality and reducing the cost of SiC, Ni addition to Si-Ti flux has been investigated.

The cultivation of nitritation granules in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) by seeding conventional floccular activated sludge was investigated using ethanol-based synthetic wastewater. Reducing settling time offers selection pressure for aerobic granulation, and stepwise increase of influent N/C ratio can help to selectively enrich ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in aerobic granules. The spherical shaped granules were observed with the mean diameter of 1.
