  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common autoimmune disease affecting joints, and this study explores the anti-inflammatory effects of piperine (PIP), an alkaloid from black pepper, using albumin nanoparticles as a treatment method.
  • The researchers tested PIP and PIP-loaded Bovine Serum Albumin nanoparticles (PIP-BSA NPs) on adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) rats, measuring clinical scores, joint inflammation, and levels of inflammatory cytokines.
  • Results showed that both treatments effectively reduced inflammation and clinical symptoms, with PIP outperforming PIP-BSA NPs in some aspects, suggesting that future studies could explore their combined use for better results in RA treatment.

This study aimed to compare postural assessment and postural awareness using the artificial intelligence posture evaluation and correction system (APECS) in individuals receiving posture training. Participants' physical characteristics were recorded. The participants' posture was evaluated with APECS and the New York posture rating chart test (NYPR), and their body and postural awareness was evaluated with the body awareness questionnaire (BAQ), postural awareness form (PAF) and postural habits and awareness scale (PHAS).

Article Synopsis
  • * Genetic analysis showed that individuals linked to mpox clusters had a higher likelihood of previously being diagnosed with HIV, indicating overlapping sexual networks for both viruses.
  • * The study found that highly connected individuals were more likely to get infected early in the outbreak, leading to a rapid rise and fall of cases, and emphasized that mpox transmission shares dynamics with other sexually transmitted infections.

Article Synopsis
  • * Interviews with 11 experts identified eight categories of barriers, leading to a questionnaire that surveyed 112 medical professionals involved in ESKD care, with a response rate of 47.3%.
  • * The analysis revealed five main barriers to CKM, with "lack of palliative care experience" and "lack of support system" being the most significant, while most respondents viewed CKM as a viable treatment option for ESKD.

Socio-economic disparities were associated with disproportionate viral incidence between neighborhoods of New York City (NYC) during the first wave of SARS-CoV-2. We investigated how these disparities affected the co-circulation of SARS-CoV-2 variants during the second wave in NYC. We tested for correlation between the prevalence, in late 2020/early 2021, of Alpha, Iota, Iota with E484K mutation (Iota-E484K), and B.

Objectives: Early adolescence is a period of growth and development determined by the onset of puberty, during which important changes in psychological development and social roles occur. Excessive use of the internet, especially in adolescents in this period, causes health problems such as postural disorders, vision problems, sedentary life, and unbalanced nutrition. When the studies are analyzed, it is observed that postural disorders are observed in children and adolescents.

Importance: Despite its prohibition by the United Nations Convention against Torture and other international treaties, torture has been perpetrated against countless individuals worldwide, and health care practitioners globally are increasingly encountering refugee torture survivors in their clinical practices. The methods, geographic distribution, and frequency of torture globally are not well described, which limits health care practitioners' ability to adequately diagnose and treat the sequelae of torture.

Objective: To rank the commonness of torture methods and identify the regions of the world with which they are associated.

Article Synopsis
  • HIF-PHIs are a new class of medications for treating renal anemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, affecting various biological processes beyond just red blood cell production.
  • A study analyzed plasma metabolomic profiles in 10 hemodialysis patients who switched from erythropoiesis-stimulating agents to the HIF-PHI daprodustat, revealing significant changes in four metabolites and notable changes in five others.
  • The findings suggest alterations in key metabolic pathways after switching medications, highlighting the need to further explore the potential side effects of long-term HIF-PHI use in CKD patients.

Metformin-associated lactic acidosis is a well-known metformin treatment complication; however, the development of euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis (euDKA) has rarely been reported. Here we report a case of lactic acidosis and euDKA after metformin overdose. A 57-year-old female patient was transferred to our hospital with severe metabolic acidosis and acute kidney injury.

Objectives: The prolonged effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to have a serious impact on healthcare workers. We described and compared the experiences of healthcare workers in Japan during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic from March to May 2020, and during the lull from June to July 2020.

Design: In this qualitative study, we used a web-based survey to obtain comments from healthcare workers about their experiences during the pandemic, and explored these using inductive content analysis.

Background: In recent years, bioimpedance analysis has come to be widely used in clinical practice for dialysis patients, but there is not sufficient consensus on its significance. We aimed to examine the merits of performing bioimpedance analysis in addition to conventional evaluation methods for dry weight such as measuring human atrial natriuretic peptide (hANP), blood pressure, and cardiothoracic ratio in patients on chronic hemodialysis.

Methods: Body composition of 78 hemodialysis patients was performed by using a new and more accurate segmental multifrequency bioimpedance analysis device (Seca medical body composition analyzer 525, Seca GmbH & Co.

Background: Effectiveness of restricting healthcare providers (HCPs) from working based on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-like symptoms should be evaluated.

Methods: A total of 495 HCPs in a tertiary care hospital in Tokyo, Japan, participated in this study between June and July in 2020. Analysis of serum anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibody to identify infected HCPs, questionnaire surveys, and medical record reviews were conducted to evaluate the appropriateness of symptom-based work restriction for 10 days.

The tumor microenvironment contributes significantly to tumor initiation, progression, and resistance to chemotherapy. Much of our understanding of the tumor and its microenvironment is developed using various methods of cell culture. Throughout the last two decades, research has increasingly shown that 3D cell culture systems can remarkably recapitulate the complexity of tumor architecture and physiology compared to traditional 2D models.

A 37-year-old African-British man was referred to our hospital for detailed examination because of persistent fever, swelling and pain in both ankle joints, and blurred vision for two months. Inguinal lymph node biopsy showed a large number of epithelioid granulomas without necrosis. Granulomatous anterior uveitis, nephropathy, high serum angiotensin-converting enzyme activity, and high serum-soluble interleukin-2 receptor were observed, and the diagnosis of systemic sarcoidosis was made.

Acidemia is one of the risk factors for end-stage kidney disease and increases the mortality rate of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Although urinary ammonium (U-NH ) is the crucial component of renal acid excretion, U-NH concentration is not routinely measured. To estimate U-NH , urine osmolal gap (UOG = urine osmolality - [2(Na + K ) + urea + glucose]) is calculated and the formula (U-NH  = UOG/2) has traditionally been used.
