To address the challenges of accurately citing Japanese medical literature in English journals, the essential guidelines "Citing Medicine" by the National Library of Medicine were reviewed, focusing on practical adjustments to enhance accessibility. Key proposals include the use of persistent identifiers (Digital Object Identifier, PubMed Identifier, and International Standard Book Number), proper citation of online content, and the inclusion of romanized Japanese article titles. The selection of accessible journal titles and the importance of consistency were also discussed to avoid confusion.

Background/aim: Although the frequency of small bowel obstructions after liver surgery is generally considered low, previous studies have followed-up patients for less than a year, thus the incidence of small bowel obstructions several years after surgery is unknown. Furthermore, the rise in laparoscopic surgeries and the use of adhesion prevention materials may influence the occurrence of small bowel obstructions. This  study aimed to assess the incidence of small bowel obstructions within a five-year period following liver surgery and identify the associated risk factors.

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is caused by the aberrant expansion of CTG repeats within the DMPK gene. This study investigated the potential binding of "X-linker-Y" type molecules to the CTG/CTG motif present in CTG repeats, using heterocyclic units X and Y capable of forming complementary hydrogen bonds with nucleobases. Among the tested molecules, the heterodimer of 2-amino-1,8-naphthyridine (X) and 3-aminoisoquinoline (Y) showed significant binding to the CTG/CTG motif.

Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to compare the safety and effectiveness of laparoscopic versus open surgery after SEMS placement in patients with obstructive colorectal cancer.
  • The analysis included data from 15 studies with 883 patients and showed that laparoscopic surgery had a significantly lower postoperative complication rate compared to open surgery.
  • However, there were no significant differences in long-term outcomes, such as 3-year recurrence-free survival and overall survival rates, between the two surgical approaches.

The protein dynamical transition at ~200 K, where the biomolecule transforms from a harmonic, non-functional form to an anharmonic, functional state, has been thought to be slaved to the thermal activation of dynamics in its surface hydration water. Here, by selectively probing the dynamics of protein and hydration water using elastic neutron scattering and isotopic labeling, we found that the onset of anharmonicity in the two components around 200 K is decoupled. The one in protein is an intrinsic transition, whose characteristic temperature is independent of the instrumental resolution time, but varies with the biomolecular structure and the amount of hydration, while the one of water is merely a resolution effect.

Background: The survival benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy after surgical resection of oligometastases from colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. The prognostic role of circulating-tumor DNA (ctDNA) was reported recently and a risk stratification strategy based on monitoring minimal/molecular residual disease (MRD) has been proposed, however, which drug regimen is most effective for ctDNA-positive patients is unknown.

Methods/design: Oligometastatic CRC patients planning to undergo surgery were registered in this study.

The present study investigated the role of ramucirumab (RAM) in treating liver metastases (LMs) as a second-line or salvage treatment in patients with advanced CRC. Of the 36 patients, 21 (58%) received RAM plus folinic acid, fluorouracil and irinotecan (FOLFIRI) as second-line treatment, whereas 15 (42%) received it in a salvage setting. The median overall survival time was 23 months [95% confidence interval (CI), 12-34 months] for those in the second-line treatment group and 8 months (95% CI, 5-19 months) for those in the salvage treatment group.

For the development of the next generation of fuel cells, it is essential to create an innovative design principle of polymer electrolytes that is beyond extension of the existing strategy. In the present study, we focused on the surface hopping proton conduction mechanism where an activation energy for proton conduction is greatly reduced by decreasing the distance between SO groups. Our gyroid nanostructured polymer film (Film-G), with a hydrophilic surface where the SO groups are aligned densely and precisely, shows high proton conductivity of the order of 10 S cm when the water content is about 15 wt%.
