Emergent ascending aortic replacement and extended myectomy were performed in a woman with acute aortic dissection who was aged 63 years. Preoperative transthoracic echocardiography performed in the intensive care unit showed only slight left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction, but intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography after induction of anesthesia revealed pericardial effusion, systolic anterior motion(SAM), and associated mitral regurgitation(MR). Perioperative SAM and MR are sometimes facilitated under various hemodynamic conditions, but in this case, the left ventricular wall was thick and LVOT appeared to be obstructive by a hypertrophied septum.

Acute scrotum is a rare complication of acute Kawasaki disease (KD), less well recognized than other disease manifestations. We describe the cases of two patients, aged 59 months and 19 months, with hydrocele testis in the acute phase of KD. Scrotal ultrasound and trans-illumination were used in the diagnosis of hydrocele testis.

To understand the yeast response to high-linear energy transfer (LET) ionizing radiation (IR), we investigated global gene expression in yeast irradiated by three types of high-LET IR (fast neutrons, heavy ions, and thermal neutrons) and gamma rays using DNA microarray analysis. Stationary cells were irradiated by each IR and recultured in yeast-peptone-dextrose medium to allow repair for 40 min. RNA was then isolated from three independent samples of irradiated yeast.
