Article Synopsis
  • A study in Kochi Prefecture, Japan, observed a decrease in emergency transportations for acute alcohol intoxication during the early COVID-19 pandemic and aimed to track changes over the next four years.
  • The analysis of 107,013 emergency cases showed a consistent decline in such transportations from 2019 (1.8%) to 2023 (1.3%), with significant reductions noted each year compared to 2019.
  • These findings suggest that even as social activities resumed post-pandemic, the number of alcohol-related emergencies remained lower than pre-pandemic levels.

Background: Although distal pancreatectomy (DP) is crucial for the treatment of pancreatic diseases, it often leads to postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF), a complication with significant management challenges and health effects. Despite the use of various techniques, including suturing methods, staplers, and biodegradable materials, the optimal strategy to reduce POPF remains unclear. This study investigated the combined use of powered staplers and polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheets to mitigate POPF.

Background: Laparoscopic hepatectomy for colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) is performed worldwide. However, owing to a lack of palpatory information and difficulties associated with accurate intraoperative ultrasonographic diagnosis, the tumor may be exposed at the hepatic transection margin. This study aimed to investigate the pathological significance of near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging with indocyanine green (ICG)-guided laparoscopic hepatectomy and determine its usefulness in securing the resection margin for CRLMs.

Background: Patients with resectable (R) or borderline resectable (BR) pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) sometimes show unexpected liver, peritoneal, and para-aortic lymph node metastases intraoperatively. Despite radical pancreatectomy, a nonnegligible number of patients relapse within 6 months after surgery. The aim of this study was to identify the preoperative predictors of occult metastases (OM), defined as intraoperative distant metastases or within 6 months after pancreatectomy.

Background: Pancreatic tail cancer (Pt-PC) is generally considered resectable when metastasis is absent, but doubts persist in clinical practice due to the variability in local tumor extent. We conducted a multicenter retrospective study to comprehensively identify prognostic factors associated with Pt-PC after resection.

Methods: We enrolled 100 patients that underwent distal pancreatectomy.

Pancreatic cancer is one of the cancers with very poor prognosis; there is an urgent need to identify novel biomarkers to improve its clinical outcomes. Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) from liquid biopsy has arisen as a promising biomarker for cancer detection and surveillance. However, it is known that the ctDNA detection rate in resected pancreatic cancer is low compared with other types of cancer.

Background: Few cases have been reported of colorectal cancer with inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) branching abnormalities; therefore, the lymphatic flow in such cases remains unknown. We report the first case of locally advanced rectal cancer in which the IMA arose from the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) in which we achieved to visualize the lymphatic flow.

Case Presentation: A 65-year-old woman complaining of bloody stools was investigated in our hospital and suspected with rectal cancer.

Primary bronchial tumors are extremely rare. However, symptoms, such as coughing and wheezing, are not specific to this disease, and primary bronchial tumors are often misdiagnosed as bronchial asthma. This report describes the case of a pregnant patient with a bronchial tumor that mimicked deteriorating bronchial asthma.

Purpose: Extended pancreatectomy for locally advanced pancreatobiliary malignancy often involves combined major arterial resection (AR) and reconstruction (ARc). By limiting candidate inflow for ARc after combined resection of the celiac arterial system over a long distance, we evaluated whether great saphenous vein graft (GSVG) is an alternative conduit for obtaining non-anatomical arterial inflow.

Methods: ARc with GSVG conduit was undertaken prior to resection.
