Klotho deficiency is prevalent in various chronic kidney diseases. Although klotho is known to bind transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) receptor 1 to antagonize renal fibrosis, TGFβ also maintains regulatory T cells with inducing forkhead box protein P3 (FOXP3). Female New Zealand Black/White F (NZBWF1) mice were divided into two groups (n = 10 for each): one group was treated with daily subcutaneous injection of klotho protein (30 μg/kg/day) for 8 weeks, and the other only received vehicle.

Objectives: Spread through air spaces (STAS) is considered a poor prognostic factor in patients with resected non-small lung cell cancer; however, the clinical significance of STAS extent remains unclear. We hypothesized that the further the tumour cells spread from the tumour edge, the worse the prognosis becomes.

Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed the data of 642 patients with completely resected pathological stage I-III non-small lung cell cancer between 2008 and 2018.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the role of CD155 expression in lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) and its potential as a target for cancer immunotherapy, revealing its importance in tumor progression and immune evasion.
  • - Out of 264 patients analyzed, over half showed high CD155 expression, which correlated with worse outcomes and specific clinical features, such as pleural and vascular invasion.
  • - High CD155 expression was found to be an independent negative prognostic factor, particularly affecting overall survival in patients with PD-L1-positive tumors, while not impacting disease-free survival.

  • Intramuscular hemangioma is a rare, benign tumor commonly found in the limbs of younger individuals, with a high local recurrence rate of 30-50%.
  • A case of a 29-year-old man with an asymptomatic mass in his chest wall led to the diagnosis of this tumor after imaging studies, and it was successfully removed using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.
  • Post-surgery analysis confirmed the tumor as an intramuscular hemangioma, and there was no recurrence noted during a 1-year follow-up, highlighting the need for careful consideration of such tumors in young patients.

Antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) are a therapeutic modality for incurable diseases. However, systemic injection of gapmer-type ASOs causes class-related toxicities, including prolongation of activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and thrombocytopenia. We previously reported that cholesterol-conjugated DNA/RNA heteroduplex oligonucleotides (Chol-HDOs) exhibit significantly enhanced gene-silencing effects compared to ASOs, even in the central nervous system, by crossing the blood-brain barrier.

Article Synopsis
  • High recurrence rates after surgery for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) create challenges in patient care, necessitating a focus on the timing and location of these recurrences for better management.
  • A study of 495 patients revealed that most recurrences happened within 2 years, especially within the first 6 months, which correlated with poorer post-recurrence survival (PRS).
  • Liver metastases were a particularly bad sign for patient prognosis, while the timing of brain metastases did not significantly impact survival outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the role of preoperative serum creatine kinase (CK) levels as a prognostic factor for patients with thymic epithelial tumors undergoing surgery.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 120 patients, finding that a low CK level was linked to lower serum albumin and cholesterol, as well as decreased muscle mass (sarcopenia).
  • The findings indicated that low CK levels were associated with poorer disease-free and overall survival, suggesting that CK could be a useful biomarker for predicting postoperative outcomes.
