Radon is a known risk factor for lung cancer; however, it can be used beneficially, such as in radon therapy. We have previously reported the enhancement of antioxidant effects associated with trace amounts of oxidative stress as one of the positive biological effects of radon inhalation. However, the biological effects of radon inhalation are incompletely understood, and more detailed and comprehensive studies are required.

Article Synopsis
  • A study looked at the safety of continuing blood thinners (warfarin and DOACs) in patients needing a stomach procedure for early cancer.
  • It found that people taking warfarin didn't have any bleeding after the procedure, while some people taking DOACs did.
  • The researchers suggest that it's safer to keep using warfarin and that stopping DOACs too close to the procedure can lead to more bleeding problems.

  • The () gene is identified as a maternal-effect lethal gene that regulates core histones, but existing mutant strains may have background genetic mutations affecting results.
  • Researchers developed two new tools: a CRISPR/Cas9 knockout for genetic analysis and an epitope-tagged allele for studying cellular effects, confirming that the gene causes maternal-effect lethality that can be mitigated by reducing histone gene copies.
  • Despite previous beliefs, they found that the gene does not repress core histone transcript levels, leaving the molecular reasons for its lethal effects still unclear.

Delayed post-hypoxic leukoencephalopathy (DPHL) is a poorly recognized syndrome characterized by neuropsychiatric symptoms following recovery from an acute hypoxic episode. Although most cases are related to carbon monoxide poisoning, some have been linked to excessive opioid use. Opioid intoxication has recently become known for manifesting the characteristic imaging findings involving cerebellar, hippocampal, and basal nuclei transient edema with restricted diffusion (CHANTER) syndrome.

The objective of this study was to clarify the long-term prognosis of patients with gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma with additional copies of MALT1. In this multicenter retrospective study, we enrolled 145 patients with gastric MALT lymphoma who underwent fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis to detect t(11;18) translocation. The patient cohort was divided into three groups: Group A (n = 87), comprising individuals devoid of the t(11;18) translocation or extra MALT1 copies; Group B (n = 27), encompassing patients characterized by the presence of the t(11;18) translocation; and Group C (n = 31), including patients with extra MALT1 copies.

Craniosynostosis is a common yet complex birth defect, characterized by premature fusion of the cranial sutures that can be syndromic or nonsyndromic. With over 180 syndromic associations, reaching genetic diagnoses and understanding variations in underlying cellular mechanisms remains a challenge. Variants of FGFR2 are highly associated with craniosynostosis and warrant further investigation.

We investigated the previously unexplored domain of water vapor/gas separation using graphene oxide (GO) membranes, expecting future applications, including gas dehumidifiers and superior humidity controllers. While the importance of manipulation of GO nanosheet size and surface chemistry in traditional water purification and gas separation has been acknowledged, their potential impact on water vapor/gas separation remained unexplored until now. We applied sonication and hydrogen peroxide treatments to GO water dispersions and systematically evaluated the size and surface chemistry of each GO nanosheet.

  • Gastric emphysema is a rare condition involving gas in the stomach's walls without infection, often reported in single cases; this study analyzes a larger cohort of 45 patients to understand its features and outcomes.
  • The average age of patients diagnosed was 68.6 years, with common underlying issues including nasogastric tube placement, diabetes, and malignancies.
  • Most patients were treated conservatively, leading to favorable recovery in 35 cases, while 7 patients died soon after diagnosis; endoscopic evaluations revealed specific mucosal patterns associated with the condition, marking this as the first detailed report on such findings in English literature.

  • A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of endoscopic resection (ER) for elderly patients (≥75 years) with early gastric cancer (EGC), as previous evidence was limited.
  • The analysis involved 3,371 patients with 3,821 EGCs, highlighting key outcomes such as high rates of successful resections and low rates of complications, particularly for lesions within the established treatment guidelines.
  • The findings suggest that lesions of ≤3 cm and those classified as elderly-low have the potential to be new indicators for ER suitability, demonstrating favorable curative outcomes for elderly patients.

  • The study aimed to explore how common post-stroke depression is in a rehabilitation ward and its impact on recovery outcomes.
  • In a cohort of 114 stroke patients, 9.6% were found to have depression, which was linked to lower functional improvement and longer hospital stays compared to non-depressed patients.
  • The results suggest that those with post-stroke depression experienced slower recovery and were less likely to be discharged home, highlighting the need for further research in larger populations.

  • A study analyzed survival outcomes for stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who received either surgery or stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) between 2012 and 2016.
  • Of the 538 patients, those who had surgery experienced better overall survival rates (90.1% at 3 years) compared to those treated with SBRT (70.5% at 3 years), although cancer-specific survival was similar between both groups.
  • The results indicate that while surgery is associated with higher overall survival, the differences in cancer-specific survival prompt the need for further research comparing these treatments in a more controlled manner.

Background: In critically ill patients, healthy vitamin C levels are important to avoid an imbalance in reactive oxygen species. To achieve this, oxidative stress levels in emergency patients need to be accurately measured in real-time. However, normally, reactive oxygen/nitrogen species are short-lived, rendering measurement difficult; moreover, measurement of relatively stable antioxidants and other oxidative stress markers in real-time is challenging.

Graphene oxide (GO) has attracted attention as an excellent membrane material for water treatment and desalination owing to its high mechanical strength, hydrophilicity, and permeability. In this study, composite membranes were prepared by coating GO on various polymeric porous substrates (polyethersulfone, cellulose ester, and polytetrafluoroethylene) using suction filtration and casting methods. The composite membranes were used for dehumidification, that is, water vapor separation in the gas phase.

Background: Through the evolution of novel wing structures, bats (Order Chiroptera) became the only mammalian group to achieve powered flight. This achievement preceded the massive adaptive radiation of bats into diverse ecological niches. We investigate some of the developmental processes that underlie the origin and subsequent diversification of one of the novel membranes of the bat wing: the plagiopatagium, which connects the fore- and hind limb in all bat species.

Hydrogen peroxide is an environmentally friendly oxidizing agent but current synthetic methods are wasteful. This is a result of the high flammability of H/O mixtures and/or the requirement for cocatalysts. In this paper, we report the synthesis of HO by means of a homogeneous catalyst, which allows a safe, one-pot synthesis in water, using only H and O.

The acetamide moiety is a general functional group present in many natural and pharmaceutical products. Herein, we report two new reagents, p-methoxybenzyl N-acetylcarbamate potassium salt (PM-BENAC-K) and 2,4-dimethoxybenzyl N-acetylcarbamate potassium salt (2,4-DM-BENAC-K), which are refined versions of the benzyl N-acetylcarbamate potassium salt (BENAC-K). These compounds, which we reported as simple equivalents of N-acetamide nucleophiles, are stable and easy-to-handle powders that react with a variety of alkyl halides and sulfonates to afford substituted products in good yields.
