The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that countries adopt the reference level of 100 Bq m-3 for indoor radon gas. Adopting the reference level requires a preliminary assessment of the indoor radon concentration. In the preliminary investigation, a cut-off value is useful, which is a value for selecting samples that can be reliably determined to be below the reference level (in this paper, the WHO reference level) using a straightforward method.

Synthesis of kanamycin-azole hybrids and investigation of their antifungal activities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans as the critical priority fungal pathogens for which therapeutic solutions are needed. Azole-based antifungal agents, including triazoles, diazoles, and thiazoles, are widely used in the treatments for fungal infections. In light of past successes in the transformation of antibacterial kanamycin into antifungal derivatives via chemical modifications, a new library of kanamycin-azole hybrids was synthesized and tested against a panel of azole-resistant and susceptible Candida and Cryptococcus strains.

Surgical outcome and prognosis of pediatric solid-pseudopapillary neoplasm.

Background: The aim of this study was to clarify the characteristics and outcomes of pediatric patients with solid pseudopapillary neoplasms (SPNs) who underwent pancreatectomy.

Methods: Pediatric patients with SPNs who underwent pancreatectomy at our institution between 1995 and 2020 were included in the study.

Results: During the period under review, 12 patients underwent pancreatectomy for SPNs (median age: 10 years; range: 6-15 years).

Weaning is a critical period in raising pigs. Novel animal feed additives that promote gut health and regulate immune function of piglets without antibiotics are needed. In this study, we aimed to test the ability of mesobiliverdin IXα-enriched microalgae (MBV IXα-enriched microalgae) to eliminate reliance on antibiotics to promote intestinal health in piglets.

Enhanced numeracy skills following team-based learning in United States pharmacy students: a longitudinal cohort study.

Purpose: The literature suggests that the ability to numerate cannot be fully understood without accounting for the social context in which mathematical activity is represented. Team-based learning (TBL) is an andragogical approach with theoretical links to sociocultural and community-of-practice learning. This study aimed to quantitatively explore the impact of TBL instruction on numeracy development in 2 cohorts of pharmacy students and identify the impact of TBL instruction on numeracy development from a social perspective for healthcare education.

Amphiphilic aminoglycosides: Modifications that revive old natural product antibiotics.

Widely-used -derived antibacterial aminoglycosides have encountered challenges because of antibiotic resistance and toxicity. Today, they are largely relegated to medicinal topical applications. However, chemical modification to amphiphilic aminoglycosides can revive their efficacy against bacterial pathogens and expand their targets to other pathogenic microbes and disorders associated with hyperactive connexin hemichannels.

Effects of changes in skeletal muscle mass on the prognosis of pediatric malignant solid tumors.

Purpose: This study aims to clarify the relationship between changes in skeletal muscle mass during treatment and prognosis of pediatric malignant solid tumors.

Methods: Patients with pediatric malignant solid tumors who were treated at Kyushu University Hospital from 2007 to 2017 were divided into two groups: the progression-free survival (PFS) group and the relapse/death (R/D) group; the psoas major muscle volume (PMV) was then compared. We also measured the PMV and psoas muscle area (PMA) of pediatric patients with no complications who underwent surgery for acute appendicitis (control) and compared the values with those of patients with malignant tumors.

The utility of core-needle tumor biopsy for pediatric patients.

Background: Core-needle biopsy (CNB) is used less frequently for the diagnosis of tumors in pediatric patients. In this report, the utility and safety of CNB for pediatric patients are described.

Methods: The medical records of patients who underwent CNB at the Department of Pediatric Surgery, Kyushu University Hospital from April 2020 to November 2021 were retrospectively reviewed.

Mesobiliverdin IXα ameliorates osteoporosis via promoting osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells.

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression promotes osteogenesis, but the mechanisms remain unclear and therapeutic strategies using it to target bone disorders such as osteoporosis have not progressed. Mesobiliverdin IXα is a naturally occurring bilin analog of HO-1 catalytic product biliverdin IXα. Inclusion of mesobiliverdin IXα in the feed diet of ovariectomized osteoporotic mice was observed to increase femur bone volume, trabecular thickness and osteogenesis serum markers osteoprotegrin and osteocalcin and to decrease bone resorption serum markers cross-linked N-teleopeptide and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b.

Motor Imagery, Execution, and Observation Classification using Small Amount of EEG Data with Multiple Two-Class CNNs.

This study attempted to classify a small amount of electroencephalogram (EEG) data on five states: four tasks involving right index-finger flexion (kinesthetic motor imagery, visual motor imagery, motor execution, and motor observation) and resting with eyes open. We employed a convolutional neural network (CNN) as a classifier and compared the classification accuracies of two types of CNNs: 1) a "single five-class CNN," which classified the aforementioned states with a single CNN and 2) "multiple two-class CNNs," wherein ten CNNs that classify pairs of states were combined. In addition, the classification accuracies were compared between two scenarios: one wherein the EEGs from all 19 scalp probe electrodes (19-channel EEG) were adopted as input data for the CNN, and the other wherein the EEGs of four regions closely related to the motor execution and observation of the index finger (4-channel EEG) were adopted.

Endoscopic Surgical Approach for Pediatric Solid Tumors That Permits Complete Curability and Exhibits Cosmetic Advantages.

We actively use novel endoscopic surgical approaches with complete curability and good cosmetic outcomes to facilitate the removal of resected tumors from the body via a small incision. This retrospective study reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent endoscopic surgery for treating solid tumors in the abdominal, thoracic, and urogenital regions between April 2013 and March 2020. At our institution, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is performed for malignant tumors with a maximum diameter of ≤5 cm and nonmalignant tumors without diameter restrictions, although both need to have no vascular encasement.

Successful management of Wilms tumor accompanied by traumatic renal injury: a case report.

When a tumor and trauma coexist, the treatment strategy must be established while considering their interaction. We herein report a 5-month-old girl with Wilms tumor complicated by blunt renal trauma. She was involved in a traffic accident and had hemorrhagic shock due to renal bleeding.

The Student Engagement Effect of Team-Based Learning on Student Pharmacists.

To expand our understanding of student engagement by qualitatively examining how student pharmacists experienced the psychological state of engagement when applying team-based learning (TBL) pedagogy. A qualitative case study was conducted. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with a purposeful and convenience sample of student pharmacists (n=14).

This study investigates the effects of mesobiliverdin IXα (MBV)-enriched microalgae spirulina extracts on the growth performance, blood parameters, intestinal morphology, and gut microbiota of broilers.

The impact of team-based learning on the critical thinking skills of pharmacy students.

Introduction: Critical thinking is an important ability for pharmacists, but few studies have found improvements in pharmacy student critical thinking skills as a consequence of their education. Team-based learning (TBL) is an active learning strategy that encourages students to think critically to solve problems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of TBL on the critical thinking skills of pharmacy students.

[A Case of Testicular Tumor with Multiple Metastasis Leading to Complete Response after Treatment Interruption].

A 39-year-old man experiencing cranial nerve symptoms was referred to our neurosurgery department after a brain tumor was detected on computed tomography (CT) scans at a local hospital. Due to convulsive symptoms, the patient was admitted to our hospital for detailed examination. The patient was diagnosed with right testicular tumor, multiple brain metastases, multiple lung metastases and right kidney metastases, and was transferred to our urology department.

Case Presentation: An elder brother was diagnosed at the age of 30 years old and the pathological diagnosis was mixed testicular germ cell tumor.
