From 1983 to 1990, subcutaneous mastectomy with axillary dissection was carried out for 46 patients with early breast cancer including three bilateral breast cancer patients (four breasts). Cancer cells were recognized histopathologically in the resection margins of small mammary gland resting under the nipple in four cases, and the remaining 42 cases underwent a curative resection. Multicentric lesions were found out histopathologically by continuous sections in five cases (six breasts).

Two hemoglobin components are recognized in the erythrocytes of the adult Japanese quail: a major (Q-II) and a minor (Q-I) component. We have determined the amino-acid sequence of the alpha D-globin of the minor component and the beta-globin which is common to both components by conventional protein sequence analysis. The sequences of both the alpha D- and the beta-globins showed close homology with those of their counterpart constituents in other avian hemoglobins.

The strip gingival autograft technique.

Int J Periodontics Restorative Dent

September 1993

In keeping with the concept of rapid epithelialization of close wound edges, the strip technique was developed to maximize the area of gingival grafting with less trauma to the donor site or the recipient site. An incision is made and a partial-thickness flap is reflected so that stable periosteum is left. The apical mucosal border of the recipient site is sutured to the periosteum.

We have applied low temperature difference FTIR spectroscopy to investigate intermediates produced from the M intermediate upon blue light excitation (<480 nm). In agreement with an earlier report by Balashov and Litvin (1981), who studied these intermediates with low temperature visible absorption spectrophotometry, we have observed at least three stages in this backphotoreaction. The initial photoproduct is stable at 100 K, and two products of subsequent thermal reactions are observed upon raising the temperature to 130 and 160 K, respectively.

A case of pseudocoarctation with dissecting aneurysm of the ascending aorta and arch is reported. A 49-year-old man was admitted with chest pain and loss of consciousness. Angiogram showed kinking of the aortic isthmus and dissecting aneurysm of the ascending aorta.

The chemical and immunological properties of thyroglobulin (Tg) in tissue obtained from a patient co-existed with two types of thyroid tumors, i.e., functioning and non-functioning, and were compared with the properties of Tg that was isolated from adjacent peripheral tissue.

Basilar and right vertebral artery occlusion, which caused a brain stem infarction, occurred in an 11-year-old boy. There have been nine previous cases of basilar artery occlusion with steno-occlusive lesion in the vertebral artery. It is suspected that dissection of the vertebral artery at the atlantoaxial level and a gradual progression of arterial dissection to the basilar artery were the major causes of this infarction.

A 51-year-old woman with known dextrocardia presented with left-sided abdominal pain and symptoms consistent with biliary colic and cholelithiasis. Abdominal ultrasound confirmed the diagnosis of gallstones, as well as situs inversus with the liver and gallbladder on the left side and the spleen on the right. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed without incident.

Fifty cases of total hip replacement performed by one surgeon were reviewed to compare the effects of epidural and general anesthesia. The blood pressure in patients under epidural anesthesia was significantly lower (P less than 0.001; t-test).

Bacteriorhodopsin (bR) has been biosynthetically prepared with lysine deuterated at its alpha carbon (C alpha--H). The labeled membranes containing bR were investigated by difference Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. It has been derived from K/bR and M/bR difference spectra (K and M are photocycle intermediates) that several bands previously assigned to the retinal chromophore are coupled to the C alpha--H.

Epidemiological data indicate that breast feeding is the primary route of mother-to-child transmission of HTLV-I. However, serological studies show that 60 to 90% of infants who are fed breast milk from HTLV-I carriers avoid HTLV-I infection. To understand the mechanism of the virus transmission, the titer of HTLV-I antibodies and p40tax antibody and the copy number of the HTLV-I proviral DNA in peripheral lymphocytes in the HTLV-I carrier-mothers were surveyed.

Films of oriented bacteriorhodopsin have been formed in polyvinyl alcohol with excellent optical quality. Images with high contrast have been impressed and erased on these films. Second-harmonic microscopy has been used to read the image on a bacteriorhodopsin-polyvinyl alcohol film without erasure.

A 68-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of shock. CT scan revealed ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) with isolated left-sided inferior vena cava (L-IVC). After emergent laparotomy, maintaining blood pressure stable, we clamped the aorta at the level of the supra-celiac region.

The careful selection of the "graftable" case and the attention to details in the surgical technique increase the predictability of results in reconstructive periodontal therapy. When choosing a surgical technique for reconstructive periodontal therapy, the clinician must carefully consider the following: 1. Flap and incision design to best avoid exposure and contamination of the graft material.

Large doses of aspirin (200 mg/kg or 400 mg/kg, s.c) caused marked hypocalcemia in suckling rats, two hours after administration. The hypocalcemic effect was more evident in two week old rats than in one week old ones.

The sign of the optoelectrical response of bacteriorhodopsin is highlighted as a means to emulate excitation and inhibition in neural computation. A classic example of a neural computation that is based on such excitation and inhibition is chosen to highlight the unique applicability of bacteriorhodopsin in highly parallel computational schemes. The classic example chosen is that of the ganglion receptive field, which is a fundamental element in retinal edge detection.
