Invasive cribriform carcinoma of the breast detected incidentally on computed tomography: A case report.

Invasive cribriform carcinoma is a rare type of invasive breast carcinoma, and a few cases have been reported. Its features are a cribriform pattern resembling the histological structures of cribriform ductal carcinoma in situ and an excellent prognosis. However, the extent of progress for intraductal extension must be carefully evaluated.

Successful Pre-Operative Local Control of Skin Invasion of Breast Cancer Using a Combination of Systemic Chemotherapy and Mohs Paste.

Locally advanced breast cancer (tumor > 5 cm, widespread infiltration of the skin and muscle, or metastases to lymph nodes) is difficult to resect by surgery, and even when it is resectable, there is a high probability of local recurrence and distant metastasis. Therefore, systemic therapy should be administered first. However, as cutaneous infiltration progresses, the patient's quality of life is impaired by pain, bleeding, presence of exudates, and a foul-smelling odor.

iTriangular Stapling Technique: A Novel Reconstruction Method and Clinical Outcomes of Cervical Esophagogastric Anastomosis after Esophagectomy.

Background: We herein report the feasibility and safety of cervical end-to-end anastomosis by the iTriangular stapling technique (iTST), which was developed as an extension of the triangular stapling technique (TST) after minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE).

Methods: A total of 45 patients with thoracic esophageal cancer who underwent reconstruction with cervical esophagogastric anastomosis by iTST using a linear stapler after MIE between January 2016 and January 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. We modified and improved upon the TST by adding a 1- to 2-cm vertical incision on the anterior wall of the remnant esophageal stump to enlarge the anastomotic lumen and thereby reduce the risk of anastomotic stenosis.

[A Case Report of Multiple Intussusceptions by Intestinal Metastases of Pleomorphic Carcinoma of the Lung].

A 68-year-old male with abdominal pain and vomiting was brought to our hospital by ambulance. Computed tomography showed multiple intussusceptions with pseudokidney signs in the jejunum and ileocecum, and a tumor of 5 cm in diameter in the left lower lobe of the lung. We performed an emergent operation, as a release of multiple intussusceptions was difficult by conservative treatment.

The prognostic significance of the expression of monocarboxylate transporter 4 in patients with right- or left-sided colorectal cancer.

Aim: Monocarboxylate transporter 4 (MCT4) is a proton pump that exchanges lactate through the plasma membrane. The present study investigated the clinical significance of the expression of MCT4 in patients with right- or left-sided colorectal cancer (CRC).

Methods: Surgical specimens from 237 CRC patients were immunohistochemically stained with polyclonal anti-MCT4 antibodies.

[A Case of Carcinoma Showing Thymus-Like Differentiation (CASTLE) of the Thyroid].

The case presented herein was a 70-year-old woman who had no compliant, but had a mass in the lower part of the right lobe of the thyroid detected by ultrasound (US). The US image of the tumor, measuring 13 mm in diameter, showed a low and heterogeneous internal echo level with calcification and an irregular margin. The tumor appeared to extend to the adjacent sternothyroid muscle, and cervical lymph node swelling was detected in a computer tomography (CT) image, but no metastatic lesion was found by positron emission tomography (PET)-CT.

Clinical performance metrics of 3D stereoscopic digital mammography compared with 2D digital mammography: observer study.

Objective: To assess the clinical performance of three-dimensional stereoscopic digital mammography (3DsDM) compared with two-dimensional digital mammography (2DDM) for breast lesion diagnosis with jackknife free-response receiver operating characteristics (JAFROC) observer study.

Methods: 40 pairs of standard-dose 2DDM and their 3DsDM images were used for an observer performance study. A total of 18 lesions were identified as the reference standard of actionable breast lesions (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System Category 3 or more) by two breast radiologists.

[A Case of Matrix-Producing Carcinoma of the Breast].

A 61-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of a right breast mass. A 19 mm hard mass was palpable in the A area of the right breast. A contrast-enhanced MRI showed rim enhancement at the peripheral region of the tumor, which was thought to represent the carcinoma component mainly at the periphery and the matrix component inside the tumor.

Evaluation of the R2* value in invasive ductal carcinoma with respect to hypoxic-related prognostic factors using iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and least-squares emission (IDEAL).

Objective: To correlate the R2* value obtained by iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and least-squares emission (IDEAL) with fibrotic focus (FF), microvessel density and hypoxic biomarker (HIF-1α) in breast carcinoma.

Methods: Forty-two patients who were diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) of the breast underwent breast MRI including IDEAL before surgery. The entire region of interest (ROI) was delineated on the R2* map, and average tumour R2* value was calculated for each ROI.

Use of the continuous suture technique in dunking pancreatojejunostomy without stenting.

Purpose: To evaluate the newly developed continuous suture technique in dunking pancreatojejunostomy without pancreatic duct stenting after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD).

Methods: Thirty-four consecutive pancreaticojejunostomies (patient age 73 ± 11, 41-88) with continuous sutures without stenting after PD were performed from 2006 to 2011. This study evaluated the operation time, intraoperative blood loss, initial postoperative day of oral feeding, postoperative hospital stay, postoperative early complications, and late complications.

Efficacy of micafungin in empirical therapy of deep mycosis in surgically ill patients.

Micafungin (MCFG), an echinocandin antifungal agent, exhibits antifungal activity against Candida albicans and non-albicans Candida. The fungicidal activity of MCFG against clinical isolates of Candida species was investigated, and the clinical efficacy of MCFG in therapy of deep mycosis in surgery was studied using the AKOTT algorithm. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum fungicidal concentration values of fluconazole were ≤0.

Rectal Carcinoma with Heterotopic Bone: Report of a Case.

Heterotopic bone is rarely present in malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. We herein report a case of rectal adenocarcinoma with heterotopic bone. A 46-year-old Japanese male presented to our hospital with abdominal distension and constipation.

[A case of low grade ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast with difficulties in making the preoperative diagnosis after detection by FDG-PET].

A 56-year-old woman underwent FDG-PET screening, which demonstrated delayed-phase uptake in the lower part of the left breast. The findings of mammography, ultrasonography, MRI and cytological examination were compatible with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), but core needle biopsy showed no evidence of malignancy. Therefore, partial resection of the left breast with sentinel lymph node biopsy was performed to make a definite diagnosis.

Background: 4-[3,5-Bis (trimethylsilyl) benzamido] benzoic acid (TAC-101) is a novel retinobenzoic acid derivative which has a specific binding affinity to the retinoic acid receptors (RAR)alpha and RARbeta. Using time-dependent FACScan analysis, it was observed that TAC-101 induced apoptosis in a DLD-1 human colon cancer cell line. In this study, the induction of apoptosis-related proteins and the activities of caspases in a DLD-1 cell line under medication with TAC-101 were investigated.

Significance of lymphangiogenesis as assessed by immunohistochemistry for podoplanin in patients with esophageal carcinoma.

Background: Although lymph node involvement is an important prognostic factor for survival in patients with esophageal carcinoma, little is known about lymphangiogenesis in esophageal carcinoma. Podoplanin, a mutin-type transmembrane glycoprotein, specifically recognizes the lymphatic endothelium and is used as a lymphatic-specific marker. Anti-human podoplanin antibody was therefore used to quantify and evaluate the lymphangiogenesis in esophageal carcinoma.

Lymphatic microvessel density is an independent prognostic factor in colorectal cancer.

Purpose: Although lymph node metastasis via lymphatic vessels often is related with an adverse outcome, it is not well known whether lymphatic spread to lymph node needs the development of the new lymphatic formation. In addition, the correlation between lymphangiogenesis and prognosis has not been well documented. This study was designed to assess the prognostic value of lymphangiogenesis and lymphatic vessel invasion in colorectal cancer.

Correlation between the urinary dihydrouracil-uracil ratio and the 5-FU plasma concentration in patients treated with oral 5-FU analogs.

Background: The determination of dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) deficiency is important in avoiding severe 5-fluorouracil (FU) toxicity. The dihydrouracil (UH2)-uracil (Ura) ratio (UH2/Ura) in plasma might be an important indicator of the risk of 5-FU catabolic deficiency. In order to clarify this possibility, the pyrimidine metabolites and the UH2/Ura were measured in urine and the plasma level of 5-FU was evaluated in patients with gastric and colorectal cancer.

Aged garlic extract has chemopreventative effects on 1,2-dimethylhydrazine-induced colon tumors in rats.

Garlic has been reported to have chemopreventive effects against a variety of cancers. However, different garlic preparations contain different constituents. We investigated the chemopreventive effect of aged garlic extract (AGE), an odorless product from prolonged extraction of fresh garlic, on colon carcinogenesis and cell proliferation in 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH)-induced colon neoplastic rats.

Expression levels of thymidine phosphorylase (TP) and dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) in patients with gastrointestinal cancer.

Background: Thymidine phosphorylase (TP) is a key enzyme involved in pyrimidine nucleoside metabolism. Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) is the major catabolic enzyme of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). These are important enzymes in the pyrimidine salvage pathway and are considered to be key enzymes for determining the prognosis of patients with gastrointestinal cancer.

Relationship between interleukin-12-expressing cells and antigen-presenting cells in patients with colorectal cancer.

Background: Interleukin-12 (IL-12) is a powerful cytokine that plays an important role in cell-mediated immunity. Although IL-12 is produced by antigen-presenting cells (APCs), the relationship between IL-12 expression and APCs in colorectal cancer tissue remains unknown.

Patients And Methods: Immunohistochemical detection of APCs and IL-12 was performed in 22 colorectal cancer specimens.

Background: 4-[3,5-Bis (trimethylsilyl) benzamido] benzoic acid (TAC-101) is a novel retinobenzoic acid derivative, which has a specific binding affinity to the retinoic acid receptors (RAR)-alpha and -beta. Apoptotic induction by TAC-101 was investigated using a rat hepatic metastatic model of rat RCN-9 colon cancer cells in vivo and FACScan analysis with the DLD-1 human colon cancer cell line in vitro.

Materials And Methods: Hepatic metastatic tumors were induced using intra-portal injection of RCN-9 cells into F344 rats in vivo.

Relationships between local and systemic expression of interleukin-12 and plasma levels of vascular endothelial growth factor in patients with gastric cancer.

Background: Interleukin 12 (IL-12) is a heterodimeric cytokine that exhibits potent anti-tumor and anti-metastatic activities. Very few studies have investigated the expression of IL-12 in patients with gastric cancer. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression and serum levels of IL-12, and plasma levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in patients with gastric cancer.
