Bulk macroautophagy/autophagy, typically induced by starvation, is generally thought to isolate cytosolic components for degradation in a non-selective manner. Despite the fundamental nature of the eukaryotic degradation pathway, the question of what cargo is isolated by autophagy has remained unaddressed for over 30 years. We recently employed mass spectrometry to analyze the contents of isolated autophagic bodies.

Feelings and thoughts about life selection in pregnant women undergoing non-invasive prenatal testing in Japan.

The objective of this study was to conduct qualitative research by clarifying the thoughts of pregnant women undergoing non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) in Japan, to collect evidence to provide information and psychosocial support in genetic counseling (GC). We attempted to conduct qualitative research to provide support for GC and the society in relation to children with special needs, by clarifying the thoughts of pregnant women undergoing NIPT. Between January 2016 and December 2017, we administered an open-ended questionnaire to pregnant Japanese women undergoing NIPT to clarify their ethical views in relation to children with special needs.

Goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix: Six case reports.

Background: Goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) of the appendix is a rare tumor characterized by neuroendocrine and adenocarcinoma features. Accurate preoperative diagnosis is very difficult, with most patients complaining mainly of abdominal pain. Computed tomography shows swelling of the appendix, so diagnosis is usually made incidentally after appendectomy based on a preoperative diagnosis of appendicitis.

We find that cells accumulate glycogen in the cytoplasm during nitrogen starvation and that this carbohydrate is rarely observed within autophagosomes and autophagic bodies.

[A Case of Surgery for Skin Metastasis of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma in a Very Elderly Patient to Improve the Quality of Life].

The patient was a 100-year-old woman who underwent right lobe thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid cancer in another hospital around 1990. Patients And Methods: This prospective observational study recruited patients aged ≥40 years with regular clinic visits to Sanmu Medical Center during October 2019. In this study, we performed a cross-sectional study that investigated the changes of water intake and water output in healthy Japanese young and elderly people and handicapped adults. Identification of amino acid residues important for recognition of O-phospho-l-serine substrates by cysteine synthase.

Pyridoxal-5'-phosphate-dependent cysteine synthases synthesize l-cysteine from their primary substrates, O-acetyl-l-serine (OAS) and O-phospho-l-serine (OPS), and their secondary substrate, sulfide. The mechanism by which cysteine synthases recognize OPS remains unclear; hence, we investigated the OPS recognition mechanism of the OPS sulfhydrylase obtained from Aeropyrum pernix K1 (ApOPSS) and the OAS sulfhydrylase-B obtained from Escherichia coli (EcOASS-B), using protein engineering methods. From the amino acid sequence alignment data, we found that some OPS sulfhydrylases (OPSSs) had a Tyr corresponding to the Phe225 and Phe141 residues in ApOPSS and EcOASS-B, respectively, and that the Tyr residue could facilitate OPS recognition.

Phosphatemic Index Is a Novel Evaluation Tool for Dietary Phosphorus Load: A Whole-Foods Approach.

Objective: Dietary phosphorus (P) restriction is crucial to treat hyperphosphatemia and reduce cardiovascular disease risk and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the wider population. Various methods for dietary P restriction exist, but the bioavailability of P in food should also be considered when making appropriate food choices to maintain patients' quality of life. Here, we propose the "Phosphatemic Index" (PI) as a novel tool for evaluating dietary P load based on P bioavailability; we also evaluated the effect of continuous intake of different PI foods in mixed meals on serum intact fibroblast growth factor 23 concentration.

Objective: To verify the prison population's knowledge of sexually transmitted infections.

Methods: An illustrated questionnaire was prepared based on the Ministry of Health's information booklet to provide information about sexually transmitted infections and applied to a sample of the prison population (PP) (n=158). This is a descriptive and cross-sectional research conducted in 2017 in one of the penitentiaries in the western region of the state of São Paulo.
