Background: Goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) of the appendix is a rare tumor characterized by neuroendocrine and adenocarcinoma features. Accurate preoperative diagnosis is very difficult, with most patients complaining mainly of abdominal pain. The mechanisms governing autophagy of proteins and organelles have been well studied, but how other cytoplasmic components such as RNA and polysaccharides are degraded remains largely unknown. In this study, we examine autophagy of glycogen, a storage form of glucose. We find that cells accumulate glycogen in the cytoplasm during nitrogen starvation and that this carbohydrate is rarely observed within autophagosomes and autophagic bodies.

Pyridoxal-5'-phosphate-dependent cysteine synthases synthesize l-cysteine from their primary substrates, O-acetyl-l-serine (OAS) and O-phospho-l-serine (OPS), and their secondary substrate, sulfide. The mechanism by which cysteine synthases recognize OPS remains unclear; hence, we investigated the OPS recognition mechanism of the OPS sulfhydrylase obtained from Aeropyrum pernix K1 (ApOPSS) and the OAS sulfhydrylase-B obtained from Escherichia coli (EcOASS-B), using protein engineering methods. From the amino acid sequence alignment data, we found that some OPS sulfhydrylases (OPSSs) had a Tyr corresponding to the Phe225 and Phe141 residues in ApOPSS and EcOASS-B, respectively, and that the Tyr residue could facilitate OPS recognition.

Objective: Dietary phosphorus (P) restriction is crucial to treat hyperphosphatemia and reduce cardiovascular disease risk and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the wider population. Various methods for dietary P restriction exist, but the bioavailability of P in food should also be considered when making appropriate food choices to maintain patients' quality of life. Here, we propose the "Phosphatemic Index" (PI) as a novel tool for evaluating dietary P load based on P bioavailability; we also evaluated the effect of continuous intake of different PI foods in mixed meals on serum intact fibroblast growth factor 23 concentration.
