The most severe effects of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure during child development are thought to result from exposure during fetal life and childhood. However, comparing the neurodevelopmental effects of prenatal and postnatal MeHg exposure (PreMeHg and PostMeHg, respectively) remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the associations between neurodevelopmental indicators and PreMeHg or PostMeHg.

Although the organization of the brain is a subject of interest, the process of development of global cortical networks in early infancy has not yet been clarified. In the present study, we explored developmental changes in these networks from several days to 6 months after birth by examining spontaneous fluctuations in brain activity, using multichannel near-infrared spectroscopy.

As potential standards, the F344 inbred strain and an outbred stock of Long Evans were tested with three other inbred strains. To evaluate the influence of rearing conditions on phenotype stability, one group of F344s was born at the University of Tsukuba, another, bred elsewhere and delivered to Tsukuba at 4 weeks of age.

It has been suggested that both biological and genetic factors influence impulsive/self-control choice in this paradigm. In the present study, the inbred strains of BALB/c, C57BL/6, and DBA/2 mice were given a choice to press one of two levers in an operant chamber.
