Observation of edge bound states in the continuum at truncated silicon pillar photonic crystal.

Bound states in the continuum are optical modes with extremely high-quality factors and narrow resonances, which exist in the dispersion spectrum of the radiative region above the light line. A unique bound state in the continuum is supported at the edge of truncated photonic crystals, which is a type of a Fabry-Pérot type bound state in the continuum, but has never been observed in experiments. Here, we demonstrate the bound states in the continuum supported at the edge array of silicon (Si) pillars whose diameter is bigger than that of the rest of a Si-pillar two-dimensional photonic crystal.

20π-Electron Antiaromatic Benziphthalocyanines with Absorption Reaching the Near-Infrared-II Region.

Although second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1500 nm) light has attracted considerable attention, especially for life sciences applications, the development of organic dyes with NIR-II absorption remains a formidable challenge. Herein we report the design, synthesis, and electronic properties of 20π-electron antiaromatic benziphthalocyanines (BPcs) that exhibit intense absorption bands in the NIR region. The strong, low-energy absorption of the antiaromatic BPcs is attributed to electric-dipole-allowed HOMO-LUMO transitions with narrow band gaps, enabled by the reduced structural symmetry of BPc compared with regular porphyrins and phthalocyanines.

[A Case of Acute Circulatory Failure Due to Carbon Dioxide Embolization during Laparoscopic Hepatectomy].

A 78-year-old man who was diagnosed as having hepatocellular carcinoma(segment 4/8)underwent laparoscopic hepatectomy. About 5 hours after the start of the operation, SpO2 and systolic blood pressure suddenly dropped to 87% and 40 mmHg. EtCO2 level decreased to 8 mmHg and PaCO2 was 48.

[A Case of the Metastatic Colonic Carcinoma from an Endometrial Carcinoma].

A woman in her 80s, had undergone radical surgery for an endometrial carcinoma 9 years earlier, and her 5-year postoperative follow-up had been completed without recurrence. She consulted an orthopedic surgeon with a chief complaint of a mass in the left inguinal region, and was referred to surgery after MRI scan revealed lymph node metastases in the left inguinal and external iliac region and a sigmoid colon tumor. Due to postoperative adhesion of the uterine cancer, the colonoscope could not be inserted to the tumor, and no tissue diagnosis was made.

[A Case of the Rectal Cancer with Metastatic Skin Cancer after Inguinal Hernia Surgery].

A woman in her 90s underwent laparoscopic hernia repair for a recurrent left inguinal hernia with abdominal wall defect 2 years ago. She came to our department with a complaint of a mass in the hernia wound, which was suspected to be a skin cancer, and the pathology diagnosis was adenocarcinoma. A colonoscopy was performed and she was diagnosed with sigmoid rectal cancer with only skin metastasis and the operation was performed.

[A Case of Long-Term Survival with Metachronous Hepatic and Pulmonary Metastases from Transverse Colon Cancer by Multidisciplinary Treatment].

A 64-year-old woman underwent right hemicolectomy for transverse colon cancer. Histopathological findings revealed T, type 2, 24×22 mm, tub2, pT2N1a(1/23)M0, and pStage Ⅲa. Postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy was not administered at the patient's request.

[A Case of Recurrent Rectal Cancer with Acute Lower Extremity Arterial Occlusion during Treatment with Bevacizumab].

The patient was 40s male, who underwent laparoscopic low anterior resection for his upper rectal cancer with final pathology results of tub2, pT3(SS), no lymph metastasis and fStage Ⅱ. He was followed up without adjuvant chemotherapy. Half a year after surgery, tumor marker was elevated and CT scan revealed multiple liver metastases.

[A Case of cStage Ⅳ Remnant Gastric Cancer after Proximal Gastrectomy with Double Tract Reconstruction Treated with Conversion Surgery].

Our patient was a man in his 70s who underwent proximal gastrectomy with double tract reconstruction in 2013. He was diagnosed with cStage Ⅳ unresectable remnant gastric cancer with paraaortic lymph node metastases in 2021. He was treated with 5 courses of S-1 plus oxaliplatin therapy.

[A Case of Wernicke Encephalopathy with Ileus by Small Intestinal Cancer].

The patient was a 74 year-old woman. She came to the hospital with the chief complaint of vomiting, difficulty walking, and disorientation. The MRI study showed increased FLAIR and DWI signals in the bilateral medial thalamus.

[Disseminated Bone Marrow Carcinomatosis from Colon Cancer-A Case Report].

A 77‒year‒old man came to our hospital with complaints of abdominal pain and difficulty to defecate. Abdominal CT scan showed an abnormal region in the ascending colon, which was suspected to be an ascending colon cancer. D‒dimer was remarkably high, and the platelet count was 63,000/μL; these results suggested disseminated intravascular coagulation caused by tumor activation.

[Resection of a Desmoid Tumor Originated from Greater Omentum with No History of Open Surgery].

Here we report a case of a 41-year-old male patient who underwent resection of a desmoid tumor originating from the greater omentum with no history of open surgery. An elastic hard mass was palpated in the left upper abdomen, but there were no abnormalities on serum chemical tests, including tumor markers. Computed tomography showed a parenchymal tumor located near the descending colon.

Multicenter prospective trial of total gastrectomy versus proximal gastrectomy for upper third cT1 gastric cancer.

Background: The appropriate surgical procedure for patients with upper third early gastric cancer is controversial. We compared total gastrectomy (TG) with proximal gastrectomy (PG) in this patient population.

Methods: A multicenter, non-randomized trial was conducted, with patients treated with PG or TG.

Hyperbolic surface waves on anisotropic materials without hyperbolic dispersion.

We theoretically analyze directional surface electromagnetic waves supported at an interface between an isotropic medium and anisotropic metal with effective uniaxial negative permittivity. We identify two types of surface wave solutions, resulting in unique hyperbolic dispersion in the wavevector space. Such anisotropic metal can be realized by alternating dielectric and metallic layers with deep subwavelength thicknesses or metallic nanowires in dielectric host.

Hydrogen gas sensing using aluminum doped ZnO metasurfaces.

Hydrogen (H) sensing is crucial in a wide variety of areas, such as industrial, environmental, energy and biomedical applications. However, engineering a practical, reliable, fast, sensitive and cost-effective hydrogen sensor is a persistent challenge. Here we demonstrate hydrogen sensing using aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) metasurfaces based on optical read-out.

A 58-year-old woman underwent surgery and systemic chemotherapy(FOLFIRI plus panitumumab)for ascending colon cancer with multiple lymph node and liver metastases; the preoperative Virchow lymph node aspiration cytology showed adenocarcinoma.After 4 courses of chemotherapy, contrast-enhanced CT showed an embolus in the left subclavian vein.An anticoagulation therapy was started, but the embolus tended to increase.

[A Case of Nephrotic Syndrome Induced by FOLFIRI plus Ramucirumab for Metastatic Descending Colon Cancer].

We report a case of multiple lung metastases of RAS mutant type descending colon cancer with development of nephrotic syndrome after the introduction of FOLFIRI plus ramucirumab(RAM). A female patient in her 50s underwent adjuvant chemotherapy with capecitabine and oxaliplatin after primary tumor and partial lung resection. For recurrent multiple lung metastases, 4 years of capecitabine and bevacizumab therapy was administered.

Investigation of effective media applicability for ultrathin multilayer structures.

Multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) are highly anisotropic media consisting of alternating metal and dielectric layers with their electromagnetic properties defined by the effective medium approximation (EMA). EMA is generally applied for a large number of subwavelength unit cells or periods of a multilayer HMM. However, in practice, the number of periods is limited.

[A Case of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome Induced by Chemotherapy for Metastatic Colon Cancer].

A 78-year-old woman had a semicircular ulcerative lesion of AV 7 cm, as detected using colonoscopy, and pathologic examination based on a biopsy showed well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. On contrast-enhanced CT of the liver, a number of nodular lesions that seemed to be liver metastases were observed. It was decided to administer chemotherapy containing mFOLFOX6 plus panitumumab.

[A Case of Extended Mediastinal and Retroperitoneal Emphysema after Transanal Local Excision of an Early Lower Rectal Adenocarcinoma].

We observed a case of a large collection of mediastinal and retroperitoneal emphysema, which developed after a transanal local excision for an early lower rectal carcinoma and was treated conservatively. An 80's female patient presented with a chief complaint of bowel difficulty, which was diagnosed as mucosal prolapse syndrome with anal sphincter dysfunction. Endoscopic colonoscopy showed full circumferential proliferation of the mucosal membrane including a semicircular protruding lesion, on the upper side of the dentate line.

[A Case of an Elderly with Locoregional Recurrence of ER-Negative HER2-Positive Breast Cancer Successfully Treated with Local Therapy].

An 80-year-old woman who received on anticoagulant therapy for atrial fibrillation was diagnosed with ER-negative HER2-positive breast cancer(cT4bcN1M0, Stage ⅢB). She underwent mastectomy with skin graft and lymphadenectomy, but was evaluated to be too old for standard chemotherapy and HER2-directed therapy. Four months after the operation, she was diagnosed with regional lymph node metastasis and underwent radiotherapy.
