Photoluminescence glass dosemeters (PLDs) and thermoluminescence dosemeters (TLDs) are commonly used as a personal monitoring dosemeter. PLDs and TLDs were used for surface dose monitoring of medical staff involved in (125)I brachytherapy for prostate cancer because these dosemeters have a wide dose-response linearity and high sensitivity for low photon energy. Surface doses measured with PLDs agreed with those with TLDs within ∼20 % except for a few cases.

Reliable mass spectrometry data from large water clusters Y(-)(H(2)O)(n) with various negative core ions Y(-) such as O(2)(-), HO(-), HO(2)(-), NO(2)(-), NO(3)(-), NO(3)(-)(HNO(3))(2), CO(3)(-) and HCO(4)(-) have been obtained using atmospheric pressure negative corona discharge mass spectrometry. All the core Y(-) ions observed were ionic species that play a central role in tropospheric ion chemistry. These mass spectra exhibited discontinuities in ion peak intensity at certain size clusters Y(-)(H(2)O)(m) indicating specific thermochemical stability.

MafG and p45 possess basic region-leucine zipper (bZip) domains and form a heterodimer called NF-E2, a key regulator of megakaryopoiesis. NF-E2 binds to the Maf recognition element (MARE) and activates transcription of many platelet genes. Since the bZip domain, which mediates DNA binding and heterodimerization, is the only functional domain established for MafG, it has been assumed that MafG is required only for p45 binding to MARE and to facilitate p45-mediated transcriptional activation.

We performed proteomic analysis of plasma proteins in Japanese semisuper centenarians (SSCs) (>105 years) and young controls (20-39 years), and found that 18 protein spots were altered in the plasma of SSCs. From peptide mass fingerprinting following in-gel digestion, it was demonstrated that paraoxonase/arylesterase 1 (PON 1) and apolipoprotein E were decreased, while haptoglobin β-chain, α(1)-microglobulin, and clusterin precursor were increased in SSCs. Interestingly, proteins related to oxidative stress, PON1, haptoglobin, α(1)-microglobulin, and clusterin, were altered in SSCs.

Although conventional N-Cα bond cleavage in electron capture dissociation (ECD) of multiply-charged peptides generates a complementary c' and z(·) fragment pair, the N-Cα cleavage followed by hydrogen transfer from c' to z(·) fragments produces other fragments, namely c(·) and z'. In this study, the influence of charge state and amino acid composition on hydrogen transfer in ECD is described using sets of peptides. Hydrogen transferred ionic species such as c(·) and z' were observed in ECD spectra of doubly-protonated peptides, while the triply-protonated form did not demonstrate hydrogen transfer.

Pressure ulcers (PUs) are chronic wounds that occur as areas of tissue necrosis that results from external physical compression, shear forces, and friction. Recently, the efficacy of polyvinylidene film dressing (PVFD) for PUs without any agents promoting wound healing has been reported, suggesting that PUs have their own mechanism of spontaneous healing achieved by vascularization, synthesis of extracellular matrix, and re-epithelization. Since vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) 165 and fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2) are released at traumatic or surgical wound sites and play major roles in vascularization and wound healing, we measured the concentrations of VEGF165 and FGF-2 in the exudate and fibrinous sloughs of PUs after PVFD.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors have clinically been widely used as anti-hypertensive agents. In the present study, we compared the effects of a centrally active ACE inhibitor, perindopril, with those of non-centrally active ACE inhibitors, imidapril and enalapril, on cognitive performance in amyloid beta(Abeta) (25-35)-injected mice, a rodent model of Alzheimer's disease. We also determined the brain ACE activity in order to elucidate the relationship between the cognitive function and ACE inhibition in the brain.

Introduction: We present the case of a pregnant woman who underwent linear accelerator (LINAC)-based stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and we discuss the fetal exposure to radiation.

Clinical Presentation: A 20-year-old woman at 18 weeks of gestation presented with right cerebral hemorrhage and underwent urgent evacuation of the hematoma. The use of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) as a new matrix for in-source decay (ISD) of peptides including mono- and di-phosphorylated peptides in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS) is described. The use of 5-ASA in MALDI-ISD has been evaluated from several standpoints: hydrogen-donating ability, the outstanding sharpness of molecular and fragment ion peaks, and the presence of interference peaks such as metastable peaks and multiply charged ions. The hydrogen-donating ability of several matrices such as alpha-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid (CHCA), 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,5-DHB), 1,5-diaminonaphthalene (1,5-DAN), sinapinic acid (SA), and 5-ASA was evaluated by using the peak abundance of a reduction product [M + 2H + H](+) to that of non-reduced protonated molecule [M + H](+) of the cyclic peptide vasopressin which contains a disulfide bond (S-S).
