Hypertension is one of the greatest risk factors for cardiovascular disease, but its contribution to cardiovascular mortality weakens with aging. We have previously demonstrated that at the age of 80, higher systolic blood pressure (SBP) is not correlated with increased mortality in Japan. However, we did not examine in detail whether diastolic blood pressure (DBP) independently affects mortality.

Objective: Postprandial hyperlipidemia and insulin resistance play roles in the development of atherosclerosis in metabolic syndrome (MetS); however, the clinical significance of postprandial hemodynamic variables in this condition is still in question. The aim of this study was to investigate hemodynamic and metabolic indicators related to MetS after a mixed meal (Calorie mate, 500 kcal).

Methods: Of 107 participants undergoing this investigation, 24 fulfilled ATPIII criteria for MetS.

Background: In patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), the presence of sleep-disordered breathing, including either obstructive sleep apnea or Cheyne-Stokes respiration-central sleep apnea, is associated with a poor prognosis. A large-scale clinical trial showed that continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) did not improve the prognosis of such patients with CHF, probably because of insufficient sleep-disordered breathing suppression. Recently, it was reported that adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV) can effectively treat sleep-disordered breathing.

Background: Increased salt intake may induce hypertension, lead to cardiac hypertrophy, and exacerbate heart failure. When elderly patients develop heart failure, diastolic dysfunction is often observed, although the ejection fraction has decreased. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an established risk factor for heart failure.

An 82-year-old male patient, who had been diagnosed with chronic heart failure due to dilated cardiomyopathy and combined valvular disease and who had atrial fibrillation with complete atrioventricular block, was admitted to our hospital owing to the exacerbation of chronic heart failure. During admission, the patient became aware of drowsiness during daytime hours and had periodic apnea during sleep. Polysomnography (PSG) revealed Cheyne-Stokes respiration with severe central sleep apnea as evidenced by an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of 93.

We measured the ultrasonic vibration current of aqueous solution of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) as a function of surfactant concentration at 298.15 K under atmospheric pressure. The dependence of vibration current on the surfactant concentration exhibited a break point around the critical micelle concentration (CMC) in the DTAB system, whereas no break point was observed in the DTAC system.

Although the number of sound or decayed teeth has been reported to be associated with cognitive function in elderly populations with dementia, little is known about this association in elderly populations without dementia. We evaluated this relationship, with adjustment for confounding factors, in Japanese populations of 60-year-old (n = 270; 120 males and 150 females) and 65-year-old (n = 123; 57 males and 66 females) individuals residing in Fukuoka Prefecture of Japan. Dental examinations were performed in all subjects, along with the Mini-mental state examination (MMSE) for assessing cognitive function.

The stability of native and enzyme-treated human red blood cells of type A (Rh D positive) against agglutination is investigated under conditions where it is mediated by immunoglobuline G (IgG) anti-D antibody binding. The propensity of cells to agglutinate is related to their interphasic (electrokinetic) properties. These properties significantly depend on the concentration of proteolytic papain enzyme and protease-free neuraminidase enzyme that the cells are exposed to.

Aim: Helicobacter pylori (HP) has been implicated as a risk factor for cardiovascular and atherosclerotic diseases. Arterial stiffness determined by pulse wave velocity (PWV) or the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) has been shown to be higher in HP-positive subjects than in HP-negative subjects; however, this result has been observed only in young subjects. The aim of the study was to investigate the possible correlation between HP infection and PWV or CAVI in middle-aged subjects.

We have studied the valence redistribution of V in LaAlO(3)/LaVO(3)/LaAlO(3) trilayers, which are composed of only polar layers grown on SrTiO3 (001) substrates, by core-level photoemission spectroscopy. We have found that the V valence is intermediate between V3+ and V4+ for thin LaAlO3 cap layers, decreases with increasing cap-layer thickness, and finally recovers the bulk value of V3+ at approximately 10 unit-cell thickness. In order to interpret these results, we propose that the atomic reconstruction of the polar LaAlO3 surface competes with the purely electronic V valence change so that the polar catastrophe is avoided at the cost of minimum energy.

Background: Low serum selenium concentration has been associated with increased risk of prostate cancer. A possible mechanism is through the antioxidant activity of selenoenzymes. However, the effect of selenium intake on selenoenzymes at target tissues is not well established.

We examined the zero-field splitting of an iron(II) phthalocyanine (FePc) attached to clean and oxidized Cu(110) surfaces and the dependence on an applied magnetic field by inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy with STM. The symmetry of the ligand field surrounding the Fe atom is lowered on the oxidized surface, switching the magnetic anisotropy from the easy plane of the bulk to the easy axis. The zero-field splitting was not observed for FePc on a clean Cu(110) surface, and the spin state converts from triplet to singlet due to the strong coupling of Fe d states with the Cu substrate, as is also confirmed by photoelectron spectroscopy.

An expression for the surface tension of an aqueous mixed solution of surfactants and electrolyte ions in the presence of the common ions was derived from the Helmholtz free energy of an air/water surface. By applying the equation to experimental data for the surface tension, the adsorption constant of surfactant ions onto the air/water interface, the binding constant of counterions on the surfactants, and the surface potential and surface charge density of the interface were estimated. The adsorption constant and binding constant were dependent on the species of surfactant ion and counterion, respectively.

Since little is known about the very elderly population aged 80 years and older, we evaluated the association of quality of life (QoL) in an 85-year-old population with physical fitness measurements assessed at age 80 and 85 years. Two hundred seven individuals (90 males, 117 females) aged 85 years underwent the Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaires for QoL assessment and physical fitness measurements (handgrip strength, leg-extensor strength, one-leg standing time, stepping rate of legs, walking speed). In 85-year-olds, significant associations were found, by multiple regression analysis or logistic regression analysis, with adjustment for various influencing factors in QoL assessed by SF-36 with physical fitness measurements examined at the age of 85 and 80 years.

FLP, like Cre, is a frequently employed site-specific recombinase. Because wild-type FLP (wtFLP) is thermolabile, a thermostable FLP mutant (FLPe) has been developed for efficient recombination of FLP in studies using mammalian cells and animals. FLPe and wtFLP have been compared in multiple assays in vitro and in vivo, and in mouse genetics, FLPe has been shown to be very effective like Cre.

Background: Male pattern baldness (MPB), an observable trait, has been reported to be associated with various diseases, such as prostate cancer and cardiovascular disease. Oral sulfur-containing gases have also been suggested to be useful as markers of systemic health condition. However, there are no known reports regarding the associations among MPB, and oral sulfur-containing gases, and systemic health conditions in males.

This study was conducted to examine the existence of increased arterial stiffness of the central to middle-sized arteries and left ventricular (LV) structural/functional abnormalities in subjects with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who had normal clinic blood pressure. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) measurement and echocardiography were conducted in 164 consecutive subjects with normal clinic blood pressure evaluated for sleep disorders. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was an independently associated variable, even after adjustments for age, gender and risk factors for cardiovascular disease, with baPWV (R(2)=0.

Background: Although obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity is evaluated by the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), the value of AHI in evaluating cardiovascular risks, especially in mild to moderate OSA, is unclear.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the validity of a new index, the integrated area of desaturation (IAD), to detect the incidence of cardiovascular events (CVEs) in such patients.

Methods: We enrolled 230 consecutive patients with mild to moderate OSA and 354 with severe OSA diagnosed by polysomnography, of whom 53 and 112, respectively, had CVEs.
