Synaptic deficits are closely correlated with cognitive dysfunction in Alzheimer's disease (AD), and synaptic integrity is regulated by the actin cytoskeleton. We demonstrated here that the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein family verprolin-homologous protein (WAVE), a key molecule for actin assembly, co-aggregated with both hyperphosphorylated tau and phosphorylated collapsin response mediator protein 2 (CRMP2) in neurofibrillary tangles and abnormal neurites of the AD brain. Although phosphorylated CRMP2 accumulation was induced in the brains of JNPL3 mice, WAVE accumulation was not detected in the brains of either JNPL3 or Tg2576 mice that developed neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid-beta (Abeta) plaques, respectively.

Preindustrial changes in the Asian summer monsoon climate from the 1700s to the 1850s were estimated with an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) using historical global land cover/use change data reconstructed for the last 300 years. Extended cultivation resulted in a decrease in monsoon rainfall over the Indian subcontinent and southeastern China and an associated weakening of the Asian summer monsoon circulation. The precipitation decrease in India was marked and was consistent with the observational changes derived from examining the Himalayan ice cores for the concurrent period.

Wogon-Sugi has been reported as a cytoplasmically inherited virescent mutant selected from a horticultural variety of Cryptomeria japonica. Although previous studies of plastid structure and inheritance indicated that at least some mutations are encoded by the chloroplast genome, the causative gene responsible for the primary chlorophyll deficiency in Wogon-Sugi, has not been identified. In this study, we identified this gene by genomic sequencing of chloroplast DNA and genetic analysis.

Background: Antithyroid drugs (ATDs) are prescribed as the initial therapy for the majority of patients with Graves' disease in many areas of the world. Although, it is well known that agranulocytosis is one of the most serious side effects of ATDs, there has not yet been any conclusive evidence that the prevalence of agranulocytosis induced by ATDs is dose related. Although most follicular lymphomas are believed to be of nodal origin, they sometimes originate from the duodenum. We have reported that the latter differ from nodal follicular lymphomas in having lower clinical stages and uniformly low histological grades, along with variable region of immunoglobulin heavy chain gene (VH) usage that is more similar to mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas. Little is known, however, about whether they possess other characteristics of nodal follicular lymphomas, particularly ongoing mutations with follicular dendritic cells.

IgG4-related disease sometimes involves regional and/or systemic lymph nodes, and often clinically and/or histologically mimics multicentric Castleman's disease or malignant lymphoma. In this study, we examined clinical and pathologic findings of nine patients with systemic IgG4-related lymphadenopathy. None of these cases were associated with human herpes virus-8 or human immunodeficiency virus infection, and there was no T-cell receptor or immunoglobulin gene rearrangement.

Background And Aims: Although the lateral movement of water and gas in tree stems is an important issue for understanding tree physiology, as well as for the development of wood preservation technologies, little is known about the vascular pathways for radial flow. The aim of the current study was to understand the occurrence and the structure of anatomical features of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) wood including the tracheid networks, and area fractions of intertracheary pits, tangential walls of ray cells and radial intercellular spaces that may be related to the radial permeability (conductivity) of the xylem.

New experiments show that different combinations of translesion DNA polymerases act to bypass lesions in mammalian cells, depending on the type of DNA damage. Bypass of most lesions tested was dependent on REV3L (pol zeta) and at least one additional DNA polymerase. The data fit a model whereby DNA polymerases work sequentially to bypass adducts in DNA.

Prolamins, a group of rice (Oryza sativa) seed storage proteins, are synthesized on the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and deposited in ER-derived type I protein bodies (PB-Is) in rice endosperm cells. The accumulation mechanism of prolamins, which do not possess the well-known ER retention signal, remains unclear. In order to elucidate whether the accumulation of prolamin in the ER requires seed-specific factors, the subcellular localization of the constitutively expressed green fluorescent protein fused to prolamin (prolamin-GFP) was examined in seeds, leaves, and roots of transgenic rice plants.

We developed 17 chloroplast microsatellite markers, which consisted of seven mononucleotide microsatellites with a minimum repeat number of 10 and 10 dinucleotide microsatellites with a minimum repeat number of six, from the complete chloroplast genomic sequence of Cryptomeria japonica. The objective of our study was to investigate the clinicopathological features of the currently ill-defined subtype of primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma of unspecified type (CTCLU) with a cytotoxic phenotype and no Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) association. A series of 27 patients with CTCLU (median age 49 years; range 25-87 years; 18 men) was reviewed. Performance status scores above 1 (7%), clinical stages above 2 (15%), B symptoms (26%), extracutaneous involvement (30%), and a fatal course within 1 year of diagnosis (19%) were observed infrequently.

BeWo cells, derived from human choriocarcinoma, have been known to respond to forskolin or cAMP analogues by differentiating into multinucleated cells- like syncytiotrophoblasts on the surfaces of chorionic villi of the human placenta. In this study, we demonstrated that long-term treatment with forskolin enhances the tight junction (TJ) formation in human placental BeWo cells. Interestingly, AMPK activation and phosphorylation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), a molecule downstream from AMPK, were induced by long-term incubation (>12h) with forskolin, despite not being induced by acute stimulation with forskolin.
