A 76-year-old man presented after aspiration of a crown during dental treatment. He had no immediate symptoms;therefore, the crown was not thoroughly examined at the time of the event. The patient developed high fever and chest pain and sought medical attention, 9 months later.

Ideal treatment should minimize adhesions and reduce the recurrence rate. This study aimed to explore different covering methods and compare the frequency of early recurrence for each covering method.

However, no study has conducted a holistic assessment of the relationship between volunteering and the multidimensional health and well-being outcomes of East Asian populations using a strong study design for causal inference. To address this gap, this study examined the associations between volunteer group participation and the subsequent health and well-being of Japanese older adults.

We report a case of IMA presenting as a cystic lesion in the S10 of the right lung, diagnosed by surgical biopsy and treated with right lower lobectomy. The patient was a 60-year-old man who was found to have a 10-mm-sized frosted ground-glass opacity with a 10-mm-sized air space in the S10 of the right lung while undergoing follow-up after renal cancer surgery in 2018.

Clustered protocadherin (Pcdh) functions as a cell recognition molecule through the homophilic interaction in the central nervous system. However, its interactions have not yet been visualized in neurons. We previously reported PcdhγB2-Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) probes to be applicable only to cell lines.

Mutations in the human Protection of Telomeres 1 (POT1) gene are frequently detected in cancers with abnormally long telomeres, suggesting that the loss of POT1 function disrupts the regulation of telomere length homeostasis to promote telomere elongation. However, our understanding of the mechanisms leading to elongated telomeres remains incomplete.

We compared four approaches, including a classification filter composed of particle characteristic parameters, principal component analysis, decision tree, and convolutional neural network in the performance of the developed classifier/model. Finally, the points to be considered were summarized for measurement using the FI method, and for establishing the classifier/model using machine learning to differentiate silicone oil droplets and protein particles.

Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (Cdk5) is a Ser/Thr kinase activated by p35 or p39 in neurons and plays a role in a variety of neuronal functions, including psychiatric behaviors. We previously reported that VPA suppressed Cdk5 activity by reducing the expression of p35 in cultured cortical neurons, leaving p39 unchanged.

The growth cone is an important structure that is involved in both processes, and GAP-43 (growth associated protein-43 kDa) is believed to be the classical molecular marker. Previously, we used growth cone phosphoproteomics to demonstrate that S96 and T172 of GAP-43 in rodents are highly phosphorylated sites that are phosphorylated by c-jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK).

Previous studies have reported that elder abuse increases the risk of dementia; however, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have investigated the association between different types of abuse and dementia onset yet. This study, therefore, investigated the association between physical, psychological, and financial abuses and dementia onset in independent older adults in Japan.

With this study, we further explored the potential differences in the aforementioned associations for urban and non-urban areas.
Methods: We analyzed 6 years of prospective cohort data from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study, beginning with the baseline data collected between 2010 and 2012, for 51,186 physically and cognitively independent individuals aged ≥65 years (23,785 men and 27,401 women) from 346 communities in 16 municipalities across 7 prefectures.
Human shelterin components POT1 and TPP1 form a stable heterodimer that protects telomere ends from ATR-dependent DNA damage responses and regulates telomerase-dependent telomere extension. Mice possess two functionally distinct POT1 proteins. POT1a represses ATR/CHK1 DNA damage responses and the alternative non-homologous end-joining DNA repair pathway while POT1b regulates C-strand resection and recruits the CTC1-STN1-TEN1 (CST) complex to telomeres to mediate C-strand fill-in synthesis.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe repair of DNA double-stranded breaks (DSBs) is an essential function performed by the Classical Non-Homologous End-Joining (C-NHEJ) pathway in higher eukaryotes. C-NHEJ, in fact, does double duty as it is also required for the repair of the intermediates formed during lymphoid B- and T-cell recombination. Consequently, the failure to properly repair DSBs leads to both genomic instability and immunodeficiency.

We aim to examine the association between three SESs (education, job, and income indicators) and dementia onset in older adults.

Aβ is produced by sequential cleavages of amyloid precursor protein (APP) by β- and γ-secretases. These cleavages take place in endosomes during intracellular trafficking of APP through the endocytic and recycling pathways.

We firstly conjugated fluorescein to glucosamine via an amide or methylene linker at the C-2 position of d-glucosamine, but the resulting compounds, FLG1 and FLG2, showed no uptake into MIN6 cells. So, we changed the fluorophore moiety to a fluorescein analogue, 2-Me TokyoGreen, which is less negatively charged.
