Bacterial endosymbionts inhabit diverse fungal lineages. Although the number of studies on bacteria is increasing, the mechanisms by which bacteria affect their fungal hosts remain unclear. We herein examined the homothallic isolate, Mortierella sugadairana YTM39, harboring a Burkholderiaceae-related endobacterium, which did not produce sexual spores.

Gelatin hydrogels with eicosapentaenoic acid can prevent osteoarthritis progression in vivo in a mouse model.

Eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) is an antioxidant and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid that reduces inflammatory cytokine production. Gelatin hydrogel can be used as a carrier of a physiologically active substance that release it gradually for an average of ~3 weeks. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the effect of EPA-incorporating gelatin hydrogels on osteoarthritis (OA) progression in vivo.

Sciatic Nerve Palsy following Curved Periacetabular Osteotomy.

Curved periacetabular osteotomy (CPO) is used for the treatment of dysplastic hips. Previous studies have reported satisfying outcomes and low rate of severe complications associated with this procedure; however, no case of postoperative sciatic nerve palsy has been reported. In this study, we describe a case of postoperative sciatic nerve palsy following CPO due to nerve strangulation by scar tissue without direct injury.

Supramolecular self-healing materials from non-covalent cross-linking host-guest interactions.

The introduction of non-covalent bonds is effective for achieving self-healing properties because they can be controlled reversibly. One approach to introduce these bonds into supramolecular materials is use of host-guest interactions. This feature article summarizes the development of supramolecular materials constructed by non-covalent cross-linking through several approaches, such as host-guest interactions between host polymers and guest polymers, 1 : 2-type host-guest interactions, and host-guest interactions from the polymerization of host-guest inclusion complexes.

Evaluating the immunoproteasome as a potential therapeutic target in cisplatin-resistant small cell and non-small cell lung cancer.

Purpose: We evaluated the expression of proteasome subunits to assess whether the proteasome could be a therapeutic target in cisplatin-resistant lung cancer cells.

Methods: Cisplatin-resistant (CR) variants were established from three non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines (A549, H1299, and H1975) and two small cell lung cancer (SCLC) cell lines (SBC3 and SBC5). The expression of proteasome subunits, the sensitivity to immunoproteasome inhibitors, and 20S proteasomal proteolytic activity were examined in the CR variants of the lung cancer cell lines.

Holographic display having a wide viewing zone using a MEMS SLM without pixel pitch reduction.

A one-micron pixel pitch is believed to be required for spatial light modulators (SLMs) to realize holographic displays possessing a wide viewing zone. This study proposes the use of a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) SLM for not only displaying holographic patterns but also scanning laser beam. During the rotation of MEMS mirrors in the MEMS SLM, the timing of laser pulses illuminating the MEMS SLM is controlled to change the reflection direction of light modulated by the MEMS SLM in order to enlarge the viewing zone.

Wide-angle MEMS-based imaging lidar by decoupled scan axes.

We present an optical architecture for a scanning lidar in which a digital micromirror device (DMD) is placed at an intermediate image plane in a receiver to decouple the trade-offs between scan angle, scan speed, and aperture size of the lidar's transmitter and receiver. In the architecture, the transmitter with a galvo mirror and the receiver with a DMD scan the horizontal and vertical fields of view, respectively, to enable an increased field of view of 50°, centimeter transmitter beam diameter, and video frame rate range finding captures. We present our optimized system and discuss the adjustable parameter trade-offs.

Redox-responsive supramolecular polymeric networks having double-threaded inclusion complexes.

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels have attracted attention as soft actuators that act similarly to muscles. In this work, hydrogel actuators controlled by host-guest interactions have been developed. The introduction of a 1:1 inclusion complex into a hydrogel is a popular design for achieving a change in cross-linking density.

Japanese encephalitis in the Western Pacific Region: Implication from the Republic of Korea.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is endemic in the Western Pacific Region. We aim to describe the regional status of control of JE, based on the World Health Organization (WHO) surveillance data, and to share the experience from the Republic of Korea. Substantial progress has been made in the region to date; however, epidemiologic changes have not been delineated.

Methotrexate (MTX) is an antifolate that suppresses DNA syntheses by inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase. High-dose methotrexate treatment with deferred radiotherapy is a standard protocol in primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) treatments.

miR-101, miR-548b, miR-554, and miR-1202 are reliable prognosis predictors of the miRNAs associated with cancer immunity in primary central nervous system lymphoma.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) inhibit protein function by silencing the translation of target mRNAs. However, in primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL), the expression and functions of miRNAs are inadequately known. Here, we examined the expression of 847 miRNAs in 40 PCNSL patients with a microarray and investigated for the miRNA predictors associated with cancer immunity-related genes such as T helper cell type 1/2 (Th-1/Th-2) and regulatory T cell (T-reg) status, and stimulatory and inhibitory checkpoint genes, for prognosis prediction in PCNSL.

Comparative Analysis of Fecal Microbiota in Grasscutter () and Other Herbivorous Livestock in Ghana.

The grasscutter (also known as the greater cane rat; ) is a large rodent native to West Africa that is currently under domestication process for meat production. However, little is known about the physiology of this species. In the present study, aiming to provide information about gut microbiota of the grasscutter and better understand its physiology, we investigated the intestinal microbiota of grasscutters and compared it with that of other livestock (cattle, goat, rabbit, and sheep) using 16S rRNA metagenomics analysis.

Bacterial and protozoan pathogens/symbionts in ticks infecting wild grasscutters (Thryonomys swinderianus) in Ghana.

Ticks and tick-borne pathogens constitute a great threat to livestock production and are a potential health hazard to humans. Grasscutters (Thryonomys swinderianus) are widely hunted for meat in Ghana and many other West and Central African countries. However, tick-borne zoonotic risks posed by wild grasscutters have not been assessed.

Pelvic morphology medial to the femoral head center predicts anterior coverage and range of motion after curved periacetabular osteotomy.

This study observed anterior coverage extent after lateral rotation of the acetabulum, without anterior or posterior rotation, during curved periacetabular osteotomy by three-dimensional simulation, and determined if preoperative pelvic morphology affects postoperative anterior coverage and range of motion. Thirty patients scheduled for consecutive primary curved periacetabular osteotomy for developmental hip dysplasia at our hospital between 2016 and 2017 were included. Virtual acetabular osteotomies were performed to achieve a postoperative lateral center-edge angle of 30°.

Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) is a safe and effective surgical procedure for patients suffering from comparatively larger benign prostatic hyperplasia. However, the rate of postoperative urethral stricture (POUS) is relatively high, which can render further invasive intervention. Here we assessed the POUS rate, riskfactors and outcomes in 206 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia who underwent HoLEP at our hospital between January 2006 and December 2015.

Usefulness of repair using Hem-o-lok™ for peritoneal tear as a complication of totally extraperitoneal repair: Case series.

Morphological and molecular characteristics of seven species from sika deer () in Japan, including three new species.

Samples of diaphragm were collected from 53 sika deer from Gifu Prefecture, Japan; 220 sarcocysts were isolated, examined in wet mounts and classified according to their cyst wall protrusions. The sarcocysts were then examined molecularly in order to assign them to different species. All but 11 of the 220 sarcocysts were initially identified by means of a multiplex PCR assay targeting of five species, whereas the remaining 11 sarcocysts were identified by standard PCR and sequencing.
