Background: The number of elderly patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) has been increasing worldwide. Complications are common in elderly patients who undergo colonoscopy, raising doubts about whether colonoscopy should be performed in the same way in this age group as in younger patients. The aim of this study was to determine the safety of full bowel preparation and colonoscopy in elderly patients with UC.

Background: Carbon dioxide (CO2) insufflation has been shown to reduce the procedure-related pain and discomfort during colonoscopy. However, the effects of CO2 insufflation on the improvement of participant's stress had not been objectively analyzed.

Methods: Using a randomized, double-blinded design, 100 consecutive patients undergoing colonoscopy were assigned to have their examination performed with either CO2 or air insufflation.

Aims: We investigated the therapeutic effect of polaprezinc (PZ), N-(3-aminopropionyl)-L-histidinato zinc, in rats with experimentally-induced colitis by focusing on calcineurin (CN) inhibition. CN plays a crucial role in T-cell activation and cytokine gene expression and is targeted by immunosuppressants such as cyclosporine and FK506.

Main Methods: Colitis was induced into male Wistar rats by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid and was treated with intrarectally administered PZ.

Primary adrenal lymphoma (PAL) is extremely rare although involvement of malignant lymphoma into adrenals is common. We report a case of a 58-year-old man with bilateral PAL who demonstrated adrenal insufficiency. Primary large B-cell lymphoma was proven by a computed tomography-guided needle biopsy of the adrenal tumor.

The present study investigated the role of calcineurin (CaN) in the proliferation of human colorectal cancers. CaN activity and protein expression were increased in human colorectal cancers. Nuclear transcription factor NFAT, a physiological substrate for CaN, was activated in human colon cancer specimen as well as in the human colon cancer cell lines.

A 63-year-old woman was referred and admitted to our department for further examination of protein-losing enteropathy (PLE), which was diagnosed by alpha-anti trypsin test. Her symptoms were frequent vomiting, watery diarrhea and hypoproteinemia. Although intensive examination for PLE was performed in her previous hospital, the origin of the disease was not detected.

We report a case of successfully treated acute thrombocytopenia associated with preexisting ulcerative colitis (UC). The patient had typical symptoms of UC, and colonoscopy showed pancolitis. During treatment with sulfasalazopyridine (SASP) and steroids, thrombocytopenia was observed.

The etiology of inflammatory bowel disease is multifactorial and appears to combine both genetic and environmental factors. We experienced here a rare occurrence of woman monozygotic twins with ulcerative colitis (UC). A 45-year-old woman (the elder monozygotic twin) was admitted to our hospital because of bloody diarrhea occurring over 10 times per day, abdominal pain and fever.
