The Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) accident in March of 2011 released substantial amounts of radionuclides into the environment. We collected 4,957 deciduous teeth formed in children before the Fukushima accident to obtain precise control data for teeth formed after the accident. Radioactivity was measured using imaging plates (IP) and epidemiologically assessed using multivariate regression analysis.

Background: Podoplanin expression in cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) has been proposed as an indicator for poor prognosis in patients with invasive breast carcinomas, but little is known about its clinical significance in node-negative breast cancer patients with hormone receptor (HR) + /HER2  - subtype, who are expected to have a favorable prognosis.

Methods: Immunohistochemical analyses were performed on 169 resected specimens of node-negative invasive carcinoma of no special type with HR + /HER2 - subtype using antibodies for podoplanin. When more than 10% of CAFs showed immunoreactivity with podoplanin as strong as that of internal positive controls, the specimens were judged as podoplanin-positive.

Background: The efficacy and safety of nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-PTX) plus gemcitabine (GEM) in elderly Japanese patients with pancreatic cancer remain unclear. Multidisciplinary discussion (MDD) requiring close communication between specialists (clinicians, radiologists and pathologists) is the gold standard for the diagnosis of idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIPs). However, MDD by specialists is not always feasible because they are often separated by time and location. An online database would facilitate data sharing and MDD.

Type I diabetes, an autoimmune disease, induces insulin deficiency, which then disrupts vascular endothelial cell function, affecting blood and lymphatic vessels. Nitric oxide (NO) is an immune-induced destructive mediator in type I diabetes, and inhibition of its production promotes arteriosclerosis. In this study, lymphangiogenesis and expression of NO synthase (NOS) during the healing process after tooth extraction were investigated immunohistochemically in control (C57BL) and Akita mice as a diabetes model.

Effect of green tea catechins on gastric mucosal dysplasia in insulin-gastrin mice.

Green tea catechins (GTCs) have been implicated in various physiological effects, including anti-carcinogenic activities. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of GTCs specifically on the development of gastritis and pre-malignant lesions in insulin-gastrin mice. Nine-week-old male INS-GAS mice (n=38) were supplemented with GTCs for 4 and 28 weeks, and their body weights, serum gastrin levels, histopathology and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels in gastric tissue and mucosal cell proliferation were monitored.

Revascularization for acute blunt popliteal artery injury.

Case: A 45-year-old man was brought to our hospital in pre-shock after falling from a motorcycle. As we diagnosed him with open fracture of the right femur with leg ischemia, we performed revascularization of injured popliteal artery and treated the leg. The pathological findings showed fragmentation and decrease of elastic fibers and fragmentation of collagen fibers, but no inflammatory cells or intimal hyperplasia, and no dissection.

Evaluation of diagnostic accuracy in CT perfusion analysis in moyamoya disease.

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to determine optimal threshold of vascular pixel elimination (VPE) for CT perfusion (CTP) and to assess diagnostic accuracy of CTP by comparing with xenon enhanced CT (XeCT) in moyamoya disease.
