The role of tumor-resident microbiota in modulating tumor immunity remains unclear. Here, we discovered an abundance of intra-tumoral bacteria, such us E.coli, residing and resulting in Colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM).

The inclusion of spinopelvic fixation has been reported to induce progression of hip joint arthropathy in a radiographic follow-up study. However, its biomechanical mechanism has not yet been elucidated.

This study evaluates these changing attitudes.
Methods: At Tokai University School of Medicine, from 2006 through 2015, 852 students were analyzed 3 times, pre-1st-year introduction Kampo lecture, pre-4th-year 6-hour lectures, and post-3-hour experience-based learning (EBL) course.

Background: B-cell activating factor (BAFF) is considered to have a role in the pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis (SSc).
Aim: We conducted a longitudinal study on early SSc patients to determine the change in BAFF serum level after treatment and its association with organ involvements.
Methods: A total of 46 patients (32 diffuse, 14 limited) were recruited, among which 35 patients (24 diffuse, 11 limited) completed 12-month follow-up.
Background: Japanese traditional medicine (Kampo medicine) is an important subject in Japanese medical schools. Acupuncture and moxibustion (AM), essential categories of Kampo medicine, are taught in a few medical schools today. However, the current state of postgraduate AM education is unknown.

Precise teaching of Kampo is one of the important issues in medical education, and therefore acupuncture and moxibustion education has been applied to students in Tokai University School of Medicine. To investigate and compare the awareness the medical students have of acupuncture and moxibustion before and after the education, we conducted questionnaire surveys.

The present study aimed to describe and analyze the career of Edith Magalhães Fraenkel and her important legacy to Brazilian nursing. The methodology chosen was a documentary analysis of her areas of participation based on documents of the Historical Cultural Center of Iberian-American School of Nursing of the University of São Paulo (Universidade de São Paulo, USP) and in the Rectory of the same University. The following thematic topics were categorized: preparation for leadership, moving to São Paulo, creation of the School of Nursing of USP, event organization, and unique developments at the end of her career.

We used QBF pattern scores to determine whether or not medical students, presumed to be healthy, had any potentially pathological conditions.
Methods: Six consecutive fourth-year classes totaling 652 medical students evaluated their own QBF conditions using Terasawa's QBF pattern scores.

Objective: Japanese medical schools currently only offer students traditional Japanese Kampo medicine education for an extremely limited amount of time. The purpose of this study was to discover how to generate interest in and motivate learning Kampo medicine.
Methods: Kampo medical sessions, including a lecture series, written examinations, and small-group (12-14 students) EBL (experience-based learning) sessions, were provided for 4th-year medical students (N=117) at Tokai University School of Medicine.
Purpose: Patient age and gender may be associated with response to peginterferon alpha plus ribavirin, the current standard of care (SOC) for chronic hepatitis C genotype 1. We queried whether there was an association between age, gender, and treatment response to SOC in Japanese patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1.
Methods: Between 2006 and 2009, HCV-infected Japanese patients treated with peginterferon alpha-2b plus ribavirin for 48 weeks were enrolled.
Quantitative analysis of miroestrol (1) and kwakhurin (3) by HPLC, leading to standardisation of commercially available Thai miracle herb 'Kwao Keur' which has been identified with Pueraria mirifica, was established using independent solvent systems. The simple isolation procedure of highly estrogenic miroestrol (1) and deoxymiroestrol (2) from P. mirifica was also proposed.

We investigated the incidence of HCC during and immediately after peginterferon-alfa-2a and ribavirin (RBV) treatment in patients with chronic hepatitis C in Japan. HCC was detected in 8 of 238 patients during and after these treatments (mean follow-up period: 572 ± 252 days).

Aims: We assessed the sustained virological response (SVR) rates in HCV genotype 2-infected Japanese patients in relation to the duration of treatment.
Methods: Between 2006 and 2009, among 147 patients with HCV genotype 2-infection in Chiba Prefecture, 138 consecutive patients were finally enrolled.
Extremely low levels of serum hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA can be detected by COBAS TaqMan HCV test. To investigate whether the COBAS TaqMan HCV test is useful for measuring rapid virological response (RVR) and early virological response (EVR) to predict sustained virological response (SVR), we compared the virological response to PEG-IFN-alfa 2a plus RBV in 76 patients infected with HCV genotype 1 when undetectable HCV RNA by the COBAS TaqMan HCV test was used, with those when below 1.7 log IU/mL HCV RNA by COBAS TaqMan HCV test was used, which corresponded to the use of traditional methods.

Prevalence of HIV-associated cognitive impairment is rising. Amyloid-beta (A-beta) plaque deposition in the brain may be a contributing factor as epidemiological data suggests significant numbers of long-term HIV survivors are at elevated risk of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD). HIV-1 Tat-induced A-beta deposition, tau phosphorylation, and subsequent neuronal death could be risk factors for subsequent AD and/or HIV-related cognitive impairment.

The following year, it was introduced in pharmacy as well as medicine. For fourth-year students at Tokai Medical University, a lecture on Kampo herbal medicine, focusing on clinical pharmacy, was given using team- based learning.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFRecently several polarimetric techniques have been suggested, designed deliberately for automatic whole-field birefringence imaging in photoelastic models with essentially three-dimensional stresses. In general, these techniques are feasible for mapping three optical parameters that determine birefringence in a given case. However, the difficulty in attaining a high level of data accuracy over the whole image persists.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIt is shown that three optical parameters that are necessary for stress computation in integrated photoelasticity can be measured with high accuracy by use of a Fourier polarimetry method. Inasmuch as a photoelastic sample, which is an object of investigation in integrated photoelasticity, is a kind of an elliptic retarder, the technique presented here measures relative retardation delta, azimuth angle theta, and ellipticity angle epsilon instead of the characteristic parameters that traditionally have been used in integrated photoelasticity. The ability of the new technique to provide better accuracy with a simpler setup has been proved experimentally.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe search for fast, precise, and robust testing techniques remains an important problem in automated full-field photoelasticity. The polarizer-sample-analyzer (PSA)-based three-wavelength polarimetric method presented here employs discrete Fourier analysis and a spectral content unwrapping algorithm to provide completely automatic, simple, fast, and accurate determination of both photoelastic parameters. Fourier analysis of experimental data and a three-wavelength approach reduce the effect of noise and efficiently cope with poor accuracy in regions of both isochromatic and isoclinic maps.

The chemical structure of the mercury-mediated T-T pair (T-Hg(I)I-T) was determined with (15)N NMR spectroscopy. In order to determine the chemical structure of the T-Hg(I)I-T pair, (15)N-(15)N J-coupling across a metal center (2JNN) was employed. Notably, this is the first observation of (2)J(NN) in a biological macromolecule (DNA duplex).
