This study used optical attenuation coefficient (OAC)-based optical coherence tomography (OCT) en face images to assess the ellipsoid zone (EZ) in the foveal region. This retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study of 41 healthy volunteers and 34 patients with retinal diseases included imaging data acquired using a prototype swept-source OCT system. EZ en face images were generated from OCT raster scan volumes based on OAC, followed by denoising and binarization to quantify the percentage of EZ structural normality or abnormality relative to the total imaging area.

Orthognathic surgery has a high incidence of postoperative nausea (PON) and vomiting (POV), delaying mobility initiation and postoperative recovery. Bleeding is another risk associated with this surgical procedure. We aimed to compare total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) and volatile anesthesia in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery in terms of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) incidence and hemodynamic changes.

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are nanosized molecular metal oxide anion clusters with tuneable structures and functionalities, and they exhibit a redox chemistry and catalytic activity in multielectron redox processes. These are typically poor electrical conductors (<10 Scm), which is attributed to negligible electronic interactions among anions in the solid state. Since the reduced electrons on the d metals in POMs are delocalized, electrical conductivity was improved when judicious pathways for the electrons were created by bridging the POMs.

A heterometallic and paramagnetic one-dimensional aligned chain in -Rh(+2)-Rh(+2)- Pt(+2)-Ni(+2)-Pt(+2)- with direct metal-metal bonds was obtained via HOMO-LUMO interactions at the σ* (dz) orbital between [Rh(OCCH)] and [PtNi(piam)(NH)] (piam=pivalamidate). The one-dimensional chains had straight backbones attributed to face-to-face stacking of each complex, and the Ni atoms were separated by approximately 13 Å from four different metals. Each Ni atom had two unpaired electrons in the d-orbitals, which strongly exchanged with J=-37.

Article Synopsis
  • A retrospective case-control study was conducted to evaluate personalized health guidance interventions for individuals with type 2 diabetes and obesity at Takagi Hospital from January 2017 to October 2021.
  • The study involved 108 participants who received health guidance, split into two groups: one without diabetes medication and one with medication, while controls matched for age and sex did not receive guidance.
  • Results showed that those who received health guidance, especially without pharmacotherapy, showed significant improvements in health metrics such as weight and blood pressure, indicating that personalized health interventions can be beneficial for managing diabetes and obesity.

  • Dual-energy computed tomography (DE-CT) can help distinguish between subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and iodine contrast leaks (SAIL) after mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for stroke victims.
  • Of the 81 patients studied, 25% had SAH and 63% had SAIL; those with SAIL experienced larger infarct volumes one day post-MT (95 mL vs 29 mL).
  • Importantly, SAIL was linked to malignant brain edema (MBE), affecting 22% of patients with SAIL compared to just 3% without it, while SAH did not show a similar association.

Gastrointestinal bleeding is one serious complication of patients undergoing hemodialysis with end-stage renal failure. The present study aimed to evaluate risks and clinical features of real-world clinical data on upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding in patients undergoing hemodialysis during a 5-year longitudinal observation period. This study included 151 patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis at Takagi Hospital between December 2017 and December 2022.

Background: Ozone is one of the triggers of asthma, but its impact on the pathophysiology of asthma, such as via airway inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), is not fully understood. Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) is increasingly seen as a crucial molecule associated with asthma severity, such as corticosteroid resistance.

Methods: Female BALB/c mice sensitized and challenged with house dust mite (HDM) were exposed to ozone at 2 ppm for 3 h.

A wide variety of properties by the presence of functional organic groups have so far been investigated by using periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO)-type materials but not yet discussed with surface properties that are controlled through the success in synthesizing analogous non-silica-based hybrid mesoporous materials and subsequent evaluation and/or comparison of their properties. Here, we demonstrated the advance in synthesizing biphenyl group (-Ph-Ph-, also expressed as -2Ph)-containing mesoporous metal phosphonates with a rational understanding of surface properties. Ordered mesoporous films of aluminum and titanium ones (AOP-2Ph and TiOP-2Ph) were fabricated by spin-coating and their powders were recovered by spray-drying with the confined assembly of spherical mesopores.

Introduction: Obesity is associated with severe asthma, but no specific treatment has been established. The gut microbiome is increasingly recognized as a crucial factor, but specific treatments focused on the gut microbiome have not been established. Recently, azithromycin has been found to have the capacity to attenuate exacerbations, a characteristic of severe asthma.

Regulatory T cells (Tregs) suppress the activation and subsequent effector functions of CD4 effector T cells (Teffs). However, molecular mechanisms that enforce Treg-mediated suppression in CD4 Teff are unclear. We found that Tregs suppressed activation-induced global protein synthesis in CD4 Teffs prior to cell division.

Heterometallic extended metal atom chains (EMACs) aligned with three types of metal were rationally synthesized by forming unbridged metal-metal bonds based on the interactions between highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals at the d orbital. These chains form pentanuclear structures aligned as Rh-Pt-M-Pt-Rh with relatively large formation constants of 5.0×10  M for M=Pt and 6.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study looked at major cardiovascular events (MACE) among 132 hemodialysis patients over three years, identifying instances like cardiac death, heart attacks, and strokes.
  • - Out of these patients, 31 experienced MACE, with key findings showing those with MACE had lower body mass index (BMI) and longer dialysis duration, along with more GI bleeding and higher aspirin use.
  • - The research concluded that a BMI under 18.5 could be an independent risk factor for MACE, even in the absence of malnutrition.
