Value of E-PASS models for predicting postoperative morbidity and mortality in resection of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder carcinoma.

Background: It has previously been reported that a general risk model, Estimation of Physiologic Ability and Surgical Stress (E-PASS), and its modified version, mE-PASS, had a high predictive power for postoperative mortality and morbidity in a variety of gastrointestinal surgeries. This study evaluated their utilities in proximal biliary carcinoma resection.

Methods: E-PASS variables were collected in patients undergoing resection of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder carcinoma in Japanese referral hospitals.

High blood pressure in middle age (up to 64 years) has been proposed as a predictive indicator of dementia. However, the association between hypertension and the cognitive functioning is controversial in older age groups. The aim of this study was to investigate this association in 70-80-year-old participants in the Japanese study of Septuagenarians, Octogenarians and Nonagenarians Investigation with Centenarians (SONIC).

Efficacy of surgical treatment using microwave coagulo-necrotic therapy for unresectable multiple colorectal liver metastases.

Background: Five or more colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) are considered marginally resectable and cannot be treated solely by hepatic resection (Hr). This study investigated the long-term effectiveness of surgical treatment using microwave coagulo-necrotic therapy (MCN) and/or Hr for marginally resectable or unresectable multiple CRLM.

Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed 82 consecutive CRLM patients with ≥5 CRLM who underwent MCN, Hr, or both, at our institution from 1994 to 2012.

Background: Atropine sulfate is an anticholinergic agent for treatment of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis and is orally administrated as a triturate with lactose hydrate. Because of the low safety margin of atropine sulfate, triturate uniformity is a key safety factor. In this study, we assessed the uniformity of atropine sulfate in 1000-fold triturates prepared by wet mixing and dry mixing methods and discussed the cause of the difference in uniformity between two preparation methods.

A randomised controlled trial of meloxicam, a Cox-2 inhibitor, to prevent hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence after initial curative treatment.

Background: Because the recurrence rate of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is high, even after curative treatments such as hepatic resection and microwave ablation, chemopreventive agents that can effectively suppress HCC recurrence are required. Cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) was recently found to be overexpressed in HCC. Therefore, Cox-2 inhibitors may offer a chemopreventive therapy for HCC.

Two major models of a hybrid zone allowed us to hypothesize that environmental conditions influence hybrid zone dynamics in two ways. In the first model, an environmental gradient determines the mosaic distribution at the boundary between ecologically differentiated species (mosaic hybrid zone model).

Glycoprotein nonmetastatic melanoma protein B (Gpnmb) is a transmembrane glycoprotein, which negatively regulates the inflammatory responses of macrophages. However, the role of Gpnmb in intestinal macrophages remains to be fully elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate the expression of Gpnmb and its effects on colonic mucosal injuries associated with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)‑induced colitis in BALB/c mice, DBA/2J (D2) mice lacking Gpnmb and Gpnmb‑transgenic DBA/2J mice (D2‑gpnmb+).

Introduction: Opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) is a rare neurological disorder that is associated with paraneoplastic diseases. Because OMS can frequently relapse, patients may be inflicted with neurological problems for a long time. Recently, rituximab (RTX) was introduced as a drug to treat OMS.

Long-Term Maintenance of Complete Response after Sorafenib Treatment for Multiple Lung Metastases from Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Sorafenib is an effective treatment for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) characterized by disease stabilization. However, the response rates are very low (<9%percnt;), and a complete response is rarely achieved. We report an extremely rare case of a HCC patient with multiple lung metastases treated with sorafenib who achieved a complete response for a long period.

Carcinosarcoma of the gallbladder: report of a case.

Carcinosarcoma is a rare neoplasm with epithelial and mesenchymal components. We herein report the case of a 68-year-old male with a carcinosarcoma of the gallbladder. Preoperative examinations revealed the gallbladder cancer infiltrating the liver with a multinodular mass with a portal vein tumor thrombus through the right anterior branch of the portal vein.

Paired box gene 5 isoforms A and B have different functions in transcriptional regulation of B cell development-related genes in immature B cells.

The transcription factor paired box gene 5 (Pax5) is essential for B cell development. In this study, complementation analyses in Pax5-deficient DT40 cells showed that three Pax5 isoforms Pax5A, Pax5B and Pax5BΔEx8 (another spliced isoform of Pax5B lacking exon 8) exhibit distinct roles in transcriptional regulation of six B cell development-related genes (activation-induced cytidine deaminase, Aiolos, BTB and CNC homology 2, B cell lymphoma-6, early B cell factor 1, origin binding factor-1 genes), transcriptions of which are remarkably down-regulated by Pax5-deficiency. Moreover, ectopic expression study shows that these Pax5 isoforms may regulate themselves and each other at the transcriptional level.

A novel cell-containing device for regenerative medicine: biodegradable nonwoven filters with peripheral blood cells promote wound healing.

The efficacy of skin regeneration devices consisting of nonwoven filters and peripheral blood cells was investigated for wound healing. We previously found that human peripheral blood cells enhanced their production of growth factors, such as transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) and vascular endothelial growth factor, when they were captured on nonwoven filters. Cells on biodegradable filters were expected to serve as a local supply of growth factors and cell sources when they were placed in wounded skin.

Oxidized LDL (oxLDL) activates the angiotensin II type 1 receptor by binding to the lectin-like oxLDL receptor.

The angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1) is a 7-transmembrane domain GPCR that when activated by its ligand angiotensin II, generates signaling events promoting vascular dysfunction and the development of cardiovascular disease. Here, we show that the single-transmembrane oxidized LDL (oxLDL) receptor (LOX-1) resides in proximity to AT1 on cell-surface membranes and that binding of oxLDL to LOX-1 can allosterically activate AT1-dependent signaling events. oxLDL-induced signaling events in human vascular endothelial cells were abolished by knockdown of AT1 and inhibited by AT1 blockade (ARB).
