After high Ca(2+) or ischemic-reperfusion, there was a contractile failure associated with a parallel downward shift of the linear relation between myocardial O(2) consumption per beat (VO(2)) and systolic pressure-volume area (PVA). This result indicated a decrease in VO(2) for total Ca(2+) handling in E-C coupling.

Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) form networks that are widely distributed within the submucosal (ICC-SM), intra-muscular (ICC-IM, ICC-DMP) and inter-muscular layers (ICC-MY) of the gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the internal anal sphincter. The ICC generate spontaneously active pacemaker currents that may be recorded as plateau and slow potentials.

The rectal distension-evoked reflex rectal (R-R) contractions and internal anal sphincter (R-IAS) relaxations in guinea pigs were generated through the extrinsic sacral excitatory nerve pathway (pelvic nerves) and the intrinsic cholinergic excitatory and nitrergic inhibitory nerve pathways. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether a prokinetic benzamide, mosapride, enhances the R-R and R-IAS reflexes mediated via 5-HT4 receptors in the guinea pig. The mechanical activities of the R and IAS were recorded with a balloon connected to a pressure transducer and a strain gauge force transducer in the anesthetized guinea pig with intact spinal-intestinal pathways.

We hypothesized that cardiac dysfunction in hypothyroidism is mainly caused by the impairment of Ca(2+) handling in excitation-contraction coupling. To prove this hypothesis, we investigated left ventricular (LV) mechanical work and energetics without interference of preload and afterload in an excised, blood-perfused whole heart preparation from hypothyroid rats. We found that LV inotropism and lusitropism were significantly depressed, and these depressions were causally related to decreased myocardial oxygen consumption for Ca(2+) handling and for basal metabolism.

The aim of the present study was to analyze the neuromodulation of rectoanal reflex activity by lumbar sympathetic nerves in guinea pigs. The mechanical activities of the rectum were recorded with a balloon connected to a pressure transducer, and those of the internal anal sphincter (IAS) were recorded with a custom-made strain gauge force transducer. Recently a large number of special smooth muscle cells corresponding to c-kit immunoreactive cells were found in the proximal colon of the guinea pig.
