Follicular dendritic cell-secreted protein (FDC-SP) is produced by follicular dendritic cells, periodontal ligament and junctional epithelium (JE). JE exists immediately apical to the bottom of the pocket and binds enamel with hemidesmosomes to protect the periodontium from bacterial infection. To analyze the transcriptional regulation of the FDC-SP gene by interleukin-6 (IL-6), we performed real-time PCR, Western blotting, immunofluorescence, luciferase (LUC) assays, gel mobility shift and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays using Ca9-22 and Sa3 gingival epithelial cells.

Purpose: Examination of patients to detect periodontal disease is important for diagnosis and treatment planning, and accuracy of examination may be improved if salivary components can be applied for diagnosis. Leucine-rich α2 glycoprotein (LRG) is expressed in the serum of patients with inflammatory diseases, and salivary LRG may be applicable to the diagnosis of periodontal disease.

Methods: To evaluate the effect of initial periodontal therapy (IPT) on clinical periodontal parameters such as probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP), periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA), periodontal epithelial surface area (PESA), saliva samples were collected before and after IPT from 63 patients with chronic periodontitis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the activity and sleep patterns of patients with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) using actigraphy, which is a tool that measures movement similar to a wristwatch.
  • Researchers found that while subjective reports of pain and sleep issues were well correlated, actigraphy results showed no objective link between activity levels and these subjective experiences.
  • The authors suggest that the mismatch between subjective and objective data could be due to specific characteristics of PHN, limitations of actigraphy in tracking sedentary lifestyles, or a phenomenon called activity misperception, where individuals may misjudge their own activity levels.

Telomere maintenance requires the extension of the G-rich telomeric repeat strand by telomerase and the fill-in synthesis of the C-rich strand by Polα/primase. At telomeres, Polα/primase is bound to Ctc1/Stn1/Ten1 (CST), a single-stranded DNA-binding complex. Like mutations in telomerase, mutations affecting CST-Polα/primase result in pathological telomere shortening and cause a telomere biology disorder, Coats plus (CP).

In Japan, the use of frame retardants [tris(2,3-dibromopropyl)phosphate: TDBPP and bis(2,3-dibromopropyl)phosphate: BDBPP] in several household textile products is banned under the "Act on the Control of Household Products Containing Harmful Substances." As the official analytical methods for testing these substances have not been revised for over 42 years, several issues such as the using of harmful reagents, have been pointed out. Therefore, we developed a new method to revise the official method in our previous study.

Telomerase adds G-rich telomeric repeats to the 3' ends of telomeres, counteracting telomere shortening caused by loss of telomeric 3' overhangs during leading-strand DNA synthesis ('the end-replication problem'). Here we report a second end-replication problem that originates from the incomplete duplication of the C-rich telomeric repeat strand (C-strand) by lagging-strand DNA synthesis. This problem is resolved by fill-in synthesis mediated by polymerase α-primase bound to Ctc1-Stn1-Ten1 (CST-Polα-primase).

Purpose: Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) has demonstrated beneficial effects on wound healing following surgery. However, the effects of recombinant human fibroblast growth factor 2 (rhFGF-2) in periodontal regeneration therapy have not been extensively studied. This retrospective study was conducted to compare the wound healing outcomes of the modified papilla preservation technique (mPPT) between EMD and rhFGF-2 therapies.

Purpose: After tooth extraction, preservation of the alveolar ridge by socket grafting attenuates bone resorption. Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) and SP7/Osterix (OSX) are transcription factors playing an important role in osteoblast differentiation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of carbonate apatite (COAp) on osteoblast-related gene and protein expression after socket grafting.

Objective: There are few valid indicators of oral infection owing to the complexity of pathogenic factors in oral diseases. Salivary markers are very useful for scrutinizing the symptoms of disease. To provide a reliable and useful predictive indicator of infection for opportunistic pathogens in individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those with periodontal diseases and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), this study examines opportunistic pathogens such as and staphylococci and macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) and CA125/MUC16 in saliva.

The morphology of the internal carotid artery (ICA) bifurcation is increasingly being recognized as the cause of atherosclerosis and vulnerable plaque leading to cerebral infarction. In this study, we investigated the relationship between carotid bifurcation angle and carotid plaque volume evaluated using black blood magnetic resonance imaging (BB-MRI). Among the 90 patients who underwent revascularization for atherosclerotic symptomatic carotid stenosis between April 2016 and October 2022 using BB-MRI, carotid plaque was evaluated in 57 patients.

Although nobiletin (Nob) is a promising functional food component in view of its multifaceted physiological activity, the metabolism of this flavonoid remains underexplored. Herein, we examine the pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution of orally ingested Nob in rats, focusing on the six monodemethylnobiletin (MDNob) isomers as the main Nob metabolites. Two of these metabolites, namely, 6-MDNob and 8-MDNob, are chemically prepared for the first time, and a method for the simultaneous determination of all six MDNobs is developed.

Purpose: Exosomes are membrane vesicles that are present in body fluids and contain proteins, lipids, and microRNA (miRNA). Periodontal tissue examinations assess the degree of periodontal tissue destruction according to the probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), bleeding on probing, and X-ray examinations. However, the accurate evaluation of the prognosis of periodontitis is limited.

In an aging society, the number of femoral fractures is increasing, as well as the incidence of periprosthetic fractures. These secondary fractures are often difficult to fixate stably because of the osteoporotic bone and the existence of the former implant. Herein, we present two cases of secondary femoral shaft fractures after osteosyntheses for distal femur fractures with polyaxial locking plates (Non-Contact-Bridging Distal Femur, NCB-DF, ZimmerBIOMET, Winterthur, Switzerland).

Junction epithelium (JE) is located apical to the bottom of the gingival sulcus and binds enamel to hemidesmosomes to protect the periodontal tissue from bacterial infection. Function of odontogenic ameloblast-associated protein (ODAM) is suggested by its expression sites (JE and maturation stage ameloblasts) to be involved in the adhesion between the JE and enamel, and odontogenesis. To analyze the changes in ODAM gene and protein expressions in inflamed gingiva, Ca9-22 gingival epithelial cells were stimulated with 1 ng/ml interleukin-1β (IL-1β) for 3-24 h, and ODAM mRNA and protein levels were analyzed by real-time PCR and Western blotting.
