Article Synopsis
  • Recovery Colleges (RCs) are special communities that help people recover from mental health issues through learning, but their success in different cultures is not well studied.
  • Researchers looked at 169 RCs from various countries to see how cultural differences affect how well they operate.
  • They found that RCs work best in cultures that are more individualistic and indulgent, but it's important to consider other cultures to make these programs better for everyone around the world.

The radioisotope thorium-229 (Th) is renowned for its extraordinarily low-energy, long-lived nuclear first-excited state. This isomeric state can be excited by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) lasers and Th has been proposed as a reference transition for ultra-precise nuclear clocks. To assess the feasibility and performance of the nuclear clock concept, time-controlled excitation and depopulation of the Th isomer are imperative.

Article Synopsis
  • Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) influences atrial fibrillation (AF) but its role in postoperative AF (POAF) is not well understood; this study examines how EAT relates to POAF in cardiovascular surgery patients.
  • Out of 53 patients, 34% experienced POAF within a week after surgery, but no major differences in EAT profiles were found between patients with and without POAF.
  • Key findings include that higher levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) mRNA are linked to increased POAF risk, while larger adipocyte sizes correlate inversely with POAF onset; mitochondrial OXPHOS was unrelated to POAF but associated with secretory activities and adipocyte

Purpose: To evaluate midterm results of whether the strategy to occlude target lumbar arteries using n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (nBCA) injection during endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) reduced the incidence of Type II endoleak (T2EL) after EVAR.

Materials And Methods: Between 2013 and 2020, 187 patients underwent EVAR; 106 in the treatment group received nBCA injection during EVAR, whereas 81 in the historical control group did not. The incidence of T2EL at 7 days, need for reintervention, and post-EVAR aneurysmal shrinkage were compared between the groups.

Objectives: Previous studies have indicated that good human relationships contribute significantly to subjective well-being. We recently focused on two important ways of developing good interpersonal relationships: positive empathy, which focuses on the happiness of other people, and trait forgivingness, a tendency to forgive others. We novelly conducted an exploratory genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify candidate gene polymorphisms associated with positive empathy and trait forgivingness among the Japanese.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate midterm outcomes of our novel strategy of postoperative initial 2-day blood pressure management (BPM) after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for the prevention of subsequent type II endoleak (T2EL) in a single-center series.

Methods: Between 2008 and 2014, 137 patients who underwent EVAR for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) were reviewed. Starting from 2013, the mean blood pressure was maintained between 75 and 90 mmHg for the initial 24 hours after EVAR followed by systolic pressure controlled below 120 mmHg during the next 24 hours in the treatment group (n = 76).

Background: The prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with vascular invasion is extremely poor, especially in patients with tumor thrombus (TT) of the inferior vena cava (IVC), which is an oncological emergency with a high risk of sudden death due to TT extension or migration. Herein, we describe a case of HCC with TT of the IVC that rapidly extended into the right atrium (RA), in which right hepatectomy was performed under cardiopulmonary bypass.

Case Presentation: A 64-year-old man was diagnosed with HCC with IVC TT, and right hepatic lobectomy was scheduled.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the midterm results of zone 2 thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for uncomplicated type B aortic dissection (TBAD) by measuring the intra-false lumen pressure (IFLP) during TEVAR.

Methods: Fifteen patients (9 men; mean age, 57 years) who underwent zone 2 TEVAR for uncomplicated TBAD were reviewed. Delta systolic pressure (defined as the difference between systemic pressure and IFLP) was measured before and after primary entry closure, and aortic remodeling and thrombo-occlusion of the false lumen (FL) were evaluated 12 months after TEVAR at 5 different levels of the aorta.

The application of silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) technology for weak-light detection at a single photon level has expanded thanks to its better photon detection efficiency in comparison to a conventional photomultiplier tube (PMT). SiPMs with large detection area have recently become commercially available, enabling applications where the photon flux is low both temporarily and spatially. On the other hand, several drawbacks exist in the usage of SiPMs such as a higher dark count rate, many readout channels, slow response time, and optical crosstalk; therefore, users need to carefully consider the trade-offs.

Previous studies in cultural psychology have suggested that when assessing a target person's emotion, East Asians are more likely to incorporate the background figure's emotion into the judgment of the target's emotion compared to North Americans. The objective of this study was to further examine cultural variation in emotion perception within a culturally diverse population that is representative of Canada's multicultural society. We aimed to see whether East-Asian Canadians tended to keep holistic tendencies of their heritage culture regarding emotion perception.

The current research examines cross-cultural differences in people's daily stress experiences and the role of social orientations in explaining their experiences. Using a situation sampling method, Study 1 collected European Canadian and Japanese undergraduates' examples of stressful interpersonal and non-interpersonal situations they experienced, measuring participants' perception of the intensity and frequency of each type of situation. Studies 2 and 3 examined the effects of culture on participants' reports of stress symptoms under the situations.

Prior research has found that East Asians are less willing than Westerners to seek social support in times of need. What factors account for this cultural difference? Whereas previous research has examined the mediating effect of relational concern, we predicted that empathic concern, which refers to feeling sympathy and concern for people in need and varies by individuals from different cultures, would promote support seeking. We tested the prediction in two studies.

Previous studies in population genetics have proposed that the Y-chromosomal (Y-DNA) haplogroup D ancestor likely originated from Africa. The haplogroup D branch next started Out-of-Africa migration, rapidly expanded across Eurasia, and later diversified in East Asia. Y-DNA haplogroup D-M55, one of the branches of haplogroup D, is only found in modern Japanese males, suggesting that individuals with Y-DNA haplogroup D migrated from the Eurasian continent.

We propose and study a method of optical crosstalk suppression for silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) using optical filters. We demonstrate that attaching absorptive visible bandpass filters to the SiPM can substantially reduce the optical crosstalk. Measurements suggest that the absorption of near infrared light is important to achieve this suppression.

Objectives: We investigated the validity of the surgical strategy for aortic arch aneurysm depending on the patient's condition.

Methods: Between 2014 and 2019, 70 patients underwent total arch replacement (TAR) and 14 patients underwent fenestrated thoracic endovascular aortic repair( fTEVAR) for aortic arch aneurysm. We selected the surgical strategy on the basis of the patient's condition with or without frailty and if surgical risks including cancer or a respiratory condition precluded open surgery.

We report on the ultrastructural features of the aortic wall in a patient with Kommerell diverticulum. A 70-year-old woman with a right aortic arch, aberrant left subclavian artery, and Kommerell diverticulum underwent a successful total arch replacement plus the frozen elephant trunk procedure with anatomical left subclavian artery reconstruction. Small pieces of the ascending aorta, distal arch, right common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery were investigated ultrastructurally.

Surgical indication and treatment for patients with Kommerell diverticulum and aberrant subclavian artery are still not well established. A patient with esophageal and tracheal compression resulting from these anatomical abnormalities was successfully treated with a hybrid approach of total arch replacement, frozen elephant trunk technique, aberrant left subclavian artery transection, and left subclavian artery reconstruction through median sternotomy. Compressive symptoms were relieved without resecting the enlarged diverticulum.

Early-life environments have been associated with various social behaviors, including trust, in late adolescence and adulthood. Given that the oxytocin receptor gene polymorphism (OXTR rs53576) moderates the impact of childhood experience on social behaviors, in the present study, we examined the main effect of childhood adversity through a self-report measure and its interactions with OXTR rs53576 on general trust among 203 Japanese and 200 European Canadian undergraduate students. After controlling for the effect of culture, the results indicated that childhood adversity had a negative association with general trust, and that OXTR rs53576 moderated the impact of childhood adversity on general trust.

Henrich et al. (2010) highlighted the necessity of broadening the range of regions for cross-cultural investigation in their seminal paper "The weirdest people in the world." They criticize the current psychological framework for relying dominantly on American undergraduate students for their participant database, and state that there is a risk associated with investigating human nature by focusing solely on a unique population.

Anomalous origin of the right coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ARCAPA) is a rare occurrence that requires surgical repair, typically via cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). In this study, we present the case of a patient with ARCAPA with a high risk of cerebral infarction and left main trunk stenosis. However, because of the high risk of cerebral infarction, CPB was no longer an option during surgical intervention.

Cultural psychology has great potential to expand its research frameworks to more applied research fields in business such as marketing and organizational studies while going beyond basic psychological processes to more complex social practices. In fact, the number of cross-cultural business studies has grown constantly over the past 20 years. Nonetheless, the theoretical and methodological closeness between cultural psychology and these business-oriented studies has not been fully recognized by scholars in cultural psychology.

A primary aorto-duodenal fistula (ADF), a rare, spontaneous development of a communication between the aorta and duodenum, is a disastrous complication of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. A 73-year-old patient with primary ADF underwent emergent endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), followed by staged omentopexy, without removing a stent graft (SG). The patient received long-term treatment with antibiotics, and there has been no evidence of infection during a follow-up period of three years.
