Background/objectives: Positive pancreatic juice cytology (PJC) is an important finding when considering surgical resection in patients with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN); however, guidelines do not recommend endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for PJC. This study aimed to clarify the findings worthy of adding PJC for diagnosing high-grade dysplasia (HGD) and invasive carcinoma (IC) in patients with IPMN.

Methods: Patients with IPMN who underwent preoperative PJC and surgical resection at Hiroshima University Hospital were enrolled, and the diagnostic yield of malignant IPMN based on PJC and clinical and imaging findings and the incidence of post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP) were retrospectively analyzed.

Background: Low-keV virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs) of dual-energy computed tomography (CT) enhances iodine contrast for detecting small arteries like the Adamkiewicz artery (AKA), but image noise can be problematic. Deep-learning image reconstruction (DLIR) effectively reduces noise without sacrificing image quality.

Purpose: To evaluate whether DLIR on low-keV VMIs of dual-energy CT scans improves the visualization of the AKA.

Automation and quality control (QC) are critical in manufacturing safe and effective cell and gene therapy products. However, current QC methods, reliant on molecular staining, pose difficulty in in-line testing and can increase manufacturing costs. Here we demonstrate the potential of using label-free ghost cytometry (LF-GC), a machine learning-driven, multidimensional, high-content, and high-throughput flow cytometry approach, in various stages of the cell therapy manufacturing processes.

  • Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is a minimally invasive technique used for removing thoracic lesions in children, including mediastinal tumors, under specific conditions.
  • A case involving a 9-year-old girl with a mediastinal teratoma adhered to the superior vena cava was successfully treated using assisted VATS, which involved a small incision and video guidance.
  • The patient had a smooth recovery, with no recurrence of the tumor after one year, indicating that the combination of this surgical method and incision approach could be beneficial for similar pediatric cases.

  • This study investigates the hemodynamics (mean pressure gradient and fractional flow reserve) at residual dissections after drug-coated balloon angioplasty for the superficial femoral artery, addressing a gap in knowledge about this treatment.
  • It analyzes 59 cases of residual SFA dissection, categorizing them into six types and measuring pressure changes and blood flow reserve following the procedure.
  • Results indicate that low-grade dissections (types A and B) do not significantly impact hemodynamic outcomes, suggesting that additional stenting may not be necessary in these cases, while further research is needed for higher-grade dissections (type C).

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated how the timing of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) affects peritoneal lavage cytology (CY) outcomes in patients with resectable pancreatic body-tail cancer.
  • Among 129 patients, 12% tested positive for CY, with lymph node metastasis being the only significant risk factor identified.
  • The timing of EUS-FNA, whether within 14 days or 15 days and beyond, did not show a significant difference in CY positivity rates, suggesting EUS-FNA timing might not influence outcomes.

Objectives: The 2019 Global Vascular Guidelines recommended open bypass for patients at average risk with greater limb severity and anatomical complexity. However, the outcomes of tibial and pedal bypass (TPB) are inferior to those of above-the-knee surgical revascularization. This may be due to the technical difficulty and need for development of skills to perform TPB.

Background: Endovascular treatment (EVT) is recommended for superficial femoral artery (SFA) lesions, and good results have been reported after implantation of drug-eluting stents (DES) for SFA. However, the major concern after implantation is acute thrombosis during the follow-up period, resulting in major amputation and major adverse limb events. In this study, we examined the incidence and outcome of acute thrombosis after DES implantation in the SFA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the link between epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) characteristics and aortic valve calcification (AVC) using CT scans in 43 patients before heart surgery.
  • Results showed that EAT density was positively correlated with the quantity of inflammatory macrophages and osteocalcin-positive cells, indicating a relationship between inflammation in EAT and AVC severity.
  • The findings suggest that higher EAT density, along with certain immune cell counts, may indicate more severe aortic valve degeneration, highlighting the importance of EAT in cardiovascular health.
