Cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) is a late-onset, autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder caused by biallelic AAGGG/ACAGG repeat expansion (AAGGG-exp/ACAGG-exp) in RFC1. The recent identification of patients with CANVAS exhibiting compound heterozygosity for AAGGG-exp and truncating variants supports the loss-of-function of RFC1 in CANVAS patients. We investigated the pathological changes in 2 autopsied patients with CANVAS harboring biallelic ACAGG-exp and AAGGG-exp.

In this work, we developed a nickel-catalyzed transfer hydrogenolysis of 1-aryloxy-3-amino-2-propanols, which is a model compound of an amine-cured bisphenol A (BPA)-based epoxy resin. Mechanistic investigation revealed that the hydroxy group acts as the hydrogen donor to generate α-aryloxy ketone, which undergoes an unprecedented remote-concerted oxidative addition of the C(sp)-O bond as suggested by DFT calculation. Successful application of this method was demonstrated by the degradation of a diamine-cured BPA-based epoxy resin, in which BPA was directly recovered from the resin.

miR-146a, a microRNA (miRNA) that regulates inflammatory responses, plays an important role in many inflammatory diseases. Although an in vitro study had suggested that miR-146a is involved in abnormal inflammatory response, being a critical factor in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), in vivo evidence of its pathogenic role in COPD remains limited. Eight-week-old male B6(FVB)-Mir146tm1.

Background: Trisomy 18 syndrome, also known as Edwards syndrome, is a chromosomal trisomy. The syndrome has historically been considered lethal owing to its poor prognosis, and palliative care was primarily indicated for trisomy 18 neonates. Although there have been several reports on the improvement of survival outcomes in infants with trisomy 18 syndrome through neonatal intensive care, few studies have compared the impact of neonatal intensive care on survival outcomes with that of non-intensive care.

Most pancreatic cancers are pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (PDAC). Spherical morphology formed in three-dimensional (3D) cultures and the effects of anticancer drugs differ between epithelial and mesenchymal PDAC cell lines. In the human pancreas, cancer cells form 3D tumors, migrate to adjacent tissues, and metastasize to other organs.

  • - Tecovirimat's role in treating mpox is still not well-understood, prompting a study in Japan to assess its effectiveness and safety across various patient demographics from June 2022 to April 2023.
  • - In the study, 19 male patients (average age 38.5 years), primarily with severe disease and many HIV positive, were treated with tecovirimat; results showed that 60% had negative virus tests in their skin lesions within two weeks, with no severe side effects reported.
  • - The findings suggest that starting tecovirimat treatment early can likely shorten the time the virus is detectable, especially in HIV-infected patients, who tend to shed the virus longer, raising the risk of transmission

Article Synopsis
  • Radiation therapy can cause late adverse events due to difficulties in adhering to dose constraints for normal tissue, with spacers potentially reducing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues during gynecologic brachytherapy.
  • Variability in tissue resistance affects the placement of spacers, with different tissues offering unique characteristics that can be utilized in surgical procedures, such as pelvic organ prolapse surgery and radical hysterectomies.
  • Effective spacer injection can improve patient safety and therapy effectiveness, requiring precision and proper anatomical understanding during administration.

SYK-6 can assimilate various lignin-derived aromatic compounds, including a β-5-type (phenylcoumaran-type) dimer, dehydrodiconiferyl alcohol (DCA). SYK-6 converts DCA to a stilbene-type intermediate via multiple reaction steps and then to vanillin and 5-formylferulic acid (FFA). Here, we first elucidated the catabolic pathway of FFA, which is the only unknown pathway in DCA catabolism.

Background: Accumulating evidence suggests that expression levels of tumor-infiltrating (TI) cells may play a prognostic role in patients with esophageal cancer who have undergone esophagectomy. However, its effect on patients undergoing neoadjuvant docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (DCF) therapy followed by esophagectomy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the prognostic impact of TI cells in patients who underwent esophagectomy following neoadjuvant DCF therapy.

During the long-term storage of cells, it is necessary to inhibit ice crystal formation by adding cryoprotectants. Non-cell-permeable cryoprotectants have high osmotic pressure which dehydrates cells, indirectly suppressing intracellular ice crystal formation. However, the high osmotic pressure and dehydration often damage cells.

Periodontal disease is one of the most common dental health problems in dogs. Clinical studies in humans have shown that aged garlic extract (AGE), which contains stable and water-soluble sulfur-containing bioactive compounds, improves the symptoms of periodontal diseases. Our previous study demonstrated that oral administration of AGE in healthy Beagle dogs at 90 mg/kg/day for 12 weeks had no adverse effects such as hemolytic anemia, which is well known to occur as a result of ingestion of species, including onions and garlic, in dogs.

Purpose: Dynamic morphological changes in the chromosome and cytoskeleton occur in mammals and humans during early embryonic development, and abnormalities such as embryonic chromosomal aneuploidy occur when development does not proceed normally. Visualization of the intracellular organelles and cytoskeleton allows elucidation of the development of early mammalian embryos. The behavior of the DNA and cytoskeleton in early mammalian embryos has conventionally been observed by injecting target molecule mRNAs, incorporating a fluorescent substance-expressing gene, into embryos.
