At present, the molecular mechanisms driving the progression and metastasis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remain largely uncharacterized. The activation of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling in the tumor microenvironment has been observed in various types of cancer and has been implicated their progression by enhancing the migration and invasion of epithelial cancer cells. However, its specific roles in the oral cancer progression remain unexplored.

Background And Objective: Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare neoplastic disease associated with the functional tumour suppressor genes TSC1 and TSC2 and causes structural destruction in the lungs, which could potentially increase the risk of lung cancer. However, this relationship remains unclear because of the rarity of the disease.

Methods: We investigated the relative risk of developing lung cancer among patients diagnosed with LAM between 2001 and 2022 at a single high-volume centre in Japan, using data from the Japanese Cancer Registry as the reference population.

99m Tc-3,3-diphosphono-1,2-propanedicarboxylic acid (DPD) scintigraphy and 99m Tc-pyrophosphate (PYP) scintigraphy are highly sensitive modalities for imaging both myocardial and extracardiac amyloid transthyretin in patients with wild-type transthyretin (ATTRwt) amyloidosis. "Loss of bone signal" on planar imaging of 99m Tc-DPD scintigraphy, in which the tracer uptake in bone is obscured by marked tracer uptake in the overlying skeletal muscles, is reported. However, this phenomenon has not yet been documented on 99m Tc-PYP scintigraphy.

Purpose: Auto-antibodies (auto-abs) to type I interferons (IFNs) have been identified in patients with life-threatening coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), suggesting that the presence of auto-abs may be a risk factor for disease severity. We therefore investigated the mechanism underlying COVID-19 exacerbation induced by auto-abs to type I IFNs.

Methods: We evaluated plasma from 123 patients with COVID-19 to measure auto-abs to type I IFNs.

Magnetic refrigeration technology can achieve higher energy efficiency based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE). However, the practical application of MCE materials is hindered by their poor mechanical properties, making them challenging to process into devices. Conventional strengthening strategies usually lead to a trade-off with refrigeration capacity reduction.

A traceless site-selective conjugation method, "AJICAP-M", was developed for native antibodies at sites using Fc-affinity peptides, focusing on Lys248 or Lys288. It produces antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) with consistent drug-to-antibody ratios, enhanced stability, and simplified manufacturing. Comparative in vivo assessment demonstrated AJICAP-M's superior stability over traditional ADCs.

Missense mutations in certain small envelope proteins diminish the efficacy of antibodies. Consequently, tracking the incidence and types of vaccine-escape mutations (VEMs) was crucial both before and after the introduction of universal hepatitis B vaccination in Japan in 2016. In this study, we isolated hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA from 58 of 169 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive blood samples from Japanese blood donors and determined the nucleotide sequence encoding the small envelope protein.

Vitamin D deficiency during infancy has been associated with increased bone turnover rate and bone mineral loss. However, few studies have examined bone turnover markers (BTMs) for both bone formation and resorption in infants with vitamin D deficiency. Here, we analyzed serum concentrations of 25OHD, intact parathormone (iPTH), and BTMs including total alkaline phosphatase (ALP), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoform 5b (TRACP-5b), and serum type I collagen N-telopeptide (NTx) as well as basic clinical characteristics of 456 infants (626 samples) aged less than 12 mo born at Saitama City Hospital, Japan (latitude 35.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates cell-cell interactions in colorectal cancer (CRC) to understand how adenomas progress to sporadic CRC, aiming to improve patient survival rates.
  • By using spatial transcriptomics on early and advanced CRC cases, the researchers identified key interactions between cancer cells and regulatory T cells (Tregs) that may lead to immune suppression in the tumor microenvironment.
  • Findings highlight midkine (MDK) as a critical signaling molecule involved in these interactions and indicate that higher MDK/SDC4 levels are linked to poorer survival outcomes in CRC patients, suggesting a potential target for early diagnosis and treatment.
