Article Synopsis
  • Three new strains of moderately anaerobic, thermophilic bacteria were isolated from shellfish in Japan, identified as belonging to the genus Symbiobacterium with high similarity to the known species Symbiobacterium thermophilum.
  • * The strains exhibit unique characteristics such as optimal growth at temperatures of 55-60 °C, the ability to reduce nitrate, and the formation of endospore-like structures.
  • * Based on their distinct morphological and genetic traits, the new bacteria are proposed as three novel species: Symbiobacterium ostreiconchae, Symbiobacterium turbinis, and Symbiobacterium terraclitae, along with the classification of a new family named Symbiobacteriaceae.

We study the ecological distribution of a unique syntrophic bacterium, Symbiobacterium thermophilum, and related bacteria. In this study, we found that they were frequently obtained from seashells and several marine samples. Symbiobacterium also grew from sterilized oyster shells incubated undersea for 2 or 3 months on the coast of Shimoda, Shizuoka, Japan.
