We encountered a case of hepatic malperfusion resulting from central repair for Stanford type A acute aortic dissection (AAD). A 78-year-old woman had AAD, for which ascending aortic repair was performed. Hepatic malperfusion developed 3 days postoperatively.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFTo understand the molecular basis for the different self-association and lipoprotein preferences of apolipoprotein (apo) E isoforms, we compared the effects of progressive truncation of the C-terminal domain in human apoE3 and apoE4 on their lipid-free structure and lipid binding properties. A VLDL/HDL distribution assay demonstrated that apoE3 binds much better than apoE4 to HDL 3, whereas both isoforms bind similarly to VLDL. Removal of the C-terminal helical regions spanning residues 273-299 weakened the ability of both isoforms to bind to lipoproteins; this led to the elimination of the isoform lipoprotein preference, indicating that the C-terminal helices mediate the lipoprotein selectivity of apoE3 and apoE4 isoforms.

Recent studies have suggested that highly amyloidogenic Abeta(1-42) is a cause of neuronal damage leading to AD pathogenesis and that monomeric Abeta(1-40) has less neurotoxicity than Abeta(1-42). We found that mouse and human brain homogenates exhibit an enzyme activity converting Abeta(1-42) to Abeta(1-40) and that the major part of this converting activity is mediated by the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE).

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe oxidation reactions of hydroquinones, 2-naphthols, or 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol efficiently occurred by catalysis with alumina-supported copper(II) sulfate to give the corresponding benzoquinones, 1,1'-bi-2-naphthols, and 4,4'-diphenoquinone, respectively, in good yields. The synthetic potentiality of the catalytic reactions was demonstrated by easy isolation of the final products using only filtration and solvent evaporation as well as by application to large-scale syntheses of the benzoquinones and binaphthols. The catalysis with alumina-supported copper(II) sulfate was also applied to the oxidative intramolecular coupling of 5,5'-diacenaphthene to the corresponding perylene compound.
