[Edith Magalhães Fraenkel: the greatest figure of Brazilian nursing].

The present study aimed to describe and analyze the career of Edith Magalhães Fraenkel and her important legacy to Brazilian nursing. The methodology chosen was a documentary analysis of her areas of participation based on documents of the Historical Cultural Center of Iberian-American School of Nursing of the University of São Paulo (Universidade de São Paulo, USP) and in the Rectory of the same University. The following thematic topics were categorized: preparation for leadership, moving to São Paulo, creation of the School of Nursing of USP, event organization, and unique developments at the end of her career.

[The symbolic elements in the Anna Nery monument in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil].

The objective of this study was to examine the symbolic elements of the statue and memorial plaques in honor of Anna Nery offered by the Brazilian Red Cross, as a symbolic effect on society. The documentary analysis was performed mainly through institutional press records and images, which were interpreted by means of the notions of object representation and object bodyly hexis. Results showed that the object representations in the statue of Anna Nery lacked a representation of her articulated to her bodyly hexis, which led to the interpretation of the monument--both the statue and the four narrative plaques--as a tribute to the Brazilian woman.

The profile of EEUSP graduates of the stricto sensu program in nursing management.

The objectives of the present study were to identify and discuss on the profile of the graduates form the stricto sensu program in Nursing Administration/Management of the University of São Paulo School of Nursing, from October 2008 to June 2011, regarding the knowledge areas the graduates worked on during their master and doctoral program. This is an exploratory, descriptive, retrospective study, using documental analysis. The study population consisted of 250 graduates, 169 of which were masters and 81 doctorates.

The professionalization of Brazilian nursing in the written media of the end of the nineteenth century: a gender analysis.

Unlabelled: The object is the relationship between the professionalization of Brazilian nursing and women, in the broadcasting of news about the creation of the Professional School of Nurses, in the light of gender.

Aims: to discuss the linkage of women to the beginning of the professionalization of Brazilian nursing following the circumstances and evidence of the creation of the Professional School of Nurses analyzed from the perspective of gender. The news articles were analyzed from the viewpoint of Cultural History, founded in the gender concept of Joan Scott and in the History of Women.

[Prejudice in nursing: perception of nurses educated in different decades].

The objective of this qualitative study, of a historical-social nature, was to learn and understand the perceptions of a group of nurses, who graduated in different decades, regarding the prejudice and forms of coping involved in choosing the profession, during their university studies, or in professional practice. Oral Life History and content analysis were used. The EEUSP Research Ethics Committee approved this study.

[Nurses' perception about diseases that are treated by acupuncture].

The objective of this study was to identify and analyze nurses' perceptions about diseases that are treated by acupuncture, taking into consideration: (1) the diseases of nurses who had received acupuncture treatment; (2) nurses' diseases which might be treated by acupuncture; (3) suggestions of diseases treatable by acupuncture. This exploratory study was performed with 33 nurses working at 11 health units in southeast São Paulo; places in which acupuncture treatment was available. [The trajectory of a nurse: Neuza Aparecida Ramos].

This historical-social study aims at: contributing to the data bank of the Historical-Cultural Center of Iberian-American Nursing through incorporating another recorded interview with a nurse as well as rescuing a portion of the State of Parana Nursing History; and helping in its dissemination. Life oral history was utilized as this has facilitated to know the trajectory followed by the nurse Neuza Aparecida Ramos, as a person and as a professional. Her life oral history was collected through an interview which has captured her living and working experiences as well as her leadership in the educational field.

[The University of São Paulo, School of Nursing and the Brazilian Nursing professional identity reconfiguration].

This study intends to contribute for reflection around Brazilian nursing professional identity. For this purpose the subject was rescued from images built up on the knowledge related to identity, nursing professionalization and the blacks in Brazil. It is considered that representations of native inferiority, raised for blacks, have favored the exclusion of black women from the professional nursing education.

[Ethical occurrences involving nursing staff and professionals: a quantitative approach].

This study aimed at identifying characteristics of ethical occurrences related to nursing care in a large private hospital in the city of São Paulo. There were 190 occurrences reported to the hospital's Nursing Ethical Committee (NEC) between 1995 and 2004. Most occurrences caused no damages to the patient, the health institution, the nursing staff or the professional involved.

[Nurses precribing medications: possibilities and perspectives].

Efforts to ensure the implementation of nurses prescribing medications have been a challenge in different parts of the world. This paper aimed at describing how this issue has been accomplished in some countries and reflecting about nursing professional legislation in Brazil in relation to this subject. Data from the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the Ministry of Health Programs on Public Health show the need for a stronger political action by nurses and their institutional representations in order to create a legislation to better define their scope and functions in relation to prescription of medicines.

[Sister Tereza Notarnicola].

This paper aims at identifying the motivations which moved Sister Tereza toward nursing and her insertion into Brazilian Nursing Association contributing to disseminate her history as an example of professional life and dedication to nursing. This is a social-historical study based on historical-methodological reference approach of Oral History of Life for data collection. Sister Tereza worked over 33 years for the benefit of all nurses.

Nursing history: reflections on teaching and research at undergraduate level.

This study aims to contribute to the discussion on the development of a specific research line on Nursing History. It concludes by addressing the current situation of nursing teaching in undergraduate courses, its persisting difficulties and growing possibilities of this yet so little explored field.

[Nursing records trajectory: a survey of national journals (1957-2005)].

This paper is an outcome of a survey on nursing records, made in 2005, through the University of São Paulo, School of Nursing, data basis called Perienf. It aimed at describing data according to categories and analyse themes most cited in the content of the nursing records. Content analysis by Bardin was utilized for this technical analysis of 51 selected texts from 1957 to 2005.

Ethical events in nursing: Daily activities of nurse managers and nursing ethics committee members.

This study aimed to understand the meaning of nurses' actions related to ethical occurrences involving nursing professionals. Data were collected through interviews with nurse managers and members of a Nursing Ethics Committee who experienced the phenomenon. Data were analyzed in the framework of social phenomenology.

[The University of São Paulo, School of Nursing's history of graduate program].

It reports the history of creation and development of the graduate program at this School, as well as participation the first group of advisers, since the creation of the masters' course in 1973. Research sources were documents and data registration at the Graduate Program's secretariat, publications, and also the living memory of some faculty members. Evolutions occurred with the creation of the doctoral program, the increasing of the study fields and its expansion to other institutions outside of the São Paulo State are presented as well as the identification of the nurse-pioneers doctors who they formed giving origin to the second generation of doctors in nursing, who in their turn formed other masters and doctors of the third generation, and so successively, conforming a true genealogical tree of masters and doctors

[Negligence: a risk factor in caring].

Descriptive and exploratory study with a quantitative approach involving hundred fourteen causes of nursing ethical occurrences (or infractions) between 1995-2001. The objectives of the study were to: 1) characterize the nursing professionals involved in ethical occurrences; 2) identify causes of mistakes made. Outcomes obtained showed that: a) nursing auxiliaries were responsible for the majority of ethical occurrences: b) the main cause of occurrences were negligence, followed by imprudence: c) the more frequent technical mistake observed was in the preparation and/or administration of medicines.

Historical and descriptive study with the objective to identify registered news about the Professional School of Nurses (PSN), currently Alfredo Pinto School of Nursing, in the mentioned journal and referred period. Methodology utilized was the documental analysis. The journal was regularly published and 1632 issues were examined, from that period of 32 years.

It describes the World Health Organization (WHO) in its historical background, pointing out the Brazilian participation in its foundation and some of the most relevant facts and events that preceded its creation.
