The present study aimed to describe and analyze the career of Edith Magalhães Fraenkel and her important legacy to Brazilian nursing. The methodology chosen was a documentary analysis of her areas of participation based on documents of the Historical Cultural Center of Iberian-American School of Nursing of the University of São Paulo (Universidade de São Paulo, USP) and in the Rectory of the same University. The following thematic topics were categorized: preparation for leadership, moving to São Paulo, creation of the School of Nursing of USP, event organization, and unique developments at the end of her career.

The objective of this study was to examine the symbolic elements of the statue and memorial plaques in honor of Anna Nery offered by the Brazilian Red Cross, as a symbolic effect on society. The documentary analysis was performed mainly through institutional press records and images, which were interpreted by means of the notions of object representation and object bodyly hexis. Results showed that the object representations in the statue of Anna Nery lacked a representation of her articulated to her bodyly hexis, which led to the interpretation of the monument--both the statue and the four narrative plaques--as a tribute to the Brazilian woman.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe objectives of the present study were to identify and discuss on the profile of the graduates form the stricto sensu program in Nursing Administration/Management of the University of São Paulo School of Nursing, from October 2008 to June 2011, regarding the knowledge areas the graduates worked on during their master and doctoral program. This is an exploratory, descriptive, retrospective study, using documental analysis. The study population consisted of 250 graduates, 169 of which were masters and 81 doctorates.

Aims: to discuss the linkage of women to the beginning of the professionalization of Brazilian nursing following the circumstances and evidence of the creation of the Professional School of Nurses analyzed from the perspective of gender. The news articles were analyzed from the viewpoint of Cultural History, founded in the gender concept of Joan Scott and in the History of Women.
The objective of this qualitative study, of a historical-social nature, was to learn and understand the perceptions of a group of nurses, who graduated in different decades, regarding the prejudice and forms of coping involved in choosing the profession, during their university studies, or in professional practice. Oral Life History and content analysis were used. The EEUSP Research Ethics Committee approved this study.

The objective of this study was to identify and analyze nurses' perceptions about diseases that are treated by acupuncture, taking into consideration: (1) the diseases of nurses who had received acupuncture treatment; (2) nurses' diseases which might be treated by acupuncture; (3) suggestions of diseases treatable by acupuncture. There were 190 occurrences reported to the hospital's Nursing Ethical Committee (NEC) between 1995 and 2004. This paper aimed at describing how this issue has been accomplished in some countries and reflecting about nursing professional legislation in Brazil in relation to this subject. Data from the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the Ministry of Health Programs on Public Health show the need for a stronger political action by nurses and their institutional representations in order to create a legislation to better define their scope and functions in relation to prescription of medicines.

It reports the history of creation and development of the graduate program at this School, as well as participation the first group of advisers, since the creation of the masters' course in 1973. Research sources were documents and data registration at the Graduate Program's secretariat, publications, and also the living memory of some faculty members. Evolutions occurred with the creation of the doctoral program, the increasing of the study fields and its expansion to other institutions outside of the São Paulo State are presented as well as the identification of the nurse-pioneers doctors who they formed giving origin to the second generation of doctors in nursing, who in their turn formed other masters and doctors of the third generation, and so successively, conforming a true genealogical tree of masters and doctors

The objectives of the study were to: 1) characterize the nursing professionals involved in ethical occurrences; 2) identify causes of mistakes made. Outcomes obtained showed that: a) nursing auxiliaries were responsible for the majority of ethical occurrences: b) the main cause of occurrences were negligence, followed by imprudence: c) the more frequent technical mistake observed was in the preparation and/or administration of medicines.
