We study the Plateau-Rayleigh instability of a soft viscoelastic solid layer coated on a rigid cylinder , a soft fibre with a rigid core. The onset of instability is examined using a linear stability analysis. We find that increasing the rigid cylinder radius or the stiffness of the layer reduces the growth rate of the fastest growing mode.

We study the static deformation of a soft solid layer coated on a rigid cylindrical fiber when an axisymmetric barrel-shaped droplet is embracing it. We found that elastic deformation increases with a decreasing rigid fiber radius.

A soft solid layer develops a ridge-like deformation below the contact line due to the pulling force of the liquid-air surface tension when a droplet is in contact with it. We investigate the growth and the decay of a viscoelastic wetting ridge. The global features, the ridge height, evolve with time scales corresponding to the relaxation of the viscoelastic material.

The droplet motion depends on the geometry of the cone, the surface wettability, the surface tension, the viscosity, and the droplet size. Here we study with experiments and numerical simulations, the formation, spontaneous motion, and the eventual merger, of multiple droplets on slender conical fibers as they interact with each other.

Vector-valued neural learning has emerged as a promising direction in deep learning recently. Traditionally, training data for neural networks (NNs) are formulated as a vector of scalars; however, its performance may not be optimal since associations among adjacent scalars are not modeled. In this article, we propose a new vector neural architecture called the Arbitrary BIlinear Product NN (ABIPNN), which processes information as vectors in each neuron, and the feedforward projections are defined using arbitrary bilinear products.

Assuming a slip boundary condition, in which the liquid slides against the solid, such an unphysical prediction is avoided. In this article, we present the results of experiments in which a contact line moves and where slip is a dominating and controllable factor.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe entrainment of air by advancing contact lines is studied by plunging a solid plate into a very viscous liquid. Above a threshold velocity, we observe the formation of an extended air film, typically 10 microns thick, which subsequently decays into air bubbles. Exploring a large range of viscous liquids, we find an unexpectedly weak dependence of entrainment speed on liquid viscosity, pointing towards a crucial role of the flow inside the air film.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe analyze the reversals of the large-scale flow in Rayleigh-Bénard convection both through particle image velocimetry flow visualization and direct numerical simulations of the underlying Boussinesq equations in a (quasi-) two-dimensional, rectangular geometry of aspect ratio 1. For medium Prandtl number there is a diagonal large-scale convection roll and two smaller secondary rolls in the two remaining corners diagonally opposing each other. These corner-flow rolls play a crucial role for the large-scale wind reversal: They grow in kinetic energy and thus also in size thanks to plume detachments from the boundary layers up to the time that they take over the main, large-scale diagonal flow, thus leading to reversal.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe report an experimental study of the three-dimensional spatial structure of the low-frequency temperature oscillations in a cylindrical Rayleigh-Bénard convection cell. Through simultaneous multipoint temperature measurements it is found that, contrary to the popular scenario, thermal plumes are emitted neither periodically nor alternately, but randomly and continuously, from the top and bottom plates. We further identify a new flow mode-the sloshing mode of the large-scale circulation (LSC).
