Introduction: Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) is a severe form of illness caused by with high morbidity and mortality rate in the general population, particularly in children <5 years of age, adults ≥65 years of age and the immunocompromised. As known, pneumococcal vaccination lowers the risk of IPD so the aim of this study was to investigate whether the introduction of pneumococcal vaccination has influenced the incidence and mortality of IPD in adults in Croatia.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective study was conducted among adult patients (aged ≥18 years) hospitalized due to IPD in the metropolitan area of Zagreb from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2022.

Materials And Methods: Using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS) assay, we investigated various and opposing effects in hepatocellular carcinoma cells, Hep-G2 and Hep-3B with different p53-status.

Results: Cells decreased in viability after treatment with dose-dependent concentrations of resveratrol and berberine.

Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is an autoimmune chronic cholestatic liver disease characterized by progressive cholangiocyte and bile duct destruction leading to fibrosis and finally to liver cirrhosis. The presence of disease-specific serological antimitochondrial antibody (AMA) together with elevated alkaline phosphatase (ALP) as a biomarker of cholestasis is sufficient for diagnosis. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a term describing excessive accumulation of fat in hepatocytes, and is associated with metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. NAFLD prevalence is on increase and goes in parallel with the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components. That is why Croatian guidelines have been developed, which cover the screening protocol for patients with NAFLD risk factors, and the recommended diagnostic work-up and treatment of NAFLD patients.

Background And Aims: We aimed to validate newly proposed noninvasive criteria for diagnosing clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) using liver stiffness measurements (LSM) by transient elastography (TE) and platelet count.

Methods: Diagnostic performance of these new criteria for CSPH (LSM ≥ 25 kPa to rule in and Plt ≥ 150 × 10/L + LSM ≤ 15 kPa to rule out CSPH) were retrospectively tested in an independent cohort of consecutive patients who underwent hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) measurements and liver biopsy due to suspicion of compensated advanced chronic liver disease. Suspicion of cACLD was based on LSM ≥ 10 kPa by TE or results of liver imaging, without overt signs of CSPH.
