A succinimide-assimilating bacterium, Pseudomonas putida s52, was found to be a potent producer of pyruvate from fumarate. Using washed cells from P. putida s52 as catalyst, 400 mM pyruvate was produced from 500 mM fumarate in a 36-h reaction.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe effects of alpha-sialylcholesterol (alpha-SC), a synthetic ganglioside analogue, on synaptic neurotransmission were studied using in vivo microdialysis technique. Application of alpha-SC through a microdialysis probe enhanced high potassium-evoked release of acetylcholine and glutamate in the hippocampal CA3 region of Wistar rats. The experiments using synaptosomes and FM1-43, a fluorescent styryl dye used for studies of neurotransmitter release mechanisms, showed that alpha-SC increased depolarization-induced loss of dye but it did not evoke the dye loss at resting condition.

Among the four purified PLDs, the enzyme from Streptomyces halstedii K1 lost its activity at 45 degrees C. PLD from Streptomyces septatus TH-2 was stable at the same temperature.
